The 09 was the best of them all..l loved em when l was a young one .the 62 409 took em all on and kicked ass .my first one l put in a 58 Impala l had cooked the 348 in and it rocked . But the fastest one l had was the 62 Impala and it turned 13 flats all day with the 409 with duel fours .man l loved that car.

I always loved the 409 as a good racing mill. The 409 was originally a heavy truck engine, and became a favorite among racers and hot rodders because of it’s short stroke and quick rev. The Beach Boys had it right; “She’s real fine, my 409”

What an incredible design. That thing looks beautiful AND mean AND sleek AND aggressive all at the same time. It also looks like it's going 150 MPH while sitting still. I'm a lifelong "Chevelle guy" and have never really paid all that much attention to the pre-1964 GM muscle cars. I mean I know what they all are and what they all look like and I'm familiar with their engines, but I guess I've just never really looked at a bubble top Bel Air long enough to truly appreciate the design. Actually I feel like I need to leave this vid ASAP because now I'm Googling 1962 Bel Air bubble tops and wondering if maybe I should sell a Chevelle or two and replace it/them with one of these things. I ESPECIALLY love the "day two" look of this car. Maybe I wouldn't go with quite so many stickers, but I LOVE the vintage drag racer look...and those fat rear tires look so sinister. Must...RESIST!

Very kind words, Johnny... and you're right, Chevelle guys and early 60's Chevy guys.... ARE two different enthusiasts ! I've owned this car since 1993. Canadian car ( was a 6 cyl / glide ), out of a prairie field, still has all original paint. However, this is not an old school build. Modern, current NHRA Stock Eliminator.

Brought back memories! We had a 62 Chevy too. Except it was a 4 door Impala hardtop, painted cream over biegh with little hub caps and ribbon whites, powered by a small block 283 and automatic transmission. Otherwise,it was exactly like this car!

Aunt ordered one of these, drove it for the next 44 years. Had less than 50K miles on it when she died. 1 time she got tired of my cuz and I harping about wanting to drive it so she told us we had an hour to have fun with it. They lived 1/4 mile off the hiway, 1/2 mile from where everyone raced on our 1/4 mile strip. At 17 and 16 we drove the piss out of that thing, and she sat outside hearing it all. Never been a chevy fan but I was thoroughly impressed with that 409 4-speed.

This engine was so B A in it’s day, that The Beach Boys even wrote a song about it. The 348 and the 409 were on the same block, but that is where the similarities ended. Both engines had a short stroke crank, as they were originally designed for large trucks, and needed a quick reving high torque engine. The 409 produced in spades. The first of Chevy’s performance big blocks. I have great memories about these engines.

I grew up with those motors. I worked as a grease monkey at a local shop when I was 13-15, one of the mechanics there had a 65 Malibu (I think) with a 409/twin 4's, it was the fastest car around there. One guy had a 426 hemi that kept tearing his car up racing the 409, blowing diffy's, drive shafts, pulling shackles loose etc. It was hilarious, everybody said the hemi would be faster but he just wasn't a good enough wrench to get the power to the ground without breaking something LoL. That job rates as one of the most fun jobs I've ever had.
