Yep, these cars weighed nothing. My buddy's dad had one and he said when he bought it they delivered it on a trailer with no wheels and no paint,just primer. He bought it from Grand Spalding Dodge in Chicago.

The Hemi Dart was the undisputed king of every muscle ever built to roar down the 1/4 mile. Those beast could get into the high 9's with slicks and into the 10's right out of the factory. When mopar put that monster in the dart, it was a marriage made in heaven. Blew the doors off every Chevy and Ford out there. No contest!

And it's all credit to Norm Krause and his guys down in Chicago. They called headquarters in Detroit and demanded a muscle car to keep up with the Camaros and Mustangs.Well, Detroit sent them a Dart with a 318 and they couldn't believe it because it was pathetic. So Norm asked his mechanic if he could fit a 383 in it to which the guy said he would try. Well within a few days it was done and long story short they drove it up to Detroit to show headquarters. From then on they started the muscle car empire that was Mopar madness in the 60's! There is a great interview with Norm Krause telling this story on KZread. Check it out when you get time,it's worth it:)

@@joeysoG really....how so? Professional race cars in the 60s were barely touching the horsepower numbers that you can buy off the showroom floor in 2020. Not to mention the suspension, handling and braking improvements that are all needed to get that power to the ground.

@@Jeremy198123 I would think at least. This is a very rare package, though the darts don't get quite the recognition they deserve. Always overshadowed by the challengers, cudas and b-body cars.

This style of Drag Racing is gone forever. Factories really being involved this heavy in Drag racing that they build a car straight from the factory just for the track. Nothing these days that I know of.

Uh....actually it's evolved quite a bit to a place way more serious that this Dart with a 426 stuffed into it. Today and for few years now Chrysler sells track ready Dodge Challenger "Drag Pack" . Ford sells Track Ready Mustangs and Chevy has done Track focused Camaros. All three are cars with intention of to go drag racing. So serious they don't come with a VIN that would ever allow you to register them for the street. No IRS on these new cars. Straight axl with the heavy duty stuff required to stand up to an 8 sec or even 7 sec 1/4 mile. While this old school dart was packed with all of Chryler's best stuff at the time it was indeed all Chrysler from stem to stern.....today the effort is so very serious that the Challenger Drag pack cars come with rear ends made in the after market and (gasp) a Turbo 400 3 speed auto you'd more likely have expected to see only in a Camaro. Yet, this how much more serious things have become for the Factory efforts. They'll give you what-ever they can regardless of where the pieces come for or what is required to make it happen.

You don’t just start these old beasts... you wake em up.

Don't forget only a fist full of these were made and they went to special racers that Chrysler knew could make these things fly and literally destroy the competition withspecial applications of fine tuning talent and a thick wallet or a special deal with the factory !

He flooded the hell out of it, which is why it took so long to start and then over revved it on startup, but you can't beat the sound of a big block.

The engine sound would be great for an alarm clock. I put my head phones on and cranked the volume to 85 %. Now it sounds like the ones I've seen in person.

I agree with others. That is THE baddest start up I have seen on KZread. Those are the cars I grew up with. They obsessed me as a kid, they still look amazing to me today.

When that car fires up and he clears it out that Dart sounds like it's ready to kick ass!

I remember the first time I Stood Beside one when it started. One of my friends put together a 1970 original 426 Hemi Roadrunner. That was a drag car that ran in the tens. Never forget that feeling when those open headers hit. I've owned a lot of Mopars since then.

I'm sure that it would, but on a road course the Dart would be looking at four round tail lights disappearing into the distance. Horses for courses. Both cars are nice but each has it's own strengths and weaknesses. Each car is designed for different purposes. Apples and oranges.

That was freaking epic, mopar sounded so sweet!

This thing sounds amazing. Guarantee the auction employee inside the car flooded it while trying to start it, just pumping the gas pedal. At the 14 second mark you hear the auctioneer yell "what are we doing guys?" Then at 24 seconds yells "Somebody push it out please!". But the employee finally realized it was flooded, and held the gas pedal all the way down (which drains the carb bowl after it's flooded), and kept it down for a bit too long. Hopefully it wasn't over-revved for the new owner!
