1968 - New York City - Manhattan - US - East Coast - North America - Big Apple - 8mm - 1960s

Immerse yourself in the urban canyons and streets of New York City and float above the roofs of the "Big Apple" with this film. It was created in 1968 as part of a trip around the world that is captured on a total of three film rolls. We found them at a flea market in Vienna. The quality of the Super 8 material is impressive. It was digitized and optimized by us - through slight stabilization and grain reduction.
You can see great impressions of the city that never sleeps. The metropolis on the US east coast has around 8.3 million inhabitants today, at that time there were almost as many with just under 7.8 million. The lively everyday life of people on the sidewalks, the traffic on the streets with the classic automobiles, trucks and buses of the time, and of course the yellow New York Taxi Cabs should not be missing: All of this makes the film special.
You don't have to do without the world-famous motifs from New York. The Statue of Liberty (filmed from a ferry), Times Square, the Chrysler Building, Central Park, Wall Street, the then ultra-modern glass palace of the UN headquarters with the flags of the world, the Brooklyn Bridge, Fifth Avenue and much more. Partly filmed from the observation deck of the Empire State Building. Incidentally, the "Twin Towers" of the World Trade Center were not in place at the time, as they were only completed and opened in 1973.

I am glad that so much of this particular video looks the same. Some other ones have shown that about half of the buildings from back in the day are gone!😊

Thank you Miguel! You're very welcome! We are happy that you like the film and remember all the scenes! That's exactly what we want to do with these films :-)! This video is only one small part of the three film rolls of this journey alone. We have so much more material to come from the US and New York in particular! Best regards from Vienna!

What's sad is that many will watch this for the nostalgia, but the original person who took this footage was so obviously fascinated by what was new. We need more new. We have to stop resisting change in NYC and all of our other cities.

Yes Ilya, I had that feeling when I did my recordings in 1972 in New York. It lasted almost 50 years before I showed something to the public 2 months ago.

Just because there are people who like to take walks along memory lane doesnt mean they're resisting change...If time machines were real, I'd rather go back to these days..Despite the high crime, the city in those days had spunk and flavor..Today's NYC is too disneyfied with millennial hippies that ruined this once great city...Everything in life changes but not all change is good change
