Ford Motor Company introduced its De Luxe Ford line in 1938 as an upscale alternative to bridge the gap between its base model (usually called Standard)[2] and luxury Lincoln offerings. The "Deluxe" name was first used starting in 1930 to specify an upscale trim starting with the Model 40-B and Model 45-B, then later the De Luxe Ford line was differentiated as a separate "marque within a marque" with separate styling and pricing through 1940.[3] During 1939, Ford had five lines of cars: Ford, De Luxe Ford, Mercury, Lincoln-Zephyr, and Lincoln. After the war, this was simplified to Ford, Mercury, and Lincoln. The 1941 Ford line included "De Luxe" and "Super De Luxe" trim, but these vehicles were not marketed as a separate line. As Mercury Eight sales progressed, the De Luxe approach was cancelled.
This marketing approach was in response from the different General Motors brands, (Cadillac, Buick, Oldsmobile, Pontiac, and Chevrolet), and the Chrysler brands, (Chrysler, DeSoto, Dodge, and Plymouth).
The De Luxe Fords of 1938 featured a more sloping hood and ornamental heart-shaped grille. This look was passed on to the standard line for 1939, as the De Luxe Fords gained sharp v-shaped grilles with vertical bars. The standard line once again inherited the De Luxe look for 1940, this time with body-colored vertical bars. The 1940 De Luxe Ford featured a three-part grille with horizontal bars.
The Ford's look was again modernized for 1939 - the Deluxe used a low pointed grille with heavier vertical slats, while the standard Ford had a higher grille with horizontal dividers. The headlights (the example illustrated has been converted to '40 Ford sealed beam headlamps - '39s used bulb and reflector lamps, the last year for them) were moved farther apart, sitting almost in front of the wheels. The side grilles and louvers were removed in favor of chrome strips on Deluxe models. The "alligator" hood opened deep from the top of the grille back, eliminating the side panels found on previous models.
Mechanically, Ford put hydraulic brakes on their cars for the very first time.[7][8]
The phaeton, club coupe, and convertible club coupe models were discontinued. The engine was also revised for 1939 with downdraft carburetors widening the torque band but leaving power unchanged at 85 hp (63 kW). Hydraulic brakes were a major advance across the Ford line.
Ford's upscale Mercury line also made its debut in 1939, filling the gap between the Deluxe Fords and the Lincoln-Zephyr line.

Henry Ford's heritage traces back to King Henry VIII - the Tudor king. There were bridge builders and water crossing makers that Henry used during war. Those folks were called "forders". King Henry had a favorite fording group and awrded them a Tudor Peerage giving them them the family name of Ford. Henry Ford also built cars in England. As a celebration of his family heritage, he named several car designs "Tudor" - this is one of them. True story. Chris, I loved your choices on this build - thanks for sharing.

another good build-- if I remember correctly the spare running board was part of a double kit called "diamond in the rough"--never bought the kit but it contains(if I remember correctly) this kit with a different fender assembly with the right front and running board removed it also consisted of the 53 ford pickup and the four wheel utility trailer(oops thats the car hauler trailer)

Wow, just lovely results! Thanks for blazing a trail. I would buy two kits for a simultaneous build, one of a 1939 model, the other of a 1940 version; showroom new, stock, original parts and paint. I do not know what the actual body colour options would be (I would not risk a close bungle); black can be good, though I would like a bit of variety.

I don't normally build cars from this era but I did build the Sedan Delivery version of this kit many years ago and loved it. I love all the custom options available in this particular release and I'm sure that second engine will come in handy for another build or even for display purposes, like putting it in the bed of a pickup.
