1966 Datsun Roadster with Miata Engine Moves Under Own Power

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This is the first time my engine swapped Roadster has moved forward (and back) under its own power in more than a year. You can find a detailed record of my build here: www.orange-claw-hammer.com/car...

that is fantastic! the KA is supposed to make 140hp, so it should be very fun. watching your video is only making me want to finish sooner! very nice car, btw!

Ah, the KA: a fine swap for a roadster. In theory this engine produces 128HP. I think my worn 40-year-old stock engine was down to about half that. It's enough power in a light car to chirp the tires in the first three gears!

I'm sticking a KA24E into my 69. should be fun! i like that you kept it a 1.6. i just want to stay with the family, lol. what kind of horsepower does that Mazda power plant produce?

Hey ya, I just bought a Datsun Roadster with a 1990 Miata engine and 5 speed. Question, how did you hook up your speedometer and tachometer?

I never did, but I researched how to. With the speedometer, you have two options -- one somewhat inexpensive and hard, the other easy but somewhat expensive: (1) get an early RX-7 mechanical sender (my recollection is that you want the one with the purple plastic gear -- the colors denote tooth count) and drive gear (need to take rear housing off to get drive gear). Notch the Roadster X-member to create clearance for sender cable. Probably have custom extra long drive cable fabricated. (2) Buy a GPS speedometer sender ($90-250). Buy a digital signal to mechanical drive speedometer box ($284-345). Plug them in and run drive cable to gauge. For the tachometer, I would have a gauge shop convert it to take the tach output signal from the Miata ECU. The reason I don't recommend this approach for the speedometer is that it's unlikely to produce a good solution to the odometer and trip meter.
