I had a black GT350 with gold stripes. Mine had a roll bar, surprised you did not mention that when showing the interior. Also the stripes on my had a more distinct edge. Kick myself for selling for a low price back in 1970.

thanks so much for this video and info on your Shelby. i'm an old guy now and saw my first Shelby in the summer of '66 on Ft. Gordon Ga. military post but it had different wheels. it was only later that i found out thru photos that it was a '66. i was aware of these Shelby Mustangs in "65/66 due to reading sports car mags when i was in high school but never saw one until Ft. Gordon and i have never seen another in motion on a public street. i was always a Chevy guy in my youth but the early '65/'66 Shelbys were my dream car to own especially due to lighter weight of these cars and the 306 horse power engine. you are very fortunate to have one and i'm jealous. Ha.

Gorgeous car! Never seen those decals before on the fender, but if I had to guess, I would say past owner decided to paste on horn decals on the fenders. The original pilot car in 65 had a GT350 emblem on the fenders that looked similar to the tail panel emblem and they were located on the fenders in the same spot as the mustang 289 v flag. But again that was the pilot promotional car.

Great car. Thanks for the video. I own 1117. The cobra emblems were not on the fenders when it left LAX to answer your question. If you like them keep them on. The blue dots were not original to 66 s only 65 but those tires are worth a fortune as is that fuel pump (guessing 1500 for the pump probably more now). Good for you for hanging onto the car for so long. Once again great car

John Shelby thanks for the comments. I may take those emblems off as I like things to be stock. I don’t know how the blue dots then got on the car if they weren’t original. But appreciate your insights.

I drove 1 for a year, built the 427 Cobras, so got to drive 1, street raced it, never got beat, wound it 7500 RPM, plugs only lasted 2000 miles, also got 4th in a gymcan with only race cars. Was a lot of fun!

If anything there was a Cobra snake emblem there but I can imagine they are a hot item to lift. Those cars were rare in 66. They turned eyes at red lights. The exhaust sound was exhilarating.

My guess is they cover holes that were meant for the badges on the gt.?.

My grandpa used to own this car. He lived in Salem, VA. I have kind of looked for this car for a long time and one of his old friends turned me on to this video today. He has passed away now, but I would love to talk to you some time and tell you the history we know of the car. It had about 20k miles when he sold it, Edgar Nolen.

Interesting video nice to see an original Shelby instead of a clone . Didn’t realise how standard they are inside , I have a 66 Fastback here in the UK and it’s exactly the same apart from the rev counter . No air con , no power steering but better access around the engine without extra pulleys, pipes and belts . Don’t know why Shelby replaced rear quarter vents for glass ? I can only assume it was so he could glance over his shoulder to see cars trying to overtake in a race , I don’t think it would be a weight saving modification. No one seems to know ! Chris

I almost purchased a 1966 2+2(?) Mustang Fastback. Had the money, but zero proper storage. Early 90's price was 7-8k at a Ford speed shop.

When you bought the over the counter 3 two barrel carb setup OR when you bought an over the counter "cobra dress up kit" for an engine you got those 2 emblems with it. When the dealer installed those kits they usually put those emblems on higher up on the fender ( just above where the 289 emblem would go on a regular mustang). I wonder if that car had a 3 2's set up on it in the past. Where did you get the fuel pump rebuilt?

One of the commenters said this used to be his grandfather’s car. He didn’t mention any mods other than the hurst linkage. I got the fuel pump rebuilt a long time ago probably 18-20 years. I’ve owned the car since about 1998. Thanks for the insight on the emblems.

old headlights can be found in similar Yr trucks, many work trucks at airports etc arent driven at night, so headlights arent used.

Are the wheels repro? Not being a "holdover" it should have 14 inch wheels?

My friend's dad had one with a elongated air cleaner. Yours looks a little less mean than his. I will know by the sound of the exhaust if yours is the same. He drove to work past my bedroom window every morning going to work. On weekends it was Riverside Raceway for the slaloms. Yours is way tame. His had a huge tach molded right into the dash. His was louder and had tons of torque. It would jump out into the intersection when the clutch was released. I would get thrown back into the seat. I loved to ride in that pocket rocket.

Very nice card. I used to own #2330 which also had a Hurst. Last car I owned with a manual choke. I had totally forgotten about that bag for the windshield wiper fluid. Amazing that you've replaced so few parts. We replaced all of those and more on 2330 back in the 1980s.

Are the side door panel air vents functional?

Having owned a '66 I spotted 1under hood difference. Mine had a road draft tube , no PCV valve and an "exemption" letter in glove box from CARB. I believe mine was ser # 419, not sure about that. Many years ago.

I HAD AN ALL ORIGINAL 65 FASTBACK C CODE THAT WAS STOLEN FROM ME IN 2004. MINE ALSO HAD THE ORIGINAL ROAD DRAFT TUBE ON IT AS WELL. I SURE MISS THAT CAR.

Out ran one of these back in 71 in Calli in a 70 426 Cuda. Was a white speck in the rearview.

I would hope a big block could run away from this car. This was meant for road racing not quarter mile runs. On a track it would run away from a Cuda.

@@jacobsteele7138 this Shelby if in fact has the 306 h.p. engine and in a good state of tune just might win against the 426 hemi Cuda' in a qtr. mile. remember the Mustang is much lighter in weight than the Cuda', and if the hemi Cuda' is stock and both have similar rear end ratios, just saying, be a good race i believe.

@@williammorgan8786 Your totally wrong. In STOCK setup the Shelby would destroy it on track but lose in a straight race. They were both built for a different purpose.

This car has disc brakes in the front. They we standard on gt350s.

You say it has a stock Hi-Po 289. Ford built this engine to put out 271hp. I believe Shelby American tweaked it to 306 hp for the GT 350.

Yes, you are correct these cars were 306 hp.

You got a nice car that the original owner put a few things on he thought was cool. Like the alarm and the Hurst and the emblems.

I thought the battery was in the trunk on those Shelby

This video shows exactly the car that my friend's dad had. I guess he had a 65. You are right, the 65 is a handful. Your 66 is all tame compared to his. He had a 307 hp 289 with a Vienna wafer shaped air cleaner with a cobra snake emblem on it. This is the exact car. Notice the in dash tach. It is absolutely a totally awesome car. The manual choke cable was used on all 289 High Performance equipped (K code) Mustangs. Of course, this also included all of the Shelby GT350 Mustangs.

@@paulreed2138 According to page 13 of the 2019 1966 Shelby Registry and I quote, "Initially, all cars were equipped with the Holley 715 cfm carburetor with a hand-operated choke. Starting with chassis number 801, all GT-350s with an automatic transmission were equipped with the Autolite 4100, 600 cfm carburetor, also with hand-operated choke."

Why do you say that? I know these cars pretty well and I would say it's quite unlikely to be a fake from the details I saw. I would certainly need to look at the rearend and the rest of the car to confirm for sure but from what was shown it was all there. Evenly spaced bolts on the export brace and all. Someone added the alarm, changed out the shifter and put the over the counter tri power badges on it at some point. I kinda thought those Cragar made wheels were optional on 65 Shelby's only, but being such an early 66 car maybe they are correct?
