It was definitely a lot cleaner, and we were definitely above other Asian countries back then, but around 50% of the population lived in poverty compared to 18-20% today. There was a saying, “the Philippines is either a rich country pretending to be poor, or a poor country pretending to be rich” back then, because while Manila was developed, outside of Manila was a different story.
