1960 Rolls Royce Phantom V Limousine w/ Body By James Young Start Up, Exhaust, and In Depth Tour

In this video I give a full in depth tour of the very rare and quite unique 1960 Rolls Royce Phantom Limousine James Young Series. I take viewers on a close look through the interior and exterior of this car while showing details, over viewing of features, and noting unique styling cues to the vehicle itself. I also show the engine and the details of it, start it up and see how it sounds under acceleration. A thorough tour/review of this car designed to give others a greater overall appreciation of the vehicle.

I actually drove a similar one...James Young LWB S1. It gave me new respect for the chauffeurs who had to pilot them in city traffic. It was a real handful and no power steering. Being relatively narrow, it wallowed in even gentle turns. Mechanically, they were antiques the day were made. Even the transmission, which was one of the more up-to-date things about them, was an old GM version.

To me, this body style epitomizes what RR is all about. Classic flowing lines which definately turns heads wherever this baby goes. In years past I used to see these floating around Beverly Hills and in the S. CA area. They were so well put together- and of such high grade materials, this is a lifetime car. In years past(don't know if it's still true) the hoods of these cars were sealed for the first 100,000 miles, where only a certified RR mechanic could touch the engine until that milestone.

Tacoma 55 He is serious, judging by the the look of his KZread, he's a Brit like me. Whilst auto transmissions, power steering, windows etc were all common place in the US by the 60's, our cars were a lot more basic! Even mid-luxury cars like Jaguars etc all has wind up windows until the early 70's, and right up until the mid 60's, heaters and a radio were actually dealer fitted cost options on most everyday cars. (My 1973 Mini didn't come with a radio from factory, and my Friends 1986 Ford Escort Popular had no cassette, player, cigarette lighter or a rear washer and wiper). My uncle worked for a local Triumph dealer, and had to fit heaters, radios and overdrives all the time. Power steering was a novelty, and most of the used cars my dad had when I was growing up in the 90's didn't have it. In fact, my neighbours 2001 Peugeot 106 doesn't have it, and that has hand crank windows and no central locking too! Same goes for auto's, only things I saw them on as a kid was BMW's and Jag's, they were considered slow, heavy and thirsty on fuel in smaller cars, and you only saw them on small cars if a person had a disability and couldn't use a clutch. My dad flat out refused to drive auto's until they became better over here in the 2000's he hated them that much. Even air con was a novelty until recently!

Actually in luxury car brands even as low as Cadillac, Lincoln, Chrysler (low in comparison to RR) even in some Chevy's and Ford's and cars of that stature, power windows were quite common even in the 60's. And automatic transmissions were extremely common in the 60's.

I think this car is called a limousine because it has enormous rear seat room, perfect for being chauffeur driven. Most people think of the stretch limousines like the Lincoln Town Car for example. On the other hand, this vintage Rolls-Royce Phantom limousine is really equivalent to the current generation Rolls-Royce Phanjtom EWB (extended wheelbase), at least in size.

Hey mate! you don't rev a badly out of tune, 55 year old engine. She's badly in need of a major service, no oil from gauge, possibly a hole or a bad join near the exhaust and lodging by the ammeter, the generator is on the way out as well. A lovely old lady indeed, but much in need of some love and attention.

Very nice and high quality machinery. 44 year master mechanic here. My experienced ears were right again when I made the assumption the lifters were rattling badly in that engine and clicked pause 3 times before I could see the oil pressure gauge that was reflecting light and it showed NO OIL pressure at all. That engine either has no oil or the oil pump has failed and it also has a miss. BUT...this only needs to be fixed because the car is worth it! The 380 and 415 rolls Royce V8s are lifetime engines and it is the previous owner or other neglect that is not the fault of the car quality. In other words a PERSON caused the at hand problem

Along with the engine sounding not quite up to par, to address these things and the privacy glass I'd bet this Rolls will need over well over $10,000 in repairs right off the bat. Nice car indeed but not to mention these things while talking it up would make me leary about what else is needed after all it is a 1960.

I let my old car run for a few minutes every morning before going to town. In the winter, I let it run on choke to help it warm up quicker, and rev the engine lightly once the idle stabilizes to disable the choke (electronic choke).

The crass-ness of this presentation made my toes curl. Given the chance I'm sure Rolls Royce would not want you anywhere near their cars. You haven't a clue what things are called, what they're made of and why they are as they are. You'd be more suited to presenting Ladas.

+Nicole K Could not agree more. I could never imagine purchasing a a clapped-out Hyundai from this clueless knucklehead, much less a vintage Roller. The fact that he uses a shit camcorder with lots of wind noise tells me he's a hack salesman.

+Leon Davis Saabkyle isn't a salesman. He gives tours of all sorts of vehicles, new and classic, as provided for use to him by numerous dealerships. His videography is perhaps not the best, but it's not like he can take the car from the dealership for a few days to give finer shots, so he makes do with a camcorder. I hesitate to call him an amateur at what he does, but a cinematographer he is not, just a car guy that wants to share everything neat he sees. Now I don't think he perhaps know the ins and outs of this Rolls Royce (or as I like to call pre Silver Shadow RR's, this very nice 1939 Packard) but evidently neither does the dealership - mind you, a dedicated RR dealer - given that they are offering it at such a high price meanwhile it has no oil pressure, some faulty electronics, and what sounds like a misfire in one on the cylinders.

  • @LeonAllanDavis

Daniel McLean "...he gives tours of all sorts of vehicles..." To what purpose does he give "tours"? We agree he doesn't know "the ins and outs" of the Roller so the question remains: "why"? That being said, if you equate a Packard with a classic Rolls Royce, then it's easy to see why you would defend a clueless doof like this fellow. That part I get,

+Leon Davis If you have looked at the man's channel for even a moment, you'll have seen he has over 1000 videos similar to this one, depicting new, used, and classic cars. These cars come from countless different brands and dealerships. Now I don't doubt that the dealership allow Kyle reign of a piece of their inventory for an hour in the hopes it could spurr a sale. But that's not why he does it. Perhaps he does it because he enjoys seeing cars he might not otherwise ever see or be able to afford, and this is a means of sharing that joy. Perhaps he likes the relatively small ad revenue he presumably gets from having so many videos and nearly 1 million subscribers. But he is not the one making money when this car is sold. As for the comparison to a prewar Packard, that is me paraphrasing a favorite magazine review of mine from wherein several luxury sedans were compared, and in the magazine's opinion as well as in numerical methods of performance analysis, a late Silver Cloud was ranked behind not just a Grosser Mercedes, but a Cadillac Deville and a Lincoln Continental, roughly tying with an Imperial and beating a Jaguar. Now I don't expect you, with your supercilious and holier-than-thou attitude stereotypical to RR fans to accept such a ruling, but I do so love to bring up with your sort the zingers they included in the RR subsection, including "an example of what modern manufacturing could do for a 1939 Packard", " a paramount of automotive form over function", and "the most overrated car in the world".
