On "My Car Story" we're in Iola WI on 7-6-23.
We're looking at a 1968 ½ Ford Mustang GT in Brittany Blue Paint. The car is equipped with a 428 CI Cobra Jet V8 engine, with a 4 Speed manual transmission.
The car's Owner is Gene Leopold. Gene’s had this car since 2010. Gene shares he knew how rare this car is and being a Ford Parts Man he restored the car with the help of his Son with all original parts. This car looks showroom new.

You're right Lou, this car has it all, and the 1 of 1 radio, too! I've always admired this fastback design and when Ford stuffed in a Cobra Jet, it just got better. Thanks for finding and sharing Mr. Leopold and his fountain of youth with all of us!

This car is spectacular! Perfect color, perfect engine package, and all of the available options too! That 428 CI engine sounds healthy, coupled with the 4-speed manual transmission. I always loved the Ford Mustang Fastback design from 1965-1968. They had a certain character to them. That Mustang is in pristine condition, and looks like it drove off the showroom floor! I love it Lou!

Amaaaaaazing! Love the sound of that engine! You will never get that with a $80k golf cart! Beautiful car - styling and color (agree with Lou). Amazing styling. Not too big - not too small and proportions are spot on. Those were the days when styling mattered and we could buy cars and not the blobmobiles that infest our highways today! Thanks for sharing this car with us, Lou! Great video and channel as always!

Yeah Lou, whoever ordered this car in '68 really knew what they were doing. Perfect combination of power, comfort, and colors. I love the Shelby's and California Specials of this era, but this Mustang ranks right up there. I've changed plugs on a couple of 351 Cleveland Mustangs back in the day, and it was not easy. The 428 looks even tougher. Those shock towers were a pain! Gene needs to get this Mustang to the nearest dragstrip to see what it can do! Love this video Lou!

1968 Ford Mustang GT. The Mustang would get it's first facelift in 1967, only lasting from 1967 until 1968 (1 model year). The "GT" or "Grand Tourer" package was introduced to the public in 1965. For the 1968 model year, it was the first time that it would introduce Ford's iconic Big-Block 428 Super Cobra Jet and 428 Cobra Jet, acryonomically (Known in terms of Acronyms) (A-cron-nom-i-kal-ly) known as the 428 SCJ and 428 CJ respectively. The GT trim would be available with engines such as the 390 cubic inch (6.4 Litre V8), which was the iconic model (1968 Ford Mustang GT 390 2+2) featured in the 1968 film "Bullitt" chasing a 1968 Dodge Charger R/T 440. That car chase would spawn more car chases, such as The French Connection (1971), The Seven-Ups (1973), White Lightning (1973), Gator (1976), Gone in 60 Seconds (1974), Black Samson (1974), and a lot more.

¡Saludos cordiales!

Because you are always doing your best to learn and understand cars Lou. Gasoline engines with carburetors only burn about 75 - 80 % of the fuel/air mixture in the combustion chamber - The Cylinder. That leaves 20 - 25 % of unburnt fuel exiting the cylinder through the exhaust manifold. The Air Pump pumps air into the exhaust manifold, and because the unburnt fuel is so hot when existing, air is then added to it, it burns even more and thus there is less pollution coming out of the tail pipe. If you put a Catalytic Converter after the Exhaust manifold, it will burn even more unburnt fuel because of the high temperature of the Catalytic Converter. Newer Engines produce more power & torque because more of the fuel & air is being burnt in the cylinder because of better management of the fuel and air mixture with the use of electronic Fuel Injection and better Spark Management and a few other things that I won't get into.

If I could have another '68 Mustang in my life it would be this GT 2+2 fastback! Love it. The only things I see that my coupe 289 auto from Pomona CA had this didn't was the factory a/c, full center console and hood turn signals (since it had the hood scoop for the cobra jet). This '68 was done to perfection!

An absolutely glorious car, for sure! BUT... the flapper should slam closed when the engine is started, as the vacuum to the solenoid goes from zero to 15 or whatever. When you stick your foot into the throttle, vacuum drops and the flapper opens to get more fresh air from the scoop. This solenoid is bad, understandable if that is original with a date code.

If you’re referring to the vertical chrome accent strip in the fender bulge behind the door and in front of the rear wheel, yes that is standard on 68s. On racing and on the Shelby cars that bulge housed a duct to scoop air to cool the rear brakes. On normal Mustangs, that bugle was non-functional and was accented differently each year from 65 thru 68. For instance the 67s have horizontal body color fake scoop slots. The fender bulge disappeared in 69, although some 69 models had a fake reverse scoop attached in that location.
When you see these cars I have to think of the 68 Winternationals and my hometown boy Al Joniec.BTW this car is absolutely gorgeous.

Nice CJ Mustang! Well the owner will never have to worry about changing those sparkplugs around all the air pump plumbing! I always thought Ford went too conservative on the cam timing for the 428 Cobra Jet. The cam was the 390 GT cam.

My great grandfather used to race in one of these back in the early to mid 70’s and his had a modified engine so at his class he was the fastest, but after he was done racing he lended it to his brother who was being cheap with it and used regular gas instead of premium gas that it needed and it messed up the engine. Then he came to Lansing where he and I are now, and he traded it in with a guy for a 66 cutlass. I don’t know what was going through his head, but he didn’t stay in contact with the guy he gave his race car to and now it’s lost for good.

I wish you would have asked the following follow up questions to your ""How many years have you had this car?" My addition would have been Have you owned any other GT's and what motivated you to want to find a 428? Also I am always curious as to where and who your guest found and purchased the car. Also some detail on what restoration the owner had to do upon purchasing the car.

In my opinion, the 68 was the best year of the first decade of Mustang. Why I like th 68 0ver the 67 is because I didn't like the pop off center hub on the 67 steering wheels. This is one great car. I was surprised to see in the brochure you were flipping through, there was a picture of the interior that appeared to be a bench seat with a center armrest. That had to be a printing mistake in the brochure. I never heard of a bench seat in a Mustang.
