The Ford Galaxie is a full-sized car that was built in the United States by Ford for model years 1959 through to 1974. The name was used for the top models in Ford's full-size range from 1958 until 1961, in a marketing attempt to appeal to the excitement surrounding the Space Race. In 1958, a concept car was introduced called "la Galaxie" which incorporated the headlights into pods inline with the grille and a reduced front profile.[2]
For 1962, all full-size Fords wore the Galaxie badge, with "500" and "500/XL" denoting the higher series. The Galaxie 500/LTD was introduced for 1965 followed by the Galaxie 500 7-Litre for 1966. The Galaxie 500 prefix was dropped from the LTD in 1966, and from the XL in 1967;[3] however the basic series structuring levels were maintained. The "regular" Galaxie 500 continued below the LTD as Ford's mid-level full-size model from 1965 until its demise at the end of the 1974 model year.[4]: 401-42
The Galaxie was the competitor to the high-volume full sized Chevrolet Impala.[5] and the Plymouth Belvedere.
The 1966 model had a slight "Coke Bottle" design and new horizontally split grille among other small changes.
A new model was introduced for 1966; the Galaxie 500 7 Litre, fitted with a new engine, the 345 hp 428 cu in (7.0 L) Thunderbird V8. This engine was also available on the Ford Thunderbird and the Mercury S-55. The police versions received a 360 hp version of the 428 known as the 'Police Interceptor' as police cars. Safety regulations for 1966 required seat belts front and rear on all new cars sold domestically. The Galaxie 500 would be the number three-selling convertible in the U.S. in 1966, with 27,454 sold; it was beaten by the Mustang (at 72,119, by nearly 2.5:1) and by the Impala at 38,000.[28] A parking brake light on the dashboard and an AM/FM radio was optional.[29] The 1966 LTD dropped the Galaxie name.[4]: 423
The 1966 body style was introduced in Brazil (Ford do Brasil) as a 1967 model; it used the same platform and body throughout its lifetime until Brazilian production ended in 1983. A vehicle of this model was used by Queen Elizabeth during her visit to Chile in 1968, and has since been preserved by the Chilean government as a ceremonial state car.

Got this for Christmas Dad bought a 390 version when I was 8. My favorite childhood car. Going to build it stock. Might get another one to customize. Keep giving us a hard time. Some of us are entertained by the rivet counters I'd probably use the chrome intake too. With matte clear. That'll show em. Lol. Thanks Chris. Always entertaining

"You bet your sweet bippy" was a saying popularized by the TV show Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In, which ran from 1967-73. It's basically the equivalent of saying "You bet your ass!"

Mid 1960's the most popular show on TV (no internet or cable TV yet), anyway the show was titled "Rowan and Martins' Laugh-In". Everybody, north, south, east or west, red state or blue, male, female and everything in between, even the household pets would never miss an episode. And the "swearing phrase" on the show was "You bet your sweet Bippy". All around America people were saying it - "Do you sell cola here?" - "You bet your sweet Bippy we do." So I bet MY sweet Bippy this build is COOL. BTW, I'm 76

lol, I can't talk about doing the factory color for the engines. When I made the MPC '69 Charger kit, I just made my engine all one color (Silver). :D But I thought it looked more realistic. lol Like you say, build for you and make it how you like it. Thank you for showing the padding idea for the white letter for the tires. Never thought of that. Might do my Petty wheels over and use that method.

I built this kit twice. It was one of the first car kits I built when I was 10 or 11. Then I built it again a few years later using the custom front end. They have added parts to this kit. It used to be a 2 in one kit. I don't remember any decals. The rear axle is different. It was leaf springs. There was no roll cage. Amt uses this engine in at least one other kit, (33 Willys coupe)

What an awesome technique for chrome headers! I am looking forward to giving that a shot. May be 🤔 able to cut the Bet and Bippy decals into individual letters to arrange them for the right side but who knows how that will turn out, I'll try it on one of mine. By getting several kits I'll have extra decals if I mess up.

I completed the earlier release of this kit (I bought it in 2022) a couple of months ago and I see they've upgraded some of the decals in it, for example mine didn't have the badges or instrument panel decals in it, but it had a lot more "racing car" decals in it which I'm sure will come in handy on other projects eventually. Very simple kit but I love the number of build options it has.

Hi there - you seem to know your onions so hope you can help - how much external difference is there between this 66 (as a stock build) and a 67? I want to build the car from the tv series 'The Invaders" which I've been led to believe is a 67 (soft top) coupe but a kit of this is no longer available. Aside from the soft / hard top issue, is the body and trim similar?

Ford offered the 7-litre as a package to the Galaxie 500 (or the XL?) in 1967, but it wasn't a separate model, just an option.

Another fun build up, *Chris* . I, too, like the colour you chose for the body -- quite unique . I see parts for the stock 390/427/428 FE (cylinder heads and rocker covers ; pulleys and belt, too) as well. This is one of AMT's finest efforts. Atypical for its time, the exhaust isn't moulded - on the chassis pan (and the attached - to - the - axle pipes are, as you've exhibited, easily snipped from their home). Interior tub is barren except for the door cards -- the separate - and optional - seating is again atypical for the era. Which one of these kits has the opening trunk ? I've forgotten already (haha). Perhaps the *Jolly* *Green* *Gasser* version ?

You talked about the roll cage being an after thought or something. The roll cage has been with the kit since first issue. I have several issues of this kit, and all issues have pretty much been the same except for the decals. Some of the kit has had some updating, but pretty much same as the original issue of this kit.
