1951 Sunrise Tequila Cocktail - Cocktails After Dark
Is this Sunrise Tequila Cocktail Recipe an early version of a Tequila Sunrise? Maybe, maybe not... But this drink recipe does contain a couple of ingredients that we see over and over in early tequila cocktails - Grenadine and Creme de Cassis. Every drink down through cocktail history, inspires the next generation of cocktails. This early tequila cocktail comes from a 1951 Jose Cuervo cocktail book, which certainly has an important place in the history of cocktails.
Sunrise Tequila:
Into an 8 ounce glass put one cupful cracked ice, then top with about 1 ½ inch of shaved ice. Into this squeeze the juice of one-half lime and place rind in glass. Add:
One jigger Tequila Cuervo
Exactly six dashes Grenadine
Exactly two dashes Creme de Cassis
Fill remainder of glass with sparkling water and stir slightly

The mixto can be made of 49% distilled sugars (Corn as you say etc) and its the mixto that gives you the "tequila headache" whereas the 100% Agave very rarely gives you any headache the next day. Great video Glen

Neat! I've never had a sunrise tequila. I like a tequila sunrise, and I also like to substitute campari in place of grenadine.

Tequila Sunrise I had was Tequila, orange juice mixed, then grenadine dollop (much more than 3 dashes) added and allowed tp sink to the bottom. A big change from 1951 to late 60s

Glen, it's a good thing you made a Sunrise Tequila and not a Tequila Sunrise. You think the Tequila police are tough? Wait 'til Don Henley gets his copyright lawyers after you. 😉

May I just compliment your upload schedule you have been doing so great for a loooooooong time, I have personally gone through most of your videos from the begging and you have really found a style. Your camera work is great, your video and sound quality, clever cuts I assume shooing the cat mid lime squeeze :D and OH MY GOD the info you give, is just amazing. I was wondering where I might go about online, sending you a personal translation of an old cookbook I have found from my family, it is a collection of culinary school/ cut out recipes from, I don't know magazines? I would not like to send it to a cookbook as it's somewhat of a family heirloom but I would be more than happy to take pictures and send a translated document of the whole thing. I think it might give you some value as it is purely Czech and since I assume it comes from before 1975 AT LEAST (sorry might be exactly that or older, I haven't inspected the book for dates as it is just a mess of loose papers and everything is very yellowed, so I am guessing the age right now), Czech republic was occupied by Germany and then Russia. So a lot of our cooking has been somewhat sheltered from outside influence in recent history. Since you make a lot of mainly North American old recipes I thought this might intrigue you. Where would I go about sending this to you? Sorry for the typos, dealing with insomnia and it is currently 5am hah. Edit: please let me add that it's about a 7cm thick book A4 size.

Hi, Glen! Loving the show! I just noticed that the recipe in Spanish has the grenadine and cassis measurements in teaspoons, 1/4th and 1/8th, respectively. Obviously the ratio between the two isn't even consistent with the ration between the number of dashes in the English version of the recipe, which adds to the DVC (dash volume confusion). Anyway this is in my list of cocktails to try next. Thanks for the channel!

IF you can't taste the cassis or grenadine (I assume with that little its really just added for coloring and maybe a touch of sweetness) then really this is just a fancied up Ranch Water.

I think I would prefer this with the 100% Agave over a modern Tequila Sunrise made with 51% Agave and 49% random grain alcohol. If I'm going to mix anything with orange juice, it's usually real Champagne or an Italian Prosecco.

"Mixto?"...Mixto is NOT TEQUILA! Corn liquor is for Bourbon. This is becoming as difficult as finding a REAL Rye whiskey. I end up squinting at the small print on labels or reading mash bills on line.
