I was at this game. Our high school football team (Pattonville Pirates) got free tickets to sit in the Flash card section of the stands where we held up orange and black colored cards to make a pumpkin jack-o-lantern face. Seeing Larry Wilson intercept three passes including a pick 6 was quite a thrill. So sorry to hear that Larry Wilson passed away today. May he rest in peace in the ultimate hall of fame.

St. Louis, back then had a defense that was ranked #1 in total defense and they were every bit as menacing as the Bears. They had some wars with their arch neumesis, the Browns, during that era. Bears were struggling badly in 1966. Injuries late in the season crippled the Cards and they gave the expansion, 3-11 Falcons their frst home win that season.

I wonder what the deal was with St Louis being sort of a "test lab" for Monday night games back then, in the days before it became a regular part of the NFL schedule. They also hosted a Monday night game in '67. Maybe the league wanted it in the central time zone so it would be easier for the entire country to watch? That sounds archaic but in the 60s who knows?

There were Friday night games played in LA in 1966, at least two of them, one against the 49ers early in the season that saw the two teams go at it in a huge on field fight. Rams won, but later in the season the 49ers beat them in San Francisco, and that would be the last 49er win in SF against the Rams until 1981 and Montana's 49ers.

Per the book America's Game, NFL wanted to see what night football would look like, in advance of what eventually would become Monday Night Football. Busch 2 was the newest stadium in the league, with state-of-the-art lighting, so it was chosen for the experiment

This game pre-empted Family Affair, The Jean Arthur Show, and I've Got a Secret on CBS that night - except in St. Louis and several nearby markets, due to blackout rules of the time. These stations probably ran a 90-minute movie up to 10 PM CT, at which point the newscasts aired.

The Cardinals had other seasons that came up a little short in the 1960s from playing in the title game, but this was likely their best team over-all during their years in St. Louis from 1960-1987, and that includes the Don Coryell years of the 1970s lacking on defense. The Cardinals were 7-1-1 with Charley Johnson as QB. Then a season ending knee injury. I still remember the name Terry Nofsinger so well who was their back-up qb and went 1-4 under him. Their only win with him was due to terrfic defense that game. Sonny Randle, Bobby Jo Conrad, Jackie Smith, Larry Wilson, Larry Stallings, Johnny Roland, just to name a few. I look back at the over-all stats on Charley Johnson and they do not stand out as much, but he got the job done.

So all I've ever known about the 1966 NFL is that the Packers beat the Cowboys in a playoff and then won the first Super Bowl. The 1966 standings show St. Louis in 4th place at 8-5-1 behind Dallas, Cleveland and Philly. After watching these "Game of the Week" films, I looked at pro-football-reference to see that the Cardinals started 5-0 and went into a week 12 game vs Dallas tied at 8-2-1, with no one else even close in the standings. Apparently Charley Johnson was lost after week 9 but there is NOTHING on the internet explaining why. I hope this Dallas game gets uploaded, it was clearly the game of the year although the Cardinals were fading with a really poor backup QB. They still had a shot at the division after losing that game, but a week 13 loss to 2-10 expansion Atlanta eliminated them. Cleveland and Philly won meaningless games down the stretch to pass St. Louis in the final standings. How did I never know this? It's typical of the lack of interest in the Cardinals during their St. Louis years. Their 1966 highlight film makes no mention of how close this team had been to the playoffs, and there was only a very brief mention of Johnson's expected return in 1967.

Johnson was injured on a non-contact play against the Giants at Yankee Stadium. It was a fluke injury. Backup QB was Terry Nofsinger and many players still talk about how the Bidwills were too cheap to spend $$ on a good backup QB. Especially considering how a similar thing happened in '65 when Johnson got hurt against the Steelers after a 4-1 start. He wasn't out for the season, but he missed time and wasn't the same. They only won one more game.

Jon Arnett's last season in pro ball. It got pretty ugly late in the year against the 49ers in San Francisco for the Bears. Rudy Bukich stunk and was replaced by Billy Wade during the game, also in his last season, and he was just as bad. The highlight of that game is here on You Tube. The 49ers and Bears had a good rivalry going in the mid-60s. SF usually won at home but had trouble at Wrigley Field. They tied that year in Chicago mid-season. The year before in Chicago Sayers scored a bunch of TDs in the mud.
