1948 Studebaker Future Car Build
Andrew from New Zealand has been at the shop for 3 weeks and has been working on the 1948 Studebaker Future Car designed by Virgil Exner. Andrew worked on the front nose section using aluminum. He made 4 panels and then TIG welded the section together. When he finished welding, he planished the weld using a slapper and dolly.

Great work, Andrew and good luck using these skills with what you move into. Quality work on a beautiful design.
Go the Kiwi :-). And hello from New Zealand
Wow, that is such an amazing looking car!
Great job, it’s going to be incredible
Excellent craftsmanship.
That is a wonderful story. I wish him well. While he’s gone his brain will be working and this ain’t over yet.

We have completely different styles of shaping. I am not a tradionalist at all, any chance I get to innovate I take that road. I teach a super simple less tool method, that yields results with absolute beginners like they have been professionals for years. I get ignored by a lot of the professional shapers.
Fantastic work as usual, Wray. I'd love to see how you made that copper cone.
Really busy beats the hell out of the alternative!
Glad to see you back and doing ok
That's a work of art!
Thanks for the video Wray
impressive workmanship, congratulations to all who contributed to the work at hand.
Terrific project for your students to learn on and for us to watch
What an awesome project. Amazing to see how quickly many of your students pick it up
Greetings from the UK totally amazing work as always from your students and of course you too Wray ❤
This is SUPER COOL! I love looking at concept vehicles and trying to see how they could be built today because those cars were always mor3 cool than production. Making dreams come true at Pro Shaper! Waiting for the update on the Trans Am.
So glad to see a new video up been waiting for a while .Nice work Andrew & the other Canadian.
Although I did recognize that picture of the concept Studebaker and also knew of Virgil from the 50s Mopars I wasn't aware of his earlier work or that he did that Stude. Really cool project!
Excellent job.👍🇨🇦
Great Work for ALL. I Would Love your class. I have a year & Half till I Retire. Maybe then. ? #STAYSAFE #PHILLYPHILLY 🇺🇸
HooRay, Ray's Back! 👍👍
Put a Boeing 502 in that and make it a jet car
That's going to be so cool. I love the designs from the Loewy run studio at Studebaker. It also reminds me of some of Alex Tremulus's Tucker concepts and also Buehrig's Tasco designs. Post war aero influences before rockets took over.

Lowery, just took credit for what Virgil and the other Studebaker designers had created....

@@proshaper Yes, just like most design chiefs. It is the design chief that sells the design to management. The 53 Studebaker known originally as the Loewy coupe is now commonly known as the Bob Burke coupe. Exner gets the credit for all the Chrysler Forward look cars and I'm sure there were others slaving away. It's rare that the actual designers actually get credit and many are team efforts.
I liked Exner's Norseman. At least we know that one could steer the front wheels. I guess in the future, people drive in a straight line.

It is all corrected. The drawing was probably done very quickly as a concept, not an engineering drawing.

@@proshaper Aside from my joke, wheels do throw off the aesthetics sometimes.
Hey Wray, make the front fenders turn w/ the wheels. I used Autodesk 123D Make to do slice station for a 356 Speedster wire frame buck. I just started on it for the fun of it beginning w/ wheelwell openings. A dude shared his awesome 3D file to work from.

Didn't they try that on the original Tucker design but found at speed it would make the car unstable as the air would throw the car all over the place when turning ?

@@BeatenRustBuckets I think the only thing that turned with the wheels was the center headlight but I don't know about any prototypes. Interesting question. However, the fenders will need to be widened substantially to accommodate steering. Look at the pontoon front fenders on a Lotus 11 as an example.

In Virgil's drawing the front fenders are fixed, I corrected that, they do turn with the wheels.

@@butziporsche8646 You are correct, I was speaking of the early development of the Tucker not production. Good point on the Lotus, that all being said its not like this will be going over 75 so perhaps my original point is moot.

@@proshaper That should be exciting. The chassis design will be interesting in itself.
Busy is a good thing ,, too busy is not so great some days. Is this body made to fit an existing chassis and suspension set up , or will you make something to fit it afterwards ,,, or will it only ever be a body.
