I know this is an older video back in 2017 but I love it. I just made my 1950’s hot cocoa. Thank you Stephen for leaving your moms older videos available for us to look back on. ❤😊

You are so welcome!
I remember the first time my younger sister made cocoa. She used the recipe from the back of the Hershey’s cocoa can. She proudly called us when it was finished. With my first sip, I realized something was wrong. The cocoa was extremely SALTY. Upon questioning, we discovered she had misread the recipe and added a DISH of salt instead of a DASH of salt! We discovered shortly after that she needed glasses. Another fun memory from the 1950’s.

In 1944 my mother used to bring home friends from Choir Practice Thursday nights, and made this, exactly this way minus the marshmallows. It was also minus the sugar. The sugar bowl was brought to the table for everyone to stir in the amount they wanted. Sugar was rationed, of course, during the War.
I took home-ec in 7th grade in 1972 and our first cooking experience was Hot Cocoa and Cinnamon Toast made in the oven, not a toaster!
Great to see you back in the kitchen Miss Phyllis. Hope Steely and Sunny are still getting along. Tell Steely he needs to make another video to update us on how things are going.
If only I could have a mug full with her. When Phyllis comes up in my videos, I see it as a visit from a sweet friend. RIP .
My grandma used to make it like this but she would add cinnamon sticks in it when she added the milk and let them sit for a little bit...it gave it a good taste=)
Miss Phyllis, I learned how to make hot cocoa just like this in the 1970s and 80s when I was young. Used to come home from my paper route on freezing cold days and fix it up on the stove. So much better than instant.
Phyllis your videos really make my day better.
Phyllis, You probably know this already, If Sunny doesn't come when called try the universal puppy call most if not all breeders use. With an uplifted happy voice call out "Here Puppppiessss, Here pup, pup, oup, puppppiessss". Most likely Sunny's breeder used it, we all do. Btw... I've made many of your recipes to the delight of my 85y/o mother. She said to tell you, some of your recipes are older than you think. She remembers them in the 30's &40's. My are they GOOD! Thank you so much!

I'm going to try that puppy call. Sunny's breeder used what sounded like a clicker. Whatever it was all the puppies came running, it sounded like a clicker to me. I tried snapping my finders a couple of times and Sunny came running when I did the snapping I guess it sounded like a clicker. I prefer being able to call him.
Sunny looks even cuter now that he's trimmed. You have two adorable babies. Thank you for the video, Ms. Phyllis!
I was the cocoa maker at our house. We used Fry's brand cocoa and it was made just the same way you made it. It never ceases to amaze me that things were so much the same so far away. I grew up in British Columbia Canada. I have a funny story about cocoa. A few years ago my brother was on a chocolate milk kick. He was using Nestlie's Quick. One day he said he missed the hot cocoa I made when we were kids and would I buy cocoa next time I was shopping. I told him he could just add hot milk to Nestlie's Quick but he insisted it wasn't the same and it had to be the one I used to make when we were kids. So I bought a big carton of cocoa. A few weeks later he told me that wasn't what he wanted. He didn't realize it had to be made from scratch. He wanted something he could just add to hot milk, so I showed him the recipe for chocolate syrup, but he didn't want to do that as that was too complicated. I told him if he wanted it the way I made it when we were kids he would have to make it from scratch each time or make a jar of chocolate syrup because that's how I made it. I ended up repossessing the can of cocoa and buying him the store bought chocolate syrup. He refused to believe it was made from scratch when we were growing up.

We live a hop skip and jump from the Hershey Factory and Park...the scent of Chocolate is constantly thru the air here...the street lights are Hershey silver wrapped kisses.. Street size of course...this is how we had hot cocoa all our lives..😍☺👍

Phyllis Stokes Yes..very nice..however it's dairy farm area ..Because of the fresh milk for the milk chocolate..and mixed with the cow scent and chocolate is well...hmmmm a acquired smell to say the least..lol!! . But the streets of Hershey Ave.smells absolutely wonderful..your mouth waters..😃
My dad used to make this for me in the Winter in Virginia. He always made the neat stuff... foods and drinks and such. My mom just made basic stuff to put on the table with very little consideration for taste, appeal or what the kids liked. But my dad made the good stuff. He also made Hobo bread, which he learned from the hobos on the train yard where he worked, and pones of cornbread. I'll have to do a video of my dad's hobo bread.

Hi Mrs. Stokes 😘Love Love Love your stories 😘. I Haven’t enjoyed a hot cocoa in a long time because I can’t have whole milk so I watched your video and made this hot cocoa with almond milk and only half of the recipe for one cup and I’m so happy I can enjoy hot cocoa again and with real cocoa not the packet stuff. 😊 Thank you.

What a great idea using almond milk, I'm going to use almond milk next time.
Oh, Phyllis you took me right back to my childhood. By the time of Junior high, we were taking thermoses of hot cocoa to the football games. Everybody loved my mother's recipe cause it was just what you made.
Thank you for this delicious recipe. I live in New England and this will be made often to warm me up after clearing all that snow.
When my mother was alive. She would always make cocoa. My best memories.🍀
My mom made this for us in the 60's and I always looked forward to it. Sunny is adorable. My little troublemaker (Seymour) likes to drag my son's socks and my bras out of the laundry hamper. I thought he might outgrow his mischievous antics but he's nearly 3 and it hasn't happened yet. I guess I'll just love him as he is. Haha! Merry Xmas to you all!
My mom always made hot cocoa for us to drink when we would come inside after playing in the show. We didn't get marshmallows, but it was still good. :)
memory is a wonderful thing ... like how you will always think of your sister and her "extra three" all your life whenever you see hot cocoa and marshmallows
I can remember on snow days, my mom calling us in from sledding and making hot cocoa for us. I don't know how she made it, but it looked just like that. I always liked a spoonful of vanilla ice cream in mine! Sunny looks like he's settling in just fine and Steely has his spot back for the moment anyway, LOL.
This brings back a memory of 1956 when a few of us girls went skating on a playground which the city made available for the kids to ice skate. After we were there awhile I saw my dad with a thermos filled with hot cocoa to warm us up. It IS cold up here in the Northeast now. What a great memory. Thank you.
My Nana, in St. Johns, Newfoundland, would send us a box every Christmas. There were terrific airy peppermint candies and an orange can of Fry's Cocoa. Special memory.
Hi Miss Phyllis! My mother's answer to illness was Campbell's Chicken Noodle Soup, soda crackers, and 7Up! If my dad was home, he made me potato soup with lots of onions. Little diced potatoes just tender, but still holding their shape, butter, milk and salt. I loved both soups. I made the scratch chicken rice with onions garlic and basil for my 'feel better' soup, for my kids. I was born in '55.
Sweet lady Phyllis, I love to listen your stories and your explanations. You’re really great❣️ My English knowledges are a bit limited and it’s incomplete, but every time I’m listening your stories, I’m learning new words and phrases. It’s such a joy for me, believe me😍. Sometimes I have to ask my online dictionary to understand words, but in the meantime I’m used to your vocabulary. Sweet Phyllis, thank you for your being! I love you❣️🌹
I remember this on the cold winter nights growing up in West Virginia as a young girl. Happy to see sonny is fitting in.
I make mine the same way, but instead of vanilla extract I add coconut extract. It's delicious!
This popped up in my feed, and I am so glad it did! Your mom was such a treasure, and her recipes so lovely; I go back to them often. Oh, I wish you had a cookbook!!
That’s the way my Mom made it too. I grew up in Virginia and we had plenty of cold days playing in the snow and she would make this to warm us up. This brings back such nice memories. Thanks, Phyllis! Please say “hi” to Mr Bucky. Much ❤️
Oh my goodness! What Memories. I'm the oldest of five kids I was born in 48 and I remember dad was the cocoa maker. In the mid fifties there was only 3 of us and I do believe we used to get the mini marshmallows that were in different pastel colors. But I do remember the big ones also. So it has been over 50 years since I had cocoa to drink! Nice job on the dog trim. So Sunny is a little trouble maker huh ? So I guess dogs go through something like the terrible twos? My father-in-law raised chickens. Once we were walking across the field and found one of his younger dogs eating one of the chickens. He took the chicken by its legs and beat the heck out of a dog . I said why did you do that and he said I beat him with the chicken so the dog will think the chicken beat him up and then he'll leave them alone . I had smaller inside dogs and I did not have the heart to beat them with my shoes. I worked for a veterinarian for several years after I got out of high school and I used to trim the dogs there. It was a lot of fun!
Sure is better than all these instant mixes they use nowadays.
Memories of my childhood came flooding back. My mother made a large glass pitcher of hot coco for us in the am. Homemade bread toasted, hot cereal. Oh for one day back there.
*The kind of Grandmother every child deserves*
My grandma made this for me when I was a little girl. She would make toast with butter and we would dunk it. It was amazing. I love hot chocolate today but it isn't the same as grandma's cocoa. Thank you for bringing up the wonderful memories. 🙂
My grandmother use to make me and my brothers and sister hot coco when we were young. She was a Great Depression kid. When we would go to her house she would do the same thing as you but she always added 3 RedHots candies to the final product in each cup. By the time it cooled down to sip, you could taste the sweet cinnamon flavor from the RedHots in the coco. She also used the Marshmallow Fluff from the jar. Some times she would heat the marshmallow fluff and add more vanilla flavoring.
I understand, I drag towels out too. It's super fun.
I am at least eight years older than you Phyllis and my mother made hot cocoa all the time but it was during and after World War II. Sugar was rationed then so we would never be able to use that much. The recipe that I remember basically was the same as yours but the sugar was equal to the Coco. I guess I’ve always grown up with a dislike of extra sweet things in everything. I am guessing now that this was because it was not my childhood experience to have very much sugar. I still make Coco but here in Canada the Coco is called Fry’s end it was the trade name then too. Glad to see you’re back I love your recipes and listening to you talk.
Oh yes, Phyllis, I remember making this all the time growing up (or rather mom made it, especially on snow days). No instant stuff for us!
This is the hot cocoa my Mama made for us back in the 60s and I made for my kids in the 80s and 90s. My Mama always used Carnation Condensed milk (so as not to cut into her supply of fresh milk for all us kids). And yes, just scald the milk slightly whisk in a bit of Vanilla extract as you take it off the stove, pour into mugs. Was the best on a snow day! We didn't have marshmallows but it was still a real treat.
Absolutely perfect for tonight on this snowy evening here in Vermont. Thank you so much!!

We've had snow since late October, on and off. And will probably see the last of the snow in late March to early April. Very cold today, December 21st, at 12 degrees for the high and we have about 7 inches of snow on the ground. I hope that you and Mr. Bucky and family have a very happy and blessed Christmas!

That cocoa brings back some wonderful memories!
I remember my Mother making it. We bought our milk fresh from the farm. Us kids would take empty glass gallon jars and the farmer would fill them for 50 cents each. That was the best hot cocoa I've ever had.
I miss you, Ms. Phyllis! If I had a mom/Grandma like you, I'd love to know all about the good old days as many older people have no interest in the past. The days we live in now are the worst! They've forgotten the past (young people have never even learned ) and are destroying our future...beautiful story of your sister's Marshmallows/hot chocolate memory:) I never use the junk hot chocolate they have on the shelves today!
Hi Ms Phyllis! I was standing in line at the grocery store waiting to check out when the notification of your KZread video being uploaded arrived on my phone. I took one quick look at the title and knew I needed some marshmallows to make this wonderfully delicious hot cocoa. I didn't hesitate a second to leave the checkout line to go get the marshmallows! We enjoyed the hot cocoa that same evening after supper and tonight as well. We have a cold front coming thru next week so am making another run to the store for more milk and marshmallows! I have a hunch folks at my house will be asking for this hot cocoa again. Thanks for sharing the recipe and for the video. Looks like Mr Bucky enjoyed the hot cocoa as much as we did. Good to see Sunny has recovered from his trip to the vet for his shots. Looks like he's back up to full speed! Sending y'all best wishes for a Merry Christmas and a blessed New Year!!

ADDING THE MARSHMALLOWS FIRST!!! GENIUS! !!
My Pappa made a berry pie that I have never been able to duplicate. He would approve of your pie crust and your poodles. You made me happy to remind me of him. Bet he is cooking big meals for his neighbors in Heaven. Today is his birthday. I missed him and your video made me feel like I was hanging out with him. Keep doing your thing. It makes an impact.

Love your videos. Thank you for sharing.
Looks so good!!
What fun watching you make cocoa. I still do that when I remember. Thanks Phyllis for a delightful reminder of the past.
Excellent - looks great!
This brings back some very fond memories of things back in the 50s. I haven't made this in decades, but thanks to Miss Phyllis, that's going to change today! My wife is going to love this. Thanks Phyllis!
Looks delicious 😋
Thank you Ms.Phyllis! Excellent! This is the ONLY way I make cocoa..I NEVER buy that sugary mess they sell in the stores! And besides, you can control the amount of sweetness you or your guests like.... Your cups of cocoa looks so inviting and delicious!☕ And a splash of pure vanilla , extra chocolate chips, marshmallows and or whipped cream pushes it over the top! I sometimes add a little peppermint extract to my pot..now, the only thing missing is the cracklin' fireplace! 🤗
I remember my Mama making this for me in the 1950's. It was so good!
Love your stories and recipes❤ your my favorite I love to watch❤
I love your countertops
Yes!!! I'm going to make this now, we just got 7" of snow. Back when mom made this it felt like a warm hug😊 thank you Phyllis

We have learned to play with him a lot outside during the day so he gets to use up some of his bottled up energy. This has definitely helped with the rowdiness. He's still a bundle of energy when he wakes up in the mornings.

Delicious!! Loved this video!! Thanks Ms. Phyllis!! ☕️🍫
I have never seen hot cocoa made like this before and I got so excited when I saw the vanilla extract! Thank you so much for posting this Ms Phyllis 👍💜
Ok going to make for my grands. Looks delicious
You both are so wonderful.
Same recipe I use, so yummy!
This is the sweetest story of hot cocoa! I really need to make some now.
I made homemade marshmallows last week after that huge snowstorm we had in western NC....they are so yummy....much better than store bought and they were so easy to make...especially if you have a kitchen aide mixer....Laurie

I'm sure the home made marshmallows are much better than those purchased in the grocery store. Those purchased today also have a preservative in them.
For the life of me, why would anyone dislike this video? I loved it. Reminded me of my Mom making this for my sister and me. Today would have been her birthday. 👍
Thank you so much, Phyllis!! Another great recipe ❤️
Lovely. I first had it at boarding school when I was 8 in 1950. Us little ones - 6 of us- would go into the kitchen at 7pm and have our cups, dished up out of a huge pot ready for 100 girls. Then to bed. In NZ I still have cocoa but you can buy tins of hot chocolate
Brings back so many good memories!. Thank you for the little history lesson. Merry Christmas ! and a blessed new year!
Oooooh that sounds Yummy! I believe I will make some tomorrow.
I love the things we made in home ec. So good!
Wow! This hot cocoa recipe video just brought me back to when I was a kid......no instant coca packets back then for me either....I may just have to make this next week...in the 50's here now, but dropping to the 30's next week.....I always floated marshmallows in my cocoa to! Phyllis, your one awesome lady! You always make me smile, no matter what kind of day I had!
I absolutely love your videos! I love going back in time with you and learning how to incorporate these 50s recipes in my daily meal prep! Keep them coming, Happy New Year!
