When dad died, [ 1962 ]he left mom and me with a 1959 Olds 88. The car was so big that you had to put the front bumper hard against the wall, in order to close down the garage door. Back then, the “roll-down “ doors were wood. The door would rub against the back bumper to the point that it was wearing notches in the wood itself as it went up and down. BIG car‼️ 🚗🙂

This car has the "Safety Spectrum Speedometer." It features three color speed ranges which are: GREEN/0-34 mph; AMBER/35-64 mph; RED/65-120 mph. The illusion of a bar is produced by a rotating drum behind the facia. All full-sized Oldsmobiles had this feature from model years1959-62.

Awesome information thank you so much for sharing that I saw in the advertisement piece that it was lit up green until about 30 miles an hour but I wasn’t sure about the color change

Fun fact: all 59 GM cars had to use the same front doors, meaning a Chevy door would fit a Pontiac, Olds or Buick (not sure about Caddy). Not sure about the back doors. Trim could be added or deleted to make the door look different from one make to another. After the 57 Chrysler products came out, GM hastily made the 58s a one year only style, and quickly redesigned the 59s to be more modern. Sharing doors is one way that GM cut the per unit cost down.

Cadiddle-yak also used the Buick doors in 1959. Harley Earl demanded more of the same ("I told you to put 100 more pounds of chrome on that. That's only 75!") for the '59 models, in final stages of design in late 1956. Earl had left the country for a month or so during that period and left the design studio with their instructions. It happened that one of the mid-level designers had taken a detour passing by a Plymouth storage lot and saw the all-new '57 models awaiting shipping. He hurried to the studio and piled as many of his associates in his car and organized a sort of caravan to see the new Chrysler Corporation models. Of course there was a mutiny against the Earl-mandated bulge barges and when Earl returned, he realized the new guard was right. Designers were instructed to develop designs using the Buick front door surfaces as the template, and the rest was history. Earl retired, the two-year-old B- and C-bodies and the one-year-old A-bodies (Pontiacs and Chevrolets) were replaced with all-new second-rate imitations of the '57 Chryslers, and Ford's 59s went on as previously planned with a remarkable similarity between the GM A-pillars and those of the '59-'60 Mercury (and originally planned senior Edsels as well).

The 59 left the 50s behind and is moving into the 60s…..and I like that. The dash is great. The speedometer is the redline roller! That was sooooo cool back then. Big assed wagon.

Oh, J... First and foremost, I'm a FoMoCo guy, but right next to it, I'm a wagon guy (Estate Wagon, Vista Cruiser, Town and Country, Country Squire, and my personal favorite, Colony Park, etc.) ... this was ALMOST like porn... lol... The '59/'60 GM offerings "I" think were the most handsome out of all the GM offerings until the late 60's. (My Gram had a '59 Invicta) This big, beautiful beast is gorgeous! The one thing I never understood, was why GM didn't use the flat top roof profile for the wagons in '59/'60 like they did starting in '61. I think it would have made for a much cleaner look than the oddly placed rear "vent" window and squiggly C pillar design. Thank you for this awesome episode! WYR: 1) Awwww, man... you know I gotta go Colony Park... but this Olds is a beauty! 2) And again, nothing against the Olds, but I gotta go with the Buick...

You bet I’m glad you did this episode I’m a huge wagon fan as well.. I want to cover them all in the 50s at least.. I was showing my daughter all of the different would you rather choices and her jaw kept dropping every single time she saw one like the Buick Invicta she really likes the mercury with the wood sides she’s never seen wood sides on a vehicle before.. i’ve never seen one of those in the wild definitely a car that I would love to feature one day =) I knew a guy who had a 60 finned Plymouth wagon as well as a bunch of other cars supposed to do but.. never happened

my parents had a rare 64 dynamic wagon big v8 three on the tree black on black. what a beautiful car. had to sell cause it was almost impossible for my mom to push in the clutch. very short thro but very stiff. must have been very few wi th a stick so they just made it work. should have been hydraulic

Awesome thank you so much for sharing the memory of your 1964 dynamic wagon I wonder if they could put a different spring on the clutch.. idk I’ve drove cars specially Chrysler products from the 70s with lean burn engines that the Excelerator was really hard to push because the spring on the carburetor needed adjusted or just a different spring all together

Regular production cars didn’t use hydraulic clutch actuators in those days…far too expensive compared to sticking a mechanical linkage on it.

What a great car. First round goes to the Mercury. I’ve always loved Colony Parks, we had two of them in our family when I was growing up-a ‘77 and an ‘82. Both big, powerful, comfortable, beautiful and super reliable. Second round goes to the Buick. I had a ‘59 Electra four window hardtop, and the ‘59s get my vote every time. Incidentally, I think the LeSabre wagon that you show in the photo sold a few years ago for $150,000. It’s a stunning vehicle, but holy crap, what a price! Nobody thought to save the wagons though, so now they’re scarce.

The 59 is sleeker and far less frumpy-looking than the 58. Many hints of the "Rocket" motif all over, and the two-tone stripe isn't overdone. Those who haven't seen these old wagons in person will be impressed with their size, they are BIG cars. The riding experience is something akin to being in a boat, floating and rolling along. I'm not really an Olds fan but it gets both WYR's with it's very tasteful styling.

@@What.its.like. Station wagons tend to get used up then scrapped for the heavier weight of the metal. Painters used to use them for work which used up a lot of them. Or they got wasted in demolition derbys as another viewer said. Unless they have something special going for them like the Chevy SS wagon or the Vista Cruiser with the roof edge glass, they have almost no collector value so they don't get preserved.

Classic auto Mall has a vista cruiser I want to do that next time if it’s still there.. It’s crazy how things change with time you know when you guys were kids you probably didn’t wanna be caught dead in a wagon I want to buy a 59 cross country Rambler wagon and drive across country that’s a dream of mine I want to take my kids and have a great time if it’s not a 59 cross country could be any old car I think doing a road trip and Classic Car would be awesome

I wish GM had kept the hardtop look for the ‘59 & ‘60 wagons.

It’s amazing how time changes the way you look at things everybody in the 50s saw that smoking was good for you and then it turned out to be not so good for you

My parents owned a 59 Chevy Parkwood. I really liked t h e styling. A 283 2bbl with a powerglide. Today, I own an 84 Olds Custom Cruiser that I restored. I get a lot of compliments. A lot more goodies than the 59 Parkwood had. The Olds 307 has been rebuilt with roller cam and rockers with case hardened rods. I hope this rebuild holds better than the last one which fractured the #7 piston due to poor quality parts. 😢

I also own a 2018 Buick Regal TourX. A beautiful, fully equipped wagon with z 2.4 turbo engine.

I love the new designs of the different autos of this model year, each are so cool and unique IMO. In the first WYR the Mercury would be my choice, in the second, all are great, I think the Buick has such s bold sort of menacing look, I would probably go with the Olds! 😎

I have a 60 olds myself, not a wagon but a sedan, it’s interesting to see what they removed and added on the 60, here’s hoping my restoration efforts go well :3

I'm old as this car, seen many, but never saw the embedded rocket theme. Look closer at the wonderful artistry in the body. Beneath the detailed rockets atop the fenders begin the representation of two full length boosters fused into the body. Red on the tailgate suggests a main engine.

Awesome observation I saw that as well but I didn’t see it in person I saw it when I was looking at the video footage and I was like wow that’s really cool how they did that but I didn’t comment on it.. that new camera is really something I really want to go out and shoot some more stuff with it. I only used it that one lol

It's a great series, and a rare concept getting so close to a single vehicle. Others do it but often digress excessively. Even though I was there with many of these cars, we are both learning from you. Who says the young are all hopeless? We my age were, too.

There are a lot of millennials out there that think just like you I was born in the wrong time period if I had access to a time machine I would go back in a heartbeat the only thing that I would miss is the technology I said it once before it would be really hard doing this in the 50s.. The automotive sector was totally different independent automotive journalist wasn’t really a thing..

59 Olds wagon 59 Pontiac wagon When you look at the specs for that car the 0 to 60 time of under 9 seconds is pretty spectacular for a big car like that. That car has a lot of bright work on it. IMO That makes it a lot more stylish than your normal family wagon sold at that time. Our family always had station wagons for the majority of the years we kids were growing up. I have fond memories of many meals with everyone gathered around the tailgate.

1959 Ambassador cross country wagon with a 327 does 0to 60 in about the same time there was lots of cars that were pretty quick in the 50s I just got overshadowed by the Corvette.. lol

WYR Scenario 1- 59 Plymouth wagon . My parents had one. It was our first wagon. My siblings and I had fun playing in the back when we went for a drive ( Yea imagine that now) Scenario 2 - 59 Oldsmobile wagon.

For WYR, it's the Mercury, then the Pontiac. I always liked the split grille of the Pontiacs. My uncle drove a '59 Olds four-door sedan (same color as this) for a little while, but it was way past its prime by then. The New Jersey climate wasn't kind to cars that were more than a few years old...RUST!!! So it's interesting to see an unrestored survivor car like this one. I wonder what its history is?

1. Have to go with the Mercury Colony Park 2. Identical roof and glass. Tough choice. Pontiac for its cleaner design, Buick for its demanding presence.

Great choices I tried to make the wagons hard I was showing my daughter pictures of those wagons and she was just blown away by the different designs and asked me why they don’t make cars pretty like that now.. And I told her those cars or even before me whose cars are before my dad in a lot of ways.. man long time ago

I like the '58. It's a masterpiece of monstrosity. The '59 is low, and having owned a 59 Bel Aire, I can say those seats were downright uncomfortable. The '58 was higher and more pleasant for a human being to sit in.

This car would make a good surf wagon. Plenty of room for the boards.

There were no full sized Oldsmobile wagons produced from 1965 to '70. Oldsmobile wagons returned with the introduction of the 1971 Custom Cruiser. Buick stopped full sized wagon production at the same time but resumed when the Estate wagon was introduced in 1970. My cars of choice here would be the DeSoto wagon and the Buick wagon.

7:50 I know they weren't thinking about it back then, but that "eyebrow" above the grill, it seems like that would trap a LOT of air, and not be very aerodynamic at all.

Thank you for posting this car and your review. Thank you for going into detail about this car. That headlight design theme was used in the late 1960's and again in the 1980's on the Olds Firenza. it is interesting how the wagon carried on until 1992 and was called Custom Cruiser from the 1970's through the early 1990's. The other interesting thing is the attention to detail as well. Thank you.

Hi Jay!: The Olds wagon is SO COOL! 1959 was a pretty good year styling wise for GM. Some of the cars were a little spaceship looking, but they were all at least semi-attractive. In 1958, you had an ok looking Chevy and Pontiac, but the Buick, Olds, and Cadillac. . .UGH! But the 1959 cars paved the way for the NICE GM designs of the 1960's. Heck, everyone had great looking cars in the 1960's! At any rate, I really like the 1959 Oldsmobile. This wagon version is a really interesting ride! Plus you can haul stuff! WYR's Oldsmobile for both!

The absence of the brake master cylinder in the engine bay is indeed confounding. It's a hanging pedal, so maybe it's somewhere in/under the dashboard?

One has to saythat there was a lot of design work in the car bodies at that time, as opposed to nowadays, where autos are all looking cheap but cost more.

58 Dash, but rest 59... When that thing was made, the back seat passengers were generally kids, standing on the seat...hey, it was the 50's... 59 Mercury (found one I see) 59 Buick

Some of these land monsters were wonderfully strange. This beast could take on any SUV for cargo and passengers. Too bad the SUVs killed them but now they are at least back as a species of car/wagon and not an SUV. Back in the day you had to parallel park to get your license. You had plenty of glass and mirrors, but you were steering a high-powered barge!

ALLWAYS thought those Olds with the double spacing of the headlights was kinda visually challenging...like my eyes wouldn't focus properly..😅🙂😐

It would be great to buy a 1961 Chevy Impala 2-door bubble top with a 283 engine.

The '58 was ugly because it was so chunky. Looked like it needed a diet. Big improvement in '59

That car was in rough shape. Maybe someone could adopt it and rescue it. Don't like any of the choices you gave us but for looks it has to be the DeSoto. I prefer the 58 model year for GM.

59 Buick, Oldsmobile and Chevy wagons all seem kinda yuck to me. I'm not a big Chrysler guy but if I was alive in 59, I would have gone for the Chrysler wagon with the 383 but the Mercury's wagon looks like it was designed as a wagon and not just a add-on to a sedan, the Mercury's 10x better looking than all other 59 wagons.

WYR: 1) Mercury - a hardtop; Mercury built more hardtop wagons than any sigle nameplate. 2) the Buick, unless I were offered a Bonneville, but the one pictured is not.

Is that a 9 passenger wagon? Usually if the rear seat is split, the smaller seat folds forward so people can get into the 3rd row rear seat.

I couldn’t get the tailgate open any time anything gives me problems like that I stop trying so I’m not sure I think it’s a six passenger but I’m not entirely sure

Typically, the rear seats in “third row” wagons in those days were entered through the tailgate. The second row was virtually always a bench that only folded down to extend the load floor.

Would you rather 1: DeSoto, then Edsel, then Studebaker Lark, then (wild card) Borgward Isabella Kombi. Would you rather 2: Buick by miles on styling, but the torque tube drive is a downside. Pontiac, maybe, but I'm not reaally a fan of the '59='60 GM styling from any division.

Speaking of wild cards, Rambler Six, Rebel, Classic, and Ambassador wagons of that period were handy size and amazingly capacious. '61 Ambassador has unique and attractive styling. Still, I can't overlook the torque tube drive.

That was a fast car for the time

It was in the kicker is it was a base model three speed manual is the key their automatic version doesn’t go as fast

Beautiful car, but needs work. Is $25k a fair price considering the pitted chrome, chipped paint, beat up roof interior, and dirty interior doors, etc.?

I hate to nit-pick but, GM didn't use the Q-jet until 65. What you should have said it Rochester 4-jet.

It says Quadra jet in the advertisement piece.. @@What.its.like. BOP had new innovations before Chevy did in many cases. like THM400 made its debut in Pontiac in 64. So Q-jets may have been earlier than 65 (that is when chevy did it) but I seriously doubt 59. In 59 Chevy used Carter WCFB 4 bbls, I think the 4-jet came around 62/63.

I just thought that was very interesting I didn’t think they went back that far I stop saying what the carburetors were unless it’s stated in an advertisement piece..

6:15 I don't think the Quadrajet was available in 1959.

@@What.its.like. Thanks a LOT for sending that link! I see they call it a "Quadri-Jet" ... I suppose a marketing term for a 4-bbl carb. vs the "Quadrajet" which was such a specific type of popular carburetor through the '60s. I remember when the Quadrajets were popular, and there was this ONE GUY who was a GENIUS because he was expert at overhauling Quadrajets. I think the vacuum secondaries scared the heck out of everyone back then.

1950s capitalist Burma had cars like that.

Classic auto mall has 1000 cars over 1000 cars for sale.. I’m not sure what you mean by digital magazine information I get a lot of the brochures from this site oldcarbrochures.com

I absolutely love doing it I love making videos on cars that never got videoed or reviewed everybody is in there something different in the different cars never got love this channel gives them all the love that they never got.. I try to be as thorough as possible with all the angles for anybody that’s restoring these they can see where the trim pieces go

Let’s Hear It for the Boy by Deniece Williams. Featured on the album of the same name. Also on the Footloose Original Soundtrack. It topped at #1 on the billboard 100 for the week ending May 26, 1984. Also #1 on R&B and Dance lists. It rose to number 2 in the UK, #1 was Wake Me Up Before You Go Go by Wham. On a side note I met George Michael in a gay bar. This was a long long time prior to him coming out publicly: He told me the music was better in the gay bar. I had already been talking to him. I went to the restroom and he came in as I was washing my hands. I had told him that some of my friends said he was gay and some said straight. I’m the restroom he asked what I thought, we heard the outer door open and he pulled me into a stall, note I was very willing. He pulled me to an embrace and kissed me tongue and all. He said now what do you think and I told him I was leaning towards gay, but it would take more than a kiss for me to be convinced, but it was a great kiss. I thought he was gay, but I told him I thought he might be bisexual, but with more than a kiss I might be convinced otherwise. Damn he was hot and I still love listening to him sing and talk. He had an amazing accent. So sexy.

Linear look. Is that what they called this monstrosity? Only slightly less ugly than the over-chromed '58 Blimp 88 and 98. Quadrajet 4 bbl? The 1954-63 Chilton's say they used Carter carbs.

Sweet choices

Wagons in this era were the cross-overs of the time. GM's 1958 cars were very unattractive to me. the 57's and the 59's look better. I know that the wagons of the 1950's were huge - long and wide - but only as tall as a sedan. That's the big difference between then and now.
