1945: What Happened At The End Of WWII? | The Year That Changed The World | Timeline

The series’ narrative thread is an examination of the power struggle over who will win the peace. The fight takes place between the big three wartime allies: The Soviet Union, Britain and America. Each country and leader is embedded in each programme as central characters; we become familiar with their approach and their particular cocktail of double-dealing.
The five programmes follow a chronological order which enable us to track the shifting fortunes of the big three as a new world order is established. At the start of 1945 the Allies know that the war will be over - it is a matter of time - so while the actual military victory still has to be won the real intrigue takes place behind the scenes as World rule for the next 50 years is thrashed out.
So while the first two programmes deal with the military campaign in Europe and the Pacific this is set against the political infighting among the big three allies to cast the post war world in their own separate images. The outcome of these negotiations was to define the way we live around the globe for the next half a century.

The hypocrisy of the Russians at Kiev is astounding in its arrogance. Stalin had tens of thousands of political prisoners massacred at the start of Operation Barbarossa. The NKVD carried out many executions of Russians soldiers, so for them to be so upset by what the Germans did is disingenuous. What the Germans did was reprehensible but the Russians did the same thing. Stalin's gulags and work camps murdered umpteen thousands of prisoners, during his dictatorship it is estimated to have been as much as the 20 million Soviets killed and murdered during WW2.

Many historians, like Hastings, saying that, what happened in Dresden was not right, failed to realize that the Germans( military and civilians alike) got a taste of their own medicine. The atrocities, like those in the concentration camps, were a good example of why the Germans deserve the punishment inflicted on them, and then they got a visit from the mighty Red Army... War is brutal but that just how it is

Many historians leave out the fact that the communists starved to death 10s of millions of civilians after the war had ended. War isn't about subjugating people. It's about acquiring more land and resources for your people to grow and prosper. Like killing all of the buffaloes so that the ranchers could run cattle. Like round up the natives and placing them on reservations so that the settlers could develop the land.
