1955 AJS Model 18S 500cc Single Motorcycle - Part 6 - Fixing a leaky seat!
In this 5th video, I am covering up the hole in the under side of the seat to prevent the old seat foam from dropping onto the rear mudguard and sticking to the paintwork
Music: Sailing - Delicate Steve from the KZread Studio Audio Library
I thought this music was really nice and sounded like Pearl Jam, which would be appropriate for a Jam-pot!

    Nice fix for that problem. If the seat cover were in worse shape, one could replace that foam rubber altogether.

    Another well thought out, purposeful preservation Mike! We’re having your kinda weather here in Wisconsin! Rain,Rain and more Rain! Hopefully dry enough today to cut the grass and sneak in a ride on a classic motorbike. 🌞😎

    Great job on that seat. Smart to use that adhesive vinyl. Your safety wire technique on the tank bolts looks good. I can never do that right, it always looks sloppy. Speaking of tank bolts, I have a cautionary tale to tell. The previous owner of my 64 TR6 had the wrong bolts on the tank for some reason. The stock bolts have a very short amount of threads and a stepped shoulder for a reason, so you can't over tighten them. Well I over tightened one of mine not realizing it wasn't the right bolt....it put a small crack in the bottom of my gas tank. I managed to seal the tank with POR-15 and it hasn't leaked since, but if you know anyone selling a 63-65 Triumph 650 tank, I wouldn't mind replacing it at some point. : )

    Maybe if the hole was there to allow air to escape ( which sounds reasonable ) a cheap fix could be to install a Tarpaulin snap eyelet somewhere else on the seat cover for the same purpose ? Ray 🇬🇧

    There are plenty of other holes and gaps for the air to leak out of 😉

    I have successfully used spray contact adhesive to stop foam rubber from degrading like that. It forms a "skin" over the crumbling surface and keeps it in place.

    What was the purpose of the hole under the seat? It may have been there to allow air to escape underneath when initially sitting on it and thus preventing a seat blowout, tearing of the covering.

    Was the Crunchie reference for us in Blighty?

  • @Bradshaw812
    @Bradshaw8122 жыл бұрын

    There's a sizable hole there now and the **"Crunchie" effect will no doubt continue if some action isn't taken. Depending on the where the rider actually sits, and how much sponge is left, is there an option to fill the cavity with expanding builder's foam? It could simply be injected underneath the new flap which would contain the expanding foam and directly replace the sponge that's been lost. ** Properly called "cinder-toffee"; other brands are available!

    Nice work! And a pleasurable video of it! Do you reckon that the ”pleather” streched over the rear mudguard might provide a capillary water trap and consequently a corrosion hazard? Perhaps nothing to worry about unless you move back to the old country and its less dry climate?

  • @iivaridark6850

    Well, I think there was a reason for that opening - it might not be good to have an air balloon type seat and now, when the rider sits down on the bike, there might be some opening sooner or later from where the dust still might come out. But a good temporary fix. Someone might make those cushions according to the model?

    @@tomeoftheancient2225 I don't. This is like patching the bullet hole while the projectile ruptured the aorta. 🤔 Well it's not british if t doesn't leak somewhere, so guess it's fine that way. 🤷
