The Philippines is actually a rich country. Its just mismanaged a lot. Some of you probably have never even been there. The problem is the corruption that is there. You also go to realize lots of the educated workers are not there any more. They are working overseas. Its a great country and great people. I am american and my family lived there during the war. I had family die in Bataan. My fiancee is filipina.

@Jason Jones - How is it rich? 20-25% of the population lives in poverty and under the official subsistence level - and I don´t think you know how many Filipinos have to live on the equivalent of 2 USD a day or less. Look at GDP per capita - and you will see The Philippines is still on the level with countries like Morocco, Swaziland and Jordan. I think I know what you mean, but I don´t see The Philippines as a rich country. With it´s nature, with all its natural ressources it has all the potential to become one of the most wealthy countries in Southeast Asia. But as a matter of fact many people there are struggling more now to make ends meet than under Marcos. (However I am NOT saying that Marcos - all in all - was good for the country).

Rich, until the Judeo-Bolshevik agents Ninoy and Cory Aquino intistigated the 1986 EDSA Revolution to topple Marcos and make the Filipinos slaves of the IMF. A fate narrowly avoided by South Korea under Park Chung-hee, hence why they are so rich today.

No words to describe this but absolutely gorgeous. Now I know how mantras like ‘pearl of the orient’, ‘Paris of Asia’ and ‘queen of the Pacific’ came to be. How Manila went from this to what we have now is a total disgrace.

You don’t know what you’re talking about? Do you think those Americans took pictures of the slums? I was in Manila in 1986 and it was a waste land thanks to the corruption. Now Manila is much more prosperous as is the whole of the Philippines. Back then you were poor skinny rice eaters. Now you see every one eating at Jollibee and McDonald’s etc. young Filipinos are 10 times more prosperous than their parents. Manila has population problems yes, way too many people, but in general things are way better now than ever before

filipinos were not yet ready for independence from the united states. at that time, we filipinos were not that mature yet. the mentality, the skills, they still needs some ripening. look at the kind of presidents we had/have (past to present).. how come we voted for them? if we were mature then, we could have america behind us by now. we have them as a model. we tailored our constitution from their constitution. all we have to do is copy them and improve on aspects where they failed.

You should see Guamanians when they arrive in Makati or BGC and how shocked that it's nicer than anything on their island. That's why when they need a good hospital or even good shopping, they fly 3 hours to Manila

Pero ngayon more on technology na yung kumokontrol sa buhay natin yung tipong hindi ka mumubuhay kung walang walang CELLPHONE sa buhay mo. The best talaga yung panahon noon kesa ngayon.

It wasn't mention what specific year in the 50's this was taken, but no matter what year it was, it's still amazing to see these are taken just few years after the war when the whole country especially Manila was carpet bombed during WW2 and many citizens and soldiers died. The people we see in these video are survivors of that war. The country was called as The Pearl of the Orient, bit that all changed after the war. No matter how much they tried to rebuild the country after the war, it seems the country was never the same again.

1930s-1940s Philippines was like Paris and New York. May trains pa noon parang San Francisco ngayon. Sinayang ng gobyerno ganda ng Manila. Halos wala na natira sa old buildings. Lahat ginawang modernized. Tayo sana ngayon ang Paris of Asia!

Manila is a very beautiful city! Bata pa ko nung 50s pero naalala ko mababait ang mga Manileños, sadly nadungisan ang imahe ng manileños at manila dahil sa mga probinsyanong sumiksik at naging skwatter. Most of the time nowadays people from rural ares tends to make fun of Manila as a dirty city pero sa totoo lang mga kapwa din nila probinsyano ang dahilan kung bakit naging madumi ang Manila.

The Principalia class continues to dominate and fought against the reforms by Pres Quezon up to Pres Marcos. Now they rule after they secured their positions and influence using the 1987 constitution.

The 40' 50's were the golden era of Philippines not Marcos years that was the beginning of deterioration of Philippines. My parents were born in 1932, my father finished only grade 3 and yet he could converse in English, (They were taught by American teachers) while my mother is illiterate but she can read numbers and can do addition and subtraction pretty well. I find her amazing without a proper education. She only managed 3 months in first grade when her mother died. Fast forward, even college educated can't do math and compose both Tagalog and English essays. Our language is dying, in my opinion.

Hahaha... ok, Daddybob - here goes: "GoldBurst, you are correct - jeepney drivers back in time were very kind and courteous, respectful of their passengers, know how to obey traffic rules. Now? Most of them are good-for-nothing. Others just learned how to go forward and backward and decided to drive professionally without any inkling of this thing called "road courtesy" nor "traffic rules and regulations". These people should undergo a seminar about driving before being given a professional driver's license so that they will be aware of the regulations plus 'good manners and right conduct'. It would be fun if only I can hit drivers beating the red light just so they could get to their prospective passengers first, ahead of other drivers - they don't even bother to stop their dyip (jeepney) in proper loading places... pwe!!!" --- There, Daddybob - sorry but it's so hard to do the translation word for word because the sentence construction is quite different, but the gist of what I translated is quite complete... I hope you get what I mean... hope to hear from you soon, may i call you 'friend'?

Dear Daddybob... If you are referring to what R D (above) is saying, he says like this:..." He is affirming what Gold burst is saying. I will first translate what Gold burst says:.. In those days, there were only two things that he remembered, one was the AC Jeep. It was a type of jeep that was short that could accommodate 4 persons only but if 6 persons were accommodated, it became crowded already. And the second type was the one that could accommodate 6 persons on one side and another 6 persons on another side that which became 12 persons in totality. In those times children were afraid of their parents. They did not roam around during noontime. They were obedient to their parents and they were not hard-headed. Their only place to go for recreation was at the Luneta Park.... More or less this is what RD siad on what he posted. Well, here is the transcriptions of what Gold burst said on his post....Drivers in those times were kind, respectful and knew how to obey traffic rules. But now many are very unruly and without respect. Having learned how to do a reverse and forward can already drive without knowing anything about traffic rules and courtesy. It is right and fitting today that those would-be drivers must be required to attend seminars before they are given a driver license to know more about road courtesy and traffic rules.
