Yes, definitely fix the inner wheel house by getting the shape symmetrical to the rear. Then make new metal to fix the metal above the frame that comes out to meet the wheel house. You might need to add metal at the lower front wheel house to lay against the tabs at the end of the inner frame rail (convertible only) to close the opening that was filled with caulk. I hope this might make sense, lord knows I haven't been doing well in that department lately. Best wishes!

Sorry to see the small patch panels. My only recommendation is to remove everything not original and weld in a single piece it will be cleaner and stronger As you said you should not be able to see through areas so either overlap seams or pinch corners together. Great job and keep up the good work

I agree. I need to figure out exactly what is original and what isn't. Thanks for the suggestion.

I also follow a channel called "Fitzee's Fabrications". He was a shop owner and did restorations for a living. He owns a Mustang and has a few video on it. But it's not a convertible. He quite methodical and shows all his work, just like you do. Perhaps if you contact him he might know what those areas should look like or he might be able to direct you to a good source. His first name is Tony. Cheers n good luck!

I follow his channel too! He's a fascinating character..."Stick around!" I wish I was half as entertaining as he is.

Hello there, that is some mess you've got there !... On my ^% Fastback my drivers rear torque box was too for gone to save, and I found many very, sketchy repair jobs by previous owners when digging into it. I wound up replacing that dr/side torque box and repairing/reinforcing approx 10" to 12" of the same section of frame rail you're looking at. The front of the wheel house does look misshapen-ed/collapsed. The transition floor pan, over that area does have a return flange, that is attached to inner wheel house lip where you're gap is... I agree with "68 Restoration" below, replacing those scraps, with one piece of metal would be a better repair. If you have interest, I can send pics and video of my repair for comparison.... Keep fighting brother....

Yup. It's a bit of a quilt. We have a lot of work to do to make it (more) right and stock looking without so much filler.

I was shocked to see things like this when I started my project but I have unfortunately become numb to it at this point. The pan that butts up to the wheelhouse should have about a 1/2 lip on it that backs up to the bottom of the wheelhouse that would be plug welded together. I would get rid of the patchwork you have going on and make up single panels if possible. Most of it looks like the back of the floor pan under the seat and up the wheelhouse area. That passenger side wheelhouse definitely looks like it is caved in most likely done by the quilt maker lol. It looks like someone cut the bottom of the wheelhouse off for some reason. I am working on a 66 coupe that is on a tip over jig and can email you some photos later if you would like. Keep chipping away at it.

It makes sense to me to replace it all with a one piece solid filler panel. And it makes sense that it should have a 1/2 lip on it to attach to the wheel well. Can you email me a few pictures of that lip? Thanks for the help.

Here is youtube link for a the actual area you are working on: -- goto 1:59 (til about 2:12) - it looks that area is just floorpan. So all those little patches were likely tacked in without taking any interior out etc. The video is part 5 of a series where the rear frame and floor are replaced as one giant piece from a donor. It's actually a mopar guy that did this, but again he is very methodical and shows everything (I think he runs a gopro on his forehead lots of times). Channel name: Justmoparjoe Series (in his playlists) "Mr B's Mustang..." Episode 5. kzread.info/dash/bejne/k5Wl05mEZty8Y9I.html

Thanks. That's helpful to see. I'm interested in why he welds one pass, grinds it down, and then puts a second weld layer on it. That's curious to me. It seems like one solid weld would be just a strong... Thanks for sharing.
