1979 - New York City - Manhattan - Streets - Traffic - US - 1970s - 8mm Footage

Into the beating heart of Manhattan takes us this film from 1979. Street scenes, intersections, taxis, trucks, bicycles, pedestrians - the enormous volume of traffic in the city that never sleeps. And in the middle of it all, the "Brownies", as the employees of the New York traffic control were called because of the color of their uniforms. They regulate traffic with remarkable calm and had their hands full of work to do.
The pictures were mainly taken at Herald Square, a square at the intersection of Broadway, Avenue of the Americas (6th Avenue) and 34th Street. The main store of the Macy’s department store chain, which is considered the largest department store in the world, is right on the square and can also be seen in this film. This film also provides us with some sequences from Broadway with buildings, cinemas, theaters, passers-by on the sidewalks and traffic.

So many things to see, you need to watch at least twice. Great memories. Now I'm in the mood for a Nedick's orange drink!

Those women directing traffic, the 'Brownies' were so cool. This is a great snippet of life in 1979. I wish I'd visited New York back then instead of 2016. It was good but far too commercial compared to the gritty 1970s.

The Exorcist movie came out in 1973. I think this is earlier than 1979. I lived in New York City all through the 1970s.

No there's cars visible that dates this to around 1979. Movie theaters would show re-releases of films or sometimes keep running popular movies for years.

Come on I lived in NYC off and on from 1974-2002, never saw a traffic person dressed like someone working in a school system back in 1979. Are you sure this isn't some crazy lady escaped from a mental hospital?
