1963 Studebaker Avanti "Bonneville Record Breaker"

(Alert, BETTER QUALITY COLOR) This is a Studebaker Avanti Promotional film from 1963. The Studebaker Avanti set all kinds of land speed records for a factory stock off the show room floor vehicles. These records remained on the books for many years. Top speed was almost 169 miles per hour. Not bad for something you could buy at your local Studebaker Dealer for 5 grand.

@chewybunz Ah yes, Avanti's could, documented by numerous sources. The record stood for many years for a showroom american car. Avanti's were freaking fast on a top speed...it took a while to get there, not fast in the quarter mile though. This is legit. I own a 63 myself.

they did keep the company afloat, It didn't go out of busines, it simply stopped making cars. Studebaker owned Mercedes Benz of North America, STP, Paxton Super Charger, Olan Engine, Wheel Horse Tractors and then merged with Worthington, to form Studebaker Worthington. Studebaker Worthington Leasing is still in business today. They only stopped making cars. They didn't go bankrupt, they didn't go belly up. They didn't fail. Just ended one business segment.

I think you are thinking of Gravely tractors and lawn equipment and not Wheel Horse.

@chewybunz They are American NEW Car Records, not Italian or German off the showroom floor. Italian exotics are as fast but these were EVERY man cars, not exotics. these records are on the books. All recognized by the auto industry. Larks could do 145 miles per hour. The Hawk could do 135. they have Paxton Super Chargers like Drag Racers. Studebaker sold them that way No other USA car company put superchargers on their engines at the time. They are light, fiberglass bodies too.

Corvair and Oldsmobile both offered supercharged cars in 1963. I had a 1963 Olds Jetfire with a turbo charger.

Just finished reading a chaptor on this in Granatellis's Mr 500 book of 1968. Do you know it? ANyways, with that PAxton hooked-up, they really flew; but without, jus OK performance. They were making hey with a whole bunch of studebakers out there. Really super reading on Granatelli's life.

No, I didn't know that. Too bad they don't have the video of that. Studebakers weren't really drag cars, but they were very well built cars at the time. My dad had a 62 R1 GT Hawk with the 289 and 4 speed box and Twin Traction. The coolest part was it was still essentially the 53 Loewy Coupe. Studebaker was good at updating a car to make it look modern.

Hard to believe this was built on a Lark chassis.

Well, you have to remember, the Lark has a very solid beginning, the chassis was designed in 1953 by Studebaker for it's full car line. The Lark was just one variation on that line of cars. The Lark was using it at the time in 1961when the work on the Avanti began.

Avantis are very straight line stable especially if the original nose down rake is maintained. They are stable at well above 200 MPH with no body panel changes.

The fastest car Ive ever owned was a 1970 Chevy Nova. It could hit 192 mph. That was right before I blew the engine. Lol.
