1958 Briggs & Stratton Model 6B Rebuild, New Rings & Valves Part 1 of 3

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Part 1 of 3 on rebuilding a 1958 (i said 59 on the video by mistake), I put in new rings, which was a good decision since the old rings were stuck on the piston, and new valves since one valve was stuck. Part 2 will be shorter and will focus just on getting spark. Thanks for Watching!!!

Great video Frank; nice to see the tear down and rebuild - it looked in pretty good nick for the year.

Pretty nice old engine, I love the old vintage Briggs flathead engines. I have a 1965 Briggs 4HP horizontal model 10 that a buddy of mine gave me that he rescued from the scrapyard. The engine is in decent shape and turns over freely and isn't locked up and it has compression when I pull it over with the rope, it wasn't getting spark but I fixed that by cleaning the points and sanding the rust off the coil so it gets a good ground. Haven't tried starting it yet but I'm going to do a complete rebuild on it, bought a new OEM Briggs standard piston and ring set, a complete engine gasket set that includes new oil seals and I also ordered a new spindle bearing for the crankshaft as I saw on the parts diagram that this engine has a ball bearing on the crank so I figured I should replace that as well.

Thanks, same here! I hear ya! Those are great engines too, one of my favorites is the 5 horse model 13, very similar engine to the 4 hp. some parts are the same too. Thanks for Watching!!!

Appreciate that. Some things are getting harder to find, like I couldn't find brand new rings or valves, but i could find gaskets for it no problem. Your welcome, Thanks for Watching!!!

Great Video, love them old Briggs engines, I found a old Eclipse mower, think it is a 1956, has a Briggs 1 6/10 hp motor on it, it turned over good and compression. Pull and cleaned Carb. started on first pull, I couldn't believe it. Keep up the good work Buddy!👍

I think they should use that type of valve keeper on all of them. Eager to see it run now!

Sneaking those over sized rings in is some "old school chit" I hated lapping valves, last time I did that was about 15 years ago. Looking forward to see how you deal with that spark problem. Great vid.

Thanks, not really, I just drilled it and re-threaded, there was enough to get a bite on and it was to small to weld a nut to. Thanks for Watching!!!

I hear ya. some are some are not as easy to find. Gaskets are easy to get, but I had to order NOS rings and valves, could not get it to cross to anything else for some reason. The bore appears to be a standard model 9 size (didn't measure to verify) but the piston may be different. And the coil problem in part 2, that took some digging to figure that one out! But short answer, yes, parts are available but it takes a little work to find some of them. Thanks for Watching!!!
