1940's Singer 143W2 Industrial Zig Zag Sewing Machine - Repair - Part 1

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I was given this 1940's Singer 143W2 Industrial sewing machine by the good guys at the Motueka MenzShed.
It's a little rusty but seems to be in reasonably complete condition. There's no table or motor but I'm sure I can get the machine head into sewing condition to fully test later when I find a table and motor.
This video shows off the machine head and I remove easy to remove parts and place them in a rust removing solution to see how they come out.

Utterly fascinating to see engineering explained in detail. The age of the machine and how it still functions is incredible. Hope you get it cleaned and hooked up to a motor, would love to see it sew again 🪡🧵✂️😍 And thank you so much for imparting you're knowledge, I can't find any English sewing machine technician to pass on their experience to me.. Mostly because I'm a woman that sews.

Flat plastic containers with snap on lids work well for the Evaporust and allow big flat parts to soak. You can then store the Evaporust in them and the crud and dirt settles to the bottom and is an easy clean out.

Hello, have you found a solution for the left-right play in the needle bar? Same thing happened to my singer 31-32 and domestic zig-zag so i'm looking for solutions.

I have this machine. It runs pretty well but I keep breaking thread. Any ideas on what may be the problem? Timing looks good, needle height looks good, I am missing one little thread hold back near the tension knob but I think it's happening near the bobbin

This was a rare Singer model. Thanks. Bobbin case looks like Featherweight type?

I was thinking the same thing about the bobbin case and the hook also looks similar to a Featherweight one except the shaft area is different. Thanks.

That top plate has a beautiful bluing. Won't Evaporust damage that bluing? I probably would have just scuffed off the superficial rust from the top side of that plate, especially seeing as it doesn't fit in your jar.

Evaporust had no affect on the bluing. I put the top plate end on in the jar so I could easily compare the affected area with the non affected area. I intend on putting the plate in a larger container with evaporust.

@@InStitchesinteresting. I thought bluing was effectively a form of iron oxide. There may be a thin layer of varnish on top? What do you think, as you look at it with your own eyes and other senses?

There's no varnish and the plate is in a fairly bad state. I'll get some close up shots of it for you in the next episode. Thanks. @@GianmarioScotti
