I picked up a 283 for free about a month ago. Tore it down ran the numbers and it turned out to be a 66 327. I got that bad boy for free, it has been apparently bored 40 over. I don’t know shit about fuck with motors but as a 26 year old I got time to learn. I’m planning on droppin it in my 59 el Camino project. Going to take my time and do it right, it’s really a solid motor very well taken care of.

You scored in that unit, 327s make alot of power pretty easy. They like to rev. 66 come with a strong forged crankshaft, they are hard to break. Back in the late 60s thru the 70s, people were turning them 9000+RPM in certain racing applications. Aluminum rods were the way to go with that kinda shit. Tunnelram intakes worked real good on them too. I'm looking for a certain mid 70s Holley tunnelram for my 327. Hard piece to find tho.

As a kid in small town west Texas in the late 70’s an old man had a factory L79 327 1966 Nova SS. He refused to sell it because he didn’t want some kid cutting out the fender wells for big ass tires. I begged him and said I would never cut the body up....prick wouldn’t sell it....let it set and rot....worth a ton of money today in good condition!

They are rare as hell now. I bought a totalled 66 Chevy 2 with a L-79 in it, M21 Muncie, 4-11 geared 12-bolt posi. Car was wrecked in the late 60s, I bought it in the late 80s for $150 bucks. Body was fucked, but the drivetrain was in damn good shape. I bought it for scrap price. Built the engine to make over 540hp, used the 4spd in a 67 Firebird I already had and also the 12-bolt went into it too. Sold the shell for $150 bucks for parts. So I got the entire drivetrain free.

The 327 went into a 69 C-10 drag truck I had, ran 7.00s in the 8th at almost 100mph. I swapped out at least 7 engines in that truck. 406 I had in it got it down in the 6.60s. Ended up trading that truck for a 69 Elcamino 396 350hp SS with a 67 427 bigblock & M-22 rockcrusher swapped in it. 4-56 geared 12-bolt in it. Car was mean. It got stolen out of my back yard years ago.

That 327 brought me back to being 8 years old in 79' when my dad put an L-T1 longblock in his 78' Vette. He had that same air cleaner/valve cover combo. I remember he put Blackjack headers on it, I don't think that brand exists anymore. Thanks for the memories. I still have the air cleaner plates, the valve covers went with the car eventually but I still have the L-82 valve covers. The stats on this build are crazy. 8 grand!! I don't think I would have the balls to spin my smallblock to 8 grand even it could. lol Were the small journal 327s a bigger, smaller or the same diameter as a 302DZ?

DZ cranks are large journal. People used to turn them down to 2 inch and use the small journal rod size. I built a 302 that turned 9800rpm thru the lights. Had BME aluminium rods in it and Super lightweight Arias pistons. Had a 288/288@.050 680/680 lift solid roller. Ported Phase 2 Bowtie heads. It ran pretty good. Had a 7000 stall and 6-17 gear in it. I've got a 66 327 with power pack heads, and I wanted to see what cam you would use with a power glide for a short bed street pickup, should I spend the money to upgrade the heads or just get some modern ones, I would enjoy spending some money for your help. I'm in Montgomery, thanks again for your badass videos!

Stock vortec heads with just a spring upgrade and pin the rocker studs(I say this assuming your on a tight budget)work great on a street 327. If you can find vortecs off a 305, the chamber is smaller and will help your 327 with compression(especially if it has flat top pistons). Also 327 don't make much low rpm torque. Your truck isn't super lite-weight. A turbo 350 or 400 with a 2800ish stall converter(plenty streetable)would help acceleration tremendously.

Swapping out that powerglide with a 350 T would make a big difference. Unfortunately with the price of shit these days, the money spent on making them old heads up to snuff for high performance use, be similar money to just buy a new pair of aftermarket heads. Just seen a new pair of Promaxx Vortec heads on eBay for $800 bucks shipped. They would make a hell of a difference over your old heads. Last pair of 60s heads I had completely updated costed over $1200 bucks at the machine shop. You can buy a new pair of Brodix IK 200 heads for about the same money. And the power difference would be 100+hp compared to a pair of powerpack heads. Better in every way.

I'd use a pretty big hydraulic roller, I drive a 84 C-10 daily with a Comp XE294HR cam. Totally dependable. I have a 4spd manual tho, allows a bigger cam on the street than a automatic with alot of stall. With a auto trans, it would need about a 3500 stall converter. I use a 4-10 gear in it too. Sucks on the highway, but it gets up to speed quick. MPG ain't as bad as one might think either.
