Everyone underestimated Truman at the beginning. They saw him as a small town hick, a country bumpkin not realizing he had been a head County Judge for more than a decade before he went to Congress. Non-Americans don't realize how pragmatic and what a good judge of characters so many mid=westerners are. And Truman was as plain spoken as they come, always unafraid to tell it like it is. He didn't put up with BS and would cut to the chase which threw other leaders off their game being used to the polished diplomatic people they usually dealt with. Harry and Stalin were very alike in that they both were keen observers of personalities and listened carefully for what was not said.

I agree with your comment! The writer of this documentary seems to portray him as a man of low IQ, because he was a hat salesman, and did not graduate from an Ivy League college. That is a wrong assessment of him. I think he was smarter, and more astute than he is given credit for.

very good documentary showing day by day step by step how the Yalta conference proceeded. Indeed, both Roosevelt and Churchill were incredibly naive to trust Stalin. The Brits and American spies failed miserably in portraying the wolf under sheep's clothing and his long-term ambitions. I find it laughable that even the gardens and plants were bugged by the Soviets. In the film, The Death of Stalin, Stalin's close cohorts were sharp enough to hold secret meetings inside their cars and not in the open. Thank you for an extremely well-done documentary.

Западная пропаганда не обошла этот фильм. Есть моменты правды и лжи. Но человек,хорошо знающий историю, сможет сделать выводы. Я бы назвала фильм "стратегические ошибки Гарри Трумэна". Советский союз был действительно партнёром, но недоверие запада привело к "холодной войне". Советский союз не мог в ней победить, слишком много сил было потрачено в войне с Гитлером. К тому же, после смерти Сталина, разведка запада активно внедрялась в СССР. Удар атомным оружием по Японии не был необходимостью, особенно после победы союза. А слухи о том, что Гитлер делает бомбу, были ложью. Испытание атомной бомбы-это была демонстрация силы. Именно от этого пошла трещина в отношениях союза и запада. Советский союз был вынужден сделать атомную бомбу. К тому же разведка донесла,что после Японии, СССР были бы следующие. Бомбу на западе делали в тайне от союза. Если бы ее делали не против него, то пригласили бы наших инженеров и делали бы ее вместе с союзником. Но пока СССР на исходе сил сражались с Гитлером, бомбу делали против союза, тщательно это скрывая и говоря,что якобы хотят опередить Гитлера. Сталин знал,что Гитлер не делал бомбу и все понял, к тому же его разведка подтвердила. А использовать фашистов в своей разведке это была тотальная ошибка запада, за которую и пой сей день расплачивается весь мир. Так называемые многочисленные советники Трумэна обвели его вокруг пальца. Когда он это понял, было слишком поздно. Много чего можно ещё узнать интересного. Все герои фильма не были святыми. Но остановлюсь. Люди должны сами анализировать и не верить слепой пропаганде.

Not to speak of Dresden, Hiroshima and Nagasaky. The worst war crimes ever committed in history. That is why most Germans do more or less believe in Russians, they fought on battlefields between Stalingrad and Berlin. The 'boys' came much too late to be really helpful to fight civilians in the basements of their houses. Shame on them ! Nice of you to tell me some Hollywood history, but I don't believe it. Now make a story of Monte Cassino, where the liberators bombed monks and blasted the ancient monastery without there being a single enemy soldier inside. You are a good patriot and apologyst - but a very bad historian.

Mr, Churchill was VERY popular in the US during and after WW2. When Truman took over as President, he kept up the close bond between the US and Great Briton. I don't know how much of Mr. Churchill's popularity was because his mother was an American, or the fact that he received a VERY warm reception when he visited Truman's home town and spoke of the IRON Curtain that had descended upon Europe when the war was over. We were all shocked in the US when Mr Churchill was not retained as Prime Minister at the end of WW2.

Why are all the documents presented not being read aloud by the narration? The first two were close to verbatim with a liberty or two taken but then Truman's is not at all what's on screen.

Good show but the subtitles are even better.

Insulting. Insinuating that Truman was not an intelligent man is shameful. He might not have been a “Politician” all his life but he wasn’t dumb by any means. He owned a business. he was a judge. He was a pianist. He was a soldier in WW1. He became a senator. Then picked for VP. The man was self made through and through. Say what u will but he WAS intelligent. He did a hell of a job!

Coincido, deberían poner un traductor , bueno también molesta un poco la traductora española al referirse a Truman como un simple vendedor de corbatas

Este documental afirma porque putin tiene que que mantenerse firme y no ceder un tantito como digera el Che ,no deberian olvidar el 1945

Sorprende las reiteradas repeticiones de la traductora española con respecto al presidente del país del tío Sam, "vendedor de corbatas de Missouri"

Es un relato histórico y como tal sorprende que alguien que no era de procedencia política tuviera un papel tan decisivo y con decisiones importantes en situaciones límites... Por eso la reafirmación sobre que era un vendedor de corbatas. Está muy bien narrado el documental y además con aportes de familiares e historiadores importantes.

Some of the facts are incorrect/misleading. FDR didn't choose Truman. Truman was forced on the ballot to replace Wallace by Blue Dog Democrats at the convention. FDR was in too bad health to put up an argument. The US never told Russia that they plan to use the atomic bomb. Learning after the fact angered Stalin. Also, it's always been debatable if the bomb was needed as the US had Japan on the fence.

it was a show of power towards the Soviet Union more than it was necessary to defeat Japan. It was used to tell Stalin, who is the leading global power.

Staline was informed about the bomb at the Potsdam conference (even if most likely he was already aware of it thanks to his spy network inside the project). I agree, it is still a debate right now to determine whether the bomb or the soviet declaration of war (or the combination of the two) pushed the most Japan to surrender.
