    OMG, you are DA-MAN!! Been walking around for 71 yrs and as a kid could not have anything I could not fix due to no funds. I am about to embark on restoration of an E28-M5 that I have worn out and absolutely love. Looking at all the tons of tiny parts you have in the first 30 seconds have absolutely inspired me that I can do this project without cubic $$$. I self taught myself mechanics, earned $ yr years that way, then earned an MSME and served 34 yrs as an engine/performance/design/research/hybrid systems engineer. Retired now, and finished building my RV7, it is time to launch a new retirement project. You have been INSPIRATIONAL !! Seeing that prepped hood latch receiver just captured my imagination. Thank you so much!

    Not yet; I was very interested in one car, which looked great, but your advice saved me from a mistake. I asked for a Carfax report, which the dealer initially refused and then finally supplied; there was a major discrepancy in the mileage with the odometer showing quite a bit less than the mileage recorded in various entries in the Carfax report. So I passed on that one; and after that experience I am more concerned than ever about buying at a distance, so I haven't done anymore about it.

I think buying from a distance is okay with those years you are interested in but with out a car fax report it can be risky. There is a lot of cars that will come up clean. Hang in there! Im sure there is one out there with your name on it

    Thanks for another excellent video! I'm prepping all my parts for a commercial plater (going with yellow zinc) and have been accumulating bits for a couple of years (it's a disease)! What I'm not sure about is how to finish the surface for the level of "shine" I want. I prefer the more satin/matte look of cadmium, so would you say I could skip the wire-brushing step and leave them with a bead-blasted finish to achieve this? Cheers.

  • @MikesRestorations

    @MikesRestorations

    7 жыл бұрын

    Hi Banana Slugger Thats a good question.. I think the best approach would be to get with your plater and see what color chromate and how much brightener he uses in his zinc plating process. You'll be able to see exactly what you need to do based on what he shows you. Wire brushing give a nice smooth finish but will shine up if brightener is added. Sand blasting only works great but will not be as smooth as a wire brushed part. Ultimately will depend on his zinc plating formula and process Good Luck!

    Hello Alex thanks I recommend doing the plating during the hot summer months as the temperature relating to baths and drying process is all relevant. You can use heaters for the baths but you would need heaters for rinse buckets also..Thats a lot of heaters! The temperature of the metal is critical for the plating process from start to finish..even the dry and cure time its important for the metal not to be cold. I do all my work when ambient temperature is over 80 degrees and most of it done during 100 degrees I live in Las Vegas so those temperatures are easily reached most of the year. Blue chromate is not as sensitive to temperature as the yellow chromate but possible to do zinc with blue chromate around 80 degrees..less than that it will be difficult to get consistent good results Good Luck!

    Awesome work Mike!! Very inspiring and very well done 👍🏼 I just subscribed to the Channel! I’d love to see the balance of your videos to see a full comprehensive tutorial and also to get some more information on and about Caswell products and systems and the range of colorful chromates! Thanks P.S. Reuse of the Split Washers or Lockwashers is false economic reasoning to the restoration and not a recommended practice as they loose the ability to apply the necessary upward force or pressure (tension) against the fasteners head to prevent rotation or loosing of the bolt or screw. The function purpose of the locking feature is diminished with each and every time you tighten it in the stack up, to the point it will become just a flat washer w/o it’s designed safety feature. It’s like reusing a Cotter Pin or Safetywire. These are one time use only parts.

    Hello bc, Yes it's possible to make more electroplating videos,, currently there are none planned as the time it takes to make and edit them is quite extensive. Average time invested is approx 8-10 hours per 15 minute video. KZread does not provide any incentive for me to promote these things as they keep a very tight and constrained lid on our channel. Electroplating is a deep learning experience and a lot of trial and error. Keep at it my friend I wish you the best of luck!!

    Hello Peter Great! sounds like you have the hang of it I would day in a warm dry setting one week would be best.. • @MikesRestorations

    Hello Alex Thats a complicate question as I don't know the conditions and environment of your set up.. There is a lot of help via the comment sections on both 1# 2 videos that might help you out. My first thoughts are bath temperatures and environment temperature. Also circulation is always the biggest issue. I like lots of flow moving over my parts when electroplating. Also strong enough amperage for larger parts and how they are wired to move current through the parts evenly. It's all really trial and error until you spend lots of time playing with it. Ultimately you need excellent prep work prior to plating. Followed by a good hot clean pre bathing and rinse followed by the plating process with plenty of circulation and space in the bath. Correct bath and rinse templates. al lease 80degF A good wiring job with correct amps. Everything done in extremely warm condition. 100+degF wouldn't be too hot A secret also would be the brighter additive before plating to make sure everything comes out shinny and bright.

    I just started familiarizing myself with this process. One thing that I don't truly understand is the muratic acid etch if you sandblast. Is it really needed if you degrease and sandblast the parts and rinse it before going into the zinc bath? I have tried plating without the acid and I don't see a difference If I only use a wire wheel to clean the parts, then I use the acid etch.

  • @MikesRestorations

    @MikesRestorations

    Жыл бұрын

    Hello Hotratz The purpose of the muriatic acid is to remove any and all old residue of previous zinc plating. If your steel is bare metal, a good cleaning and sandblast will be sufficient for beginning the process. If you sandblast and then go to muriatic acid you might possibly drive the old zinc into the poores Sandblast for bare metal only that has never been plated, then brush for final prep. and you are ready to begin the process. For previously plated metal.Acid strip old zinc plating first, then rinse and then go to sandblast and then wire brush. Good Luck!

    Hello Patty, I have had contamination issues in the past with my plating solution. Filtering with charcol did not improve anything for the issues so I replaced the plating bath with new from Caswell. No problems since then. I do not use an anode bag when plating with zinc anodes and have not had any issues with that. I do use an anode bag when plating with nickel as the set up kit supplies them with the anodes. Hope this helps!

  • @MikesRestorations

    @MikesRestorations

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hello David Thank you There has been much discussion on this subject over the years in the comment sections of Part 1&2 It really depends on the hardness of the metal being re-plated, the condition of the metal being re-plated and the use and function of the metal part. For me personally I don't like heating up metals that have been previously forged to certain temperature and then quenched. From an atomic level molicules change and so would the strength rating. When in doubt of the part or fastener Its best to replace with new. Hydrogen embrittlement should revel itself upon torquing. If it failes it will break at the head. If its condition is not affected by the re-plating it should be fine. No guarantee on anything and there is no guarantee baking will eliminate the possible condition either. I wouldn't recommend re-plating old fasteners and studs for the engine and gearbox fasteners. They are heavily stressed over time with heat and vibration. In those cases its best to replace with new. Good Luck on your restoration work!

    Hello Freddy No issues to date.. but really depends on the condition of the hardware being refinished and hardness of the substraight. Heavy stress loads could be a factor down the road. When in doubt use new high grade strength fasteners.

    Hello Malik You have an interesting direction with the Caswell plating system... My first thoughts are to compeletey perfect and understand the electroplating process and also if you are doing it for money a liability will come with it. For personal restorations its great but for commercial use Im not so sure its a good idea. There is a phenomenon known as hydrogen embrittlement . This is common in electro plating and particularly re-plating. I would google that and see what can potentially happen. Its not possible to electroplate anything harder than a grade 10 for that reason. If your are interested in just doing decorative parts etc.. brackets, latches and light duty steel I would say Caswell does a beautiful job with the zinc and blue dichromate . Quality and strength would rival any commercial plating company. However the zinc and yellow dichromate is extremely sensitive and compared to commercial plating companies who have proprietary formulas we cannot use. Their yellow dichromate will definitely be more durable for commercial use & resale. Caswells yellow dichromate looks great and is very beautiful but will not hold up to heavy use. I wish you the best of luck and please let us know how things work out!

    Hello Roger Blue Chromate will be the same process but slightly less dipping time. Its tougher than the yellow and more acidic. The piton areas are subject to what's called shadowing and will not plate when processed. The chromate will not stick to bare metal unless zinc plated so you will not have anything to worry about. Good Luck!

This can wreak havoc espcially on grade 5 to grade 8 fastners (the higher the rockwell C, the bigger the problem)ASTM spec calls for 5-8 hour postbake immediately after plating to remove the hydrogen. www.mechanicalplating.com/hydrogen.htm If you didn't do this have you seen any problems with fastener failure after use in your applicaiton?

Any fastener over 145,000 psi.tensile strength should be baked at 375 deg. after plating for minimum of 3hr. (ASTM B850-98 requires 8 - 23 hr. bake depending on the hardness of the steel). Grade 8 fastener= 150,000 psi. tensile and Rc hardness 33-39. Hydrogen embrittlement is VERY real and VERY serious. Please don't believe me....do your own research.

    Won't these bolts be affected by dissimilar metal corrosion when you screw them in? (I know this might be stupid question, but my chemist teacher never told us anything besides actual politics and how he hates his family lol)

    Hello huszaratraktor Thats a great question! I have not been asked that before. After Zinc plating they are then coated with a dichromate conversion coating that prevents that phenomenom from occurring If we did not treat the zinc coating then yes they would become vounerable to that condition especially if you add water and salt or metal condensation
