This is great! Looking forward to going through the rest of the opens. Lots of interesting stuff: * I didn't know broadcasters were able to superimpose electronic text on the screen in 1966. * Arnie was slashing the ball around the same way I would in Candler Park in Atlanta. Wow, the duck hook was strong in this one. * Got to see a bunch of guys play at a Senior Tour event in 1981; it was fun to see them on the regular tour.
Very tough loss for Arnie, but he was a gracious gentleman as always. Great champions, Casper and Palmer. May they both rest in peace.
I was in the tower sitting next to Chris and Byron working as a $20/hour “gopher” for ABC Sports. What a thrill!

That's a common misconception. Golfing friends of Arnie say it was the loss at the 1967 US Open to Jack where he did nothing but play great golf but couldn't beat him that did him in. He came to Baltusrol in 1967 topping the money list, leading in scoring and victories and placing in the top 10 of the 5 previous majors. After he lost to Jack, his desire to be the best waned and he finished outside the top 10 of the next 4 majors and never put together more than 2 victories in a year except for 1971.

Heck Jim Furyk was denied a second US Open by a very similar duck-hook to Palmer’s off the 16th tee
Why didn't the coverage show them putt for the win on the 72nd hole in regulation?

Two reasons: The ABC coverage could have ended before they finished. Remember that this is 1966 we're talking about and coverage back then isn't what it is today. The other possibility is that the USGA cut it off. For some reason they did that with the 1984 and 1988 playoffs.

@@John-tr6ofmore likely than either reason is that the recording was lost or damaged, ABC definitely showed the end of regulation live. I will have to look at 84 and 88 as I’ve seen those playoffs in full but from other uploaders, but I suspect that’s something unrelated.
