1959 Maserati Tipo 61: Climb Into The Birdcage
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
Join us this week for a special film as we follow along with Marino Franchitti for a track session in Nick Mason’s 1959 Maserati Tipo 61 “Birdcage.” Delicate and purposeful in single swooping package, this is the car that defines what it means to be ethereal, and it is the best looking bit of motorsport engineering to be housed in a web of chromoly steel.

This might possibly be the most valuable car we've ever seen on Petrolicious. The fact that it's being filmed running around a track is a testament to Nick Mason's reputation as a true petrolhead. When he crashed his McLaren F1 at Goodwood earlier this year, I cringed along with car guys everywhere, still I said "I'm so glad it wasn't the birdcage!"

Wrong model in the title though. It’s a 60, of which there were 6. And as such should be 2 litre.

It's nice to actually see the car and not just drone shots of lens flared landscape.
An obsessive petrolhead and the World's biggest Pink Floyd fan (I saw David Gilmour perform live in Pompeii on June 7th last year) so seeing Franchitti in Mason's birdcage is an absolute delight. What a car! UMMAGUMMA!!!!!!!!!!

Marcus Hogan yeah this is one of those cars where I could spend countless hours just looking at it. Studying every little detail throughout the entire car. And I love that Nick himself uses it and allows others like Marino to share the incredible experience of piloting this gorgeous car down the track. I hope Nick or someone close to him reads our comments and understands how you and I and thousands of others appreciate him not keeping this car locked away in a vault but puts it out there for the world to see!
wow, what a driver. the clip of him sideways through the long left sweeper was amazing..
Marino did an outstanding job of describing this legendary car. The 'Birdcage' T61 seems a bit forgotten recently, which is a shame because it really was one of the truly outstanding cars of its moment in time.
Anyone familiar with Nick Mason's collection knows how incredible it is and the birdcage is the jewel in the crown. Quite possibly the most incredible car ever. Stunning to look at, beautiful to listen to and for those who have been fortunate enough to have had the experience, I'm sure wonderful to drive. I've been hoping Petrolicious would some day cover this particular car. Now that they have, it's all downhill from here!
I clenched at 5:35 lol Another awesome film thank you.

Masterpiece 👌
Another one to file under “How to #FilmTastefully” Makes me feel better about certain ultra-wealthy owners. I know at least some of these guys don’t do it as a flashy status symbol or a cold speculative “investment”. Guys like Nick Mason are in it for the passion, and having someone like Marino Franchitti look after these ultra-rare cars and exercise them is a demonstration of good taste and judgement. It makes me feel good to see these cars getting exercised, and brought out for the public to see. Kudos to all involved in this collection. Thanks to Petrolicious for another very well-produced film. I am undergoing chemotherapy right now, which sucks, but this film brightened my day considerably. Well done. 👍

Back in the '90s I was out at White Post restorations in Virginia, they had a Birdcage chassis on a bench/trestle, such a beautiful thing. As I recall the tubes were brazed together, not welded, beautiful joints. Such an intricate thing.
hands down one of the best car videos i've ever seen. Petrolicous!
Mason's garage is Paradise! Thank you for this vídeos, as I said before there is no better way to start a day...
I met Marino Franchitti at Lime Rock Park when I was just a college kid. He was so nice to me, and spoke to me honestly and we shared stories about Jim Clark, a shared hero of ours. I'll always be a huge fan of Marino Franchitti, no matter what he drives for now on. He's a true gentleman.
He has a 250 GTO in his garage, I have spiders and brooms in mine.

Just when you think Petrolicious videos can't get any better ...
Classic Maserati are fantastic, and the competition one are jewels and piece of history. need more of these :)
I saw one of these in a race at Lake Garnett in Kansas in '63. driven by a sports car dealer from Wichita. It walked away from two cobras and a wildly driven Corvette to win there. It was awesome to watch as each car was pushed to the max, the Cobras were so powerful and impressive but the little low slung Maserati just seemed to lap so gracefully. Quite a work of art, too.
Nine minutes of my life well spent watching this! Fantastic.
Goosebumps! Well done Petrolicious and Marino.
I love how those big steering wheels look and the cars are implecabe

Because I'm 6'7" the first thing I have to do is replace those big beautiful steering wheels with a tiny aftermarket wheel. A little part of me dies.
Wow. This is something special. I really enjoy car videos, but what I especially LOVE is learning about the great ones of the past.
Marino is awesome. Loved watching him in the ALMS, and his love for this car shows through here.
Yet another superbly shot video with wonderful subject matter from Petrolicious ! ELEVEN out of TEN !!
What a fantastic tribute to a model which brought Maserati glory at the Nurburgring. Glorious. Just glorious. Outdid yourselves with this one Petrolicious.
BEAUTIFUL MACHINE. MORE PETROLICIOUS PLEASE.
Marino Franchitti is a world class driver. When he says he's humbled by the perfomance and soul of this car you know how great -not good=great this car is.
The tipo 61 Birdcage is one of the most beautiful cars from that era. Thanks for this vid, Petrolicious, again!
Art on wheels. Breathtaking from every angle. Add the sound of that raucous, free revving engine and it truly is a joy to the senses. Well done Petrolicious!
Wolf your right.... A true masterpiece! I've always thought the Maserati Tipo 61(birdcage) was the most outlandish and beautiful car of that era...
i was absolutely NOT prepared for him to just wring it right on the knife edge of control like that. masterclass owner/driver!
I love this channel, but this video is at the top for me... I really felt like I experienced the car both through the words of Marino and the fantastic footage , music and editing... some videos I feel like I'm lacking basic information about the car, if that makes any sense... This video pushed every button , at least for me... Thank you very much...

Just have to Google it. Fantastic car and history.
I'm so glad I found this video! It takes me back to the early '60s, sitting in Thunder Valley at Road America at Elkhart Lake, WI, which really lived up to its name as the cars came out of Canada Corner to go up under the bridge. The long-tailed Tipo 60s didn't impress me nearly as much as the 61s, which looked more nimble. I have its song in my ears and the only thing missing is the sweet smell of castor oil.... Thanks
I have seen one of these in person and it's so cool, but quite small, I loved it.
Beautiful in its simplicity
Car is driven the way it should be and not in a museum. I love it 😍 would like to hear the car without the music
Im sitting a home on a gloomy rainy winters dayb with a a blanket & a pot of coffee watching Petrolicious all day ooh yeaa !!!

Wow. Get him to drive every car from now on!
Nick Mason has a 250GTO So awesome, also one of my favorite bands of all time
First time I saw one of these in the flesh, I was blown away, the chassis is incredible
Killing it at 5:30! this thing is fast!!!
Absolutely incredible production, epic car, unbelievable collection, fantastic driving

Close. I would take Ralph Lauren's collection over his. And Jay Leno is not that far behind.
I was corner marshall for a mixed vintage race at Sears Point in the 70s that featured a birdcage up against Lolas, a Porsche 356, even an old Allard. Drivers were going all out and we were so impressed to see that priceless car being risked.
Cool ! I have seen this car in Germany on Nuerburgring Oldtimer Grand Prix in 1989. It is a pleasure to see it again.
Best Petrolicious Video Yet! Epic car epic history and Castle Combe of all places !
As a wee gearhead with my best friend and his Dad, he a 'club racer' in an e-type, caught the sound then the sight of this beauty at Riverside. From that moment on when I hear the term "race car" the 'birdcage' is the image in my head... then, now, always.
Love the "aeronautic" aesthetic and forms of these 50's-60's cars, especially the italians.
Wow! I heard about this car when Maserati made a concept car inspired by it a few years ago but hadn t actually seen the original. What an incredible garage... I would love to hang out there an entire week end with no sleep.
One can only dream of such. You're very fortunate indeed. This is what true driving is, NO COMPUTERS, that's why it is a whole process involvement- you have to pay attention. Love the car and the video. Thanks very much.
What a collection in your garage, man... WHOOOOOUHH!!
Wow, absolutely stunning film in every single way! Wow...
The colour combination of the steuerung wheel and the speedo is just beautiful...
What a great film. Thanks, Petrolicious. This one was just right on.
Wow, that thing moves! Sounds gorgeous too!
Just hearing the Car run on the track, that engine and trans are a perfect match as it Hummms for more
Petrolicious you are the best. Thank you.
Wonderful video, thank all of you for sharing!!!
I love watching these cars put through their paces by serious drivers. This is a beautiful car and another well-produced video. I put it up near the top of my Petrolicious list along with the one of Derek HIll driving the Ferrari 250 GTO hard.
Wonderful car, as usual the best photography of any car fan KZread channel. A total pleasure.
amazing... simply amazing
Thank you Petrolicious! Awesome story of a car I never knew about.
Lovely car, old cars have so much more charm than new
I loved the video! Thanks for making it!
One of my favourite cars.
Cue Goosebumps @5:35
I go to the Historic Car Festival at Sonoma quite often and I'm always amazed at how drivers can go so fast on those skinny, bias ply tires!
Great video and what a passionate guy. Well done!
Another beautiful video. Thank you, Petrolicious! IM 8)
So enjoyed this, one of your best.
I've a constructive criticism for you, Petrolicious. In many of your videos there are times when the presenter of the car is explaining important details of the car's construction, yet the images you choose to accompany them does little to show what it is the person would like us to be appreciating at that moment. For example, in this video the presenter enlightens us on the beauty of the complex birdcage like construction dreamt up by the genius of Giulio Alfieri, and the whole time I'm hearing about it I'm wishing I was seeing it, from multiple angles. The images never fully materialize for the viewer Your videos, while in most every other way are top notch, suffer bouts of editorial confusion.

Aaron Maughan I couldn’t agree more. This video, indeed the whole channel has nothing on your video offerings, sorry, offering. Having just given it the 24th viewing in the 6 months since upload, I thought I’d offer some constructive criticism. Firstly, you appear to have filmed it using a potato. No, that’s unfair. A rotten potato. I’m not sure if the late ‘90’s webcam-like definition, or the low single figure frame rate add more to the overall quality. Your presentation ‘skills’ are...unique. Your choice of subject, is a piece of pipe with some rotting leaves around it. I realise the birdcage has nothing on such a dramatic theme. Kudos. Your video suffers from editorial confusion. For instance, at the beginning of the video, you speak about the pump, the very subject of your title, being ‘down there’ whilst not showing it. I am sure many of the 24 viewers wished they could have seen the creation by the entitled, egotistical know it all, rather than having to stare at some low definition leaves. All the best, great channel!

I'm not chasing subscribers nor trying to make a living uploading videos. I do not purport to be anything more than the average guy with a ten dollar phone from Walmart. My kids understand why I am thrifty, as they enjoy more than buttons and gizmos. Your criticism is of the apples to oranges variety. If ram pump info is what you seek, I am not the source. There are many others out there with more to offer you. I am but a student on the matter. Good luck in your quest.

Fabulous. Great car. Great driver. Great video!
As always what a beautiful video and what a beautiful car
Not my kind of car design wise, but the video, and story that went with it, drew me right in. Excellent.
Great video, well done guys! Would love to see some raw onboard footage of Marino driving it!
A lovely film for a stunning car. Nice to know that I helped Nick just a tiny bit in his "hobby". Wonder if my dozens of concerts and all the albums would get me a lap or two?
Amazing explanation. I could imagine how it drives. Veeeeery nice car!!!!!!
Meravigliosa!
Brilliant driving, really going for it.
Bravo- To this specific content. And a tip of the hat to all of those responsible for the design, physical creation and preservation of this iconic car -
A racing car driven by a racing driver on a race track. What a great video
There was a "Birdcage" maserati at the Stanford car show a few years back, I got a good look at it with the covers off. It was quite a work of art. Owner didn't run it while I was there, but that was ok.
Beautiful car!
Its funny to see the shifter on the right in a right hand drive car. Love that sound.
Super stuff!
You got this one on the nose. Thank you.
I remember seeing a "birdcage" sometime in the very late 1950s at an SCCA event in Delaware or Maryland. Don't remember the track name but I do remember the stands were painted purple and people joking that the track was owned by "The Purple Hill Gang". And I remember Masten Gregory being the driver with it at that event. (Don't know if I've conflated the two, or not, but I don't think so.) Got to touch it and run my hands over it in pure wonder at how so many little tubes could be put and stay together to make a race car. Simply astonishing to a teenager who drove a well usedTR-3!
Painted here like a Briggs Cunningham team car. Saw several of these race very effectively in SoCal including Billy Krause's big win at the 1960 LA Times Grand Prix in a slightly different Tipo 61. Of the open-toppers, the 'Cage was the last great, classic, front-engined sports racer... and with that ultra-stiff frame and Offenhauser-like motor, easily capable of outrunning a big-bore Testa Rosa, Maserati 450s, Lister Chevy or Scarab, or even a mid-engined Porsche like the one James Dean rolled on on Highway 41/46.
Amazing car great video.
See kids learn to play great music like Nick Mason and you’ll be able to own beautiful cars like these one day.
Perfect. Thank you.
Awesome video
proper driving skills onto the race track there !
Beautiful auto!!👍😎
Alan Connell of Fort Worth Texas had one that had a Ferrari V12 stuck in it. It had the exhaust manifold tubes snaked through the little triangles. The Maserati engine was put in a Cooper Monaco. The guy that had it had to have the car realigned after every weekend race. That Birdcage has been restored to original condition with a Maserati engine and is used in historic racing. I get taking something back to it's original condition for historic accuracy but I think it is a real shame that it does not have a Ferrari V12in it. That's like unchopping Billy Gibbons Cadzilla to showroom stock condition.
Billy Krause at Riverside. The last great front-engined "prototype."
nice car
Dead set Marino is quick. What a machine.
Epic!
