Wow.. road travel before the days of Interstate highways, before suburban sprawl. Beautiful film, that’s for sure

I was blessed as a child to go on three different coast-to-coast car trips in the '50's. Route 66 in all its glory. Strapping a water bag to the grill for the desert legs of the journey. Motels, swimming pools and pancakes for breakfast. Burma Shave signs...

The young woman is beautiful and immaculately dressed at every turn. Amazing she had room in her suitcase for all those outfits. Loved the era of the hood ornaments as well.

One of the best quality videos I’ve seen of the past! I always wonder about the people in the film, they have no idea ppl from 2023 are literally watching this and probably had no intentions that it would

The filmer obviously knew what he was doing, the colors are so vivid and the contrast just about perfect.

This really takes you back in time!!! I loved going on this road trip with this awesome, fun, friendly family!!! I played 1940’s big band music as I watch it. I ate a greasy hamburger and fries and had a coke in a glass bottle!!! The photography is absolutely beautiful!!! I loved seeing the many national parks!!! I thoroughly enjoyed it!!! It’s like watching a very good family friendly movie!!! One hour and twelve minutes of pure enjoyment!!! Thank you soooo much for sharing your family home movies!!! May our Lord Jesus richly bless you!!! I look forward to meeting all of you in heaven!!! ❤️

I think this is a wonderful vintage video andI I believe not your average Joe can afford to take this wonderful trip. My thoughts are, this was a wealthy family and a family who really loved and enjoyed each other. I hope the grand kids get to see this clip and how grandpa and grandma making this a true vacation for the kids. Thanks for sharing.

Doubtful you’ll find a better quality 1947 home movie. Fantastic color and resolution for that time and skilled videography. This travelogue is just a great piece of Americana! One (of many) takeaways for me is that the first few freight trains are pulled by steam engines, which were just a few years away from near complete extinction. The last two seen are diesels. Also, I discovered many of the landmarks and buildings still exist in 2024. In pre-Interstate highway America, I suppose it was easier to stop and smell the roses. Old cars, happy family, pretty scenery and, apparently, young love. Ended up wishing this vid was twice as long.

What a treasure. Gorgeous color photography from what seems like a golden time - at least for a prosperous Midwestern family of 1947. Much of the scenery is just staggering - The Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, Laguna Beach and Carmel. The young dark-haired woman - I assume the daughter - was pretty enough to be a young model or starlet of the period, and her brother (again, I assume) was also good-looking. Fascinating to see the old Saltair Pavilion near Salt Lake City. Wonder what happened with that banged-up car? Thank you & the family for sharing this.

Trip starts off with a grey Desoto and ends up with a dark blue Desoto. No sense in letting a car accident ruin your trip. This family is obviously better off than most from this era.

At 11:13 is great footage of Saltair II, (the big Moorish Pavilion on the Great Salt Lake). It was used in the filming of the classic horror movie Carnival of Souls, (1962). There were 3 Saltairs. The first two burned down. #1 1890's -1925. #2 1930's-1970 #3 1981- present.

Very good transfer. This family obviously could afford 16mm camera and film, not cheap in those days but much better quality then 8mm. Better yet they knew how to use it. LIttle to no shake or fast panning many people tend to do. Its fun watching film from that period .. the younger folks are now in their 80's. Watching the cars and the various towns they go through. I did a trip 15-20 years ago in the reverse from WA state to Mt Rushmore and similar stops. I recognized some of the places from my trip. Very nostaligic...

The son, James had quite a career. He got his engineering degree from MIT and went on to make inventions, worked for Hewlett Packard and some other companies, did biomedical engineering and even did work with the Stanford linear accelerator He was born in 1930 in Cincinatti and his parents appear to have been from Massachusetts. James passed away some years ago in California. You can tell that the father had a love for nature, technology and engineering. Also, the shot of James checking out the cable section of the Golden Gate Bridge belied his interest in such things as well. Apparently his sister's name was/is Lea.

A very nice, nostalgic, early post WWII, road trip and yes, good job with the filming. Love the period cars, roads, stops along the way such as Yellowstone National Park and especially the people. By the way, I have that exact, embossed Nebraska U.S. 30 sign hanging in my garage as seen at 2:03. Thanks so much for sharing!

This is an amazing video. I even saved this to one of my playlists to find it again. It's really nice to see how life was in the 1940s, just 1 or 2 years after World War 2 had ended. This video is also in excellent quality- full colour and well filmed! I also love the variation and the fact it's over an hour long. Thank you for sharing (I know this was uploaded 2 years ago)!

This was when the United States was such a pleasure to traverse. Try doing that same drive today, the interstate has made driving a lot more easier and direct. However, the whole drive looks the same. It used to be you knew you were in the Midwest, or the Deep South by the different food, the unique architecture etc…..the whole country just looks the same with chain restaurants and monotonous box stores dotting the landscape.😮

This is really lovely!- on long road trips (short too) my dad would •never• stop to see interesting things along the highway. But such fun to swim in motel pools and make friends with other kids traveling. Good memories. Thanks for posting this moment in time. Blessings.

I wonder how Llyswen Franks is related to the family that we see in the video. Everytime I watch vintage home movies or footage such as this i find myself so curious about who the people were. What were they like, where did they end up in life, etc. It's so curious to me.

Thanks, I was wondering what the year of that DeSoto was. That was back in the time when a lot of cars didn't have an engine, oil filter and consequently you changed your oil every 2000 miles or sooner.

It's at least 2 films spliced together. At 2:38 they are at Summit Tavern in Wyoming. Then they are back in North Platte, Nebraska. At 6:34 they are again back at Summit Tavern. Maybe they forgot something and went back home?

No. The vast majority of home movies from this era are silent. The cameras available simply had no facility for recording sound.
