1962 Tonka Airport Set Restoration Part 2 - Tonka Serv-I-Car Restoration
Ойын-сауық
This is Tonka Airport Set Restoration Part 2! Tonka had some interesting toys in the early 1960's. Some of the coolest were the Tonka Airport Service Set. Oddly enough, they never made any airplanes! But this must have been a cool Tonka Toy to play with anyhow! Check out this restoration and make sure you are subscribed for part 1 and part 3!!!

You should take a chrome marker and color in the wing type thing on the front to add a little detail. I don't think I've ever seen this Tonka toy. Very cool, I like that you can steer it and it dumps. Would have loved this as a kid.

Great restoration. I have never seen something like this IRL (though I was not traveling by air in the 1960s). A local pizza place in the 1980s used something similar for their deliveries -- it was adequate for quiet residential streets.

Good question! It's not one of their more common sets, and it's even more uncommon to see a complete set. Bidding will start at $10,000!! Going once... Going twice.....
Nice of you to take vievers comments into account. I mean preassemble - then paint in order to avoid cracks. :)

I was going to ask about that and please forgive my ignorance here. He's using powder coating, which is much stronger that just painting. All the pieces are totally dry when they come out of the oven so you don't have to worry about the coated parts sticking together. If you have the parts assembled and then paint or coat them doesn't that increase the likelihood of getting cracks between the parts? And with just primer on those areas wouldn't they be more prone to rust? 🤔
@aleksandersaski5387

@@c.j.cleveland7475 I was referring to this kind of cracks: kzread.info/dash/bejne/aqN8sqx-j7jHdNY.html minute 23:24. Only that I just noticed it's a different channel... ;) but the issue stands nevertheless! :)

Another great resto Tim, can't wait for Part 3. Question: Do you always use epoxy primer on your projects and if not, what are the advantages to using an epoxy primer?💖👍✌
@TRGRESTORATIONS

Sandblaster sounded like old tv static
@TRGRESTORATIONS
2 жыл бұрын
Pretty much. The sound of the vacuum on my new cabinet sounds like a dental drill when I speed up the footage, so I had ton mute that part, then people complained about the silence, so I had to go back and add some white noise
You do such beautiful work. Do you keep the toys for your own collection, or do you generally sell them off? Is there value added to restoring them, or (like some other antiques or collectables) do purchasers prefer them to have "patina"?
👍🏻👍🏻

Awesome set so far Tim. Honest question; Do you think the bare metal, by pre-assembling parts, would react together and cause some rust to start?
@TRGRESTORATIONS
2 жыл бұрын
I've always heard that, but I'm not sure. Most of these toys will never see the elements outside again, so if probably doesn't matter. But when you're powder coating, too many nooks and crannies can cause Faraday Cage issues and it will be hard to evenly coat the piece.

I never knew that body filler would stand 400 F the front wings around the headlight would look nice in silver or gold going with the airline theme .
@TRGRESTORATIONS
2 жыл бұрын
The small little sections on a toy will take that kind of heat, but a large thick section like you would see on a car would probably have a lot of cracking issues.
