I read somewhere decades ago that SS stood for "Swallow Sidecars" which was a coachbuilding company. (Later SS Cars) In the early days they rebodied little Austin's and Standard's with sports car style looks, also souping-up the engines. (Standard went on to become Triumph) A brilliant engineer Wm Heynes designed two of their longest lasting marvels: the XK engine series and the rear suspension.
So heartwarming. No matter how wealthy, and famous a celebrity you are, when you see someone that you think might be broken down or stuck, asking them if they're ok... Nice one Jay. You really are a true gentleman.
Jay Leno asking that Camaro owner if he's stuck at 16.50, how cool is that. What a class guy Mr. Leno is. Best channel on KZread.

Jay’s certainly the best car youtuber
I worked for a number of years as a technician in a car restoration company here in Europe. I had the opportunity to do some work on an original SS100. Of course I had to 'test drive' it a couple of times. Let me tell you being on the open road alone in a SS100 is one of the most satisfying motoring experiences you can ever have. Thanks for the vid Jay, it brought back some happy memories.

I read the comment what you say. Can you tell me The 1939 S style and 1937 SS is it one S or 2 SS? Because the person is selling say is 1939 S style. I like the classic look so I just wanna make sure which is better year. Of course is replica automatic. Appreciate it..if you get back to me I have very little knowledge on this car. Thank you
Suffolk R.I.P - 1995-2020 - unfortunately the company producing the parts for this replica has been forced into liquidation by Jaguar. As mentioned in this Video the production of the the parts for this replica where so good and so accurate, that even restorators bought these parts to restore original cars. I understand Jaguar has an interest in protecting their intellectual property. However what i don't understand is that there was no possibility to get to terms with licensing. This was a fun car, bought mostly by Jag-Enthusiasts. In no case this had any impact on any sales by Jaguar - if not even promoted the Marque to people seeing these cars on the road. The original SS100 are so rare you never ever get any chance seeing one. In any way I think Jaguar destroying this company did nothing good for the community and nothing good for their own brand and nothing good to all the restorations pending out there. So for a legal cause it has produced nothing but loosers. A shame!
Holy cow... my dad successfully built a SS100 replica with a VW chassis back in the mid 90s and he tried so hard to keep it after falling through tough times... I'll never forget the moment when he sold it. It was cream white and brown with a velvety red quilted interior. Maybe I'll see it again someday. I still have the Jaguar hood ornament for it.
let's not forget jay the real ss100 is far beyond the price range of most mortals. this suffolk is a reasonable option.

Ecosse57 an SS 100 sold for $15million not too long ago.
Jay, you do not know how much I and my wife enjoyed this video. In 1957, I purchased a 1956 MGA from the dealer that was in La Jolla, CA and used it while stationed at March AFB in Riverside. In 1959, I was reassigned to England by the Air Force and of course felt that I needed a car so I went on a search. I finally was able to find a 1934 SS I which I purchased for 100 pounds ($280.00 at the time). I drove it for much of the rest of my time in the UK until it finally died. Sadly, as an enlisted man, the budget didn't allow for repairs nor restoration and I was forced to abandon it. I have never missed a car so much.
Taking into consideration of Jays MOSTLY correct comment about fiberglass kit cars, there are however exceptions to that rule! .... This BODY IS ALSO A COPY of a 1937 Jaguar SS100 and is 95% Fiberglass and very Correct......... The Exception is, having the right fiberglass master tech to make the molds and parts and knowing what resins to use and how to massage the fiberglass (now a lost art) into a non aggressive cure time and temps..... This December with be my 40th year in the art of CORRECT fiberglass. This SS100 Jag body panel MOLDS were made by a many year Master Tech. VERY nice car!
When (at 16:35) Jay Leno offers you assistance fixing your Camaro on the side of the road, you should ALWAYS accept, lol.
I love how Jay offered a hand to the guy with the hood up! True motoring spirit! What a car guy! :)
Back in the 1970's, a small firm in the UK, Panther Westwind, built (out of aluminim not fiberglass) the J72 using a then new XJ-6 engine . The proportions were similar to the SS 100 and it drives like a classic sportscar with balls. Stock performance was 0-60 in about 6.5 sec. I had the opportunity to drive one for a week to the Lime Rock Vintage Festival and loved every mile of it. The owner's father had been the importer for the USA and has kept it in his memory, A replica, yes. Perfect, no but a delight to experience.
I wish you'd start including the startup and warmup procedures again, it's great to see it all up to temp and going down the road, but something about all the various steps in starting some of these old cars would be great to see.
I lived in Sierra Vista Az in 1964. A sleepy little town of 3500 (not anymore.....). 12 miles to Tombstone and next to Ft Huachuca. At the officers quarters were 2 SS100 Jags. I used to go to the gym on base. I would walk out of my way to look at these cars. Sidebar: In 1964 I was blessed with my first 2 drives; At the Ascot parking lot. That was very popular then. In 1966 laws were passed making that illegal. My first drive at Ascot was a 1963 AC Aceca and then a 1948 MGTC. Then my dad bought an MGA. Those were nice times.
Just two guys going for a cruise, talking about random car stuff, I love it. And it's a great car, originals are always more interesting, but I think I'd rather drive this one.
13:22 I always pay attention when Jay talks about mechanical things...he is correct, it does not sound like a wheel bearing at all and it isn't. He is most likely correct about the chirping sound being a bushing or something similar. I sometimes see comments here that try to suggest that Jay doesn't truly know his stuff, nothing could be further from the truth. Jay is the real deal and knows machines, make no mistake about it. Oh yeah, nice replica Jag too.
I was surprized you didn't mention that SS was derived from Swallow Sidecar. I got to build a dashboard for an SS100 retoration in '73. It won a first at an SSCA outing it's first time shown. Thew aluminum body was almost all new - done be a fella that had apprenticed at Aston-Martin. I also got to work on an SS100 as well - although it was not a restoration job.
lol the "Nazi dust up." Now that's a hell of a euphemism.

SS stood for Swallow Sidecar a company Sir William Lyons originally setup with a friend William Walmsley in Blackpool, Lancashire in 1921. Jay is such a genuine guy too checking if the guy by the side of the road in the mountains needs a hand. Reminds me of motoring when I first started to drive in the mid 80’s before mobile phones you’d always stop if someone had broken down ‘The Code of the Road’ give them a push or take them to a petrol station etc.
Around 2000, one of my wife's clients, an architect, had an original, genuine SS100. He referred to it as his retirement fund and had been offered $750K for it. I helped him out with some computer stuff and he took me for a drive for a couple of hours. Beautiful car, but primitive. Going round slow speed corners, the chassis and the drive train could wind up and do kangaroo hops. Driving down the road behind those big headlights was a special feeling.
Nice replica... always liked the Panther J72 with aluminium body built by Robert Jackel, He said he built the car to drive how the owners imagined their original Jaguar SS drove! now they are 40 odd years old.
It is such a great grand touring car that Mrs. Appleyard (born Lyons) toured the "Coupe des Alpes 1947" with it and finished it without problem.
The SS Jag was a great looking car. When you look at the Harley Earl's Buick Y Job built a year later one can see why it (the Buick) was deemed so revolutionary.
Made to spec, Jaguar drivetrain and running gear and in my opinion definitely NOT a lump. Very nice.

Jay has a soft spot for Jags, and this particular one is a beauty !
another classic moment from caring car guy Mr Leno. " are you stuck? " "no" "okay". . . good stuff Jay, good stuff.
That would be amazing with the XJR-6 AJ16SC motor and manual box, 322bhp it would be an absolute monster.

Thanks Jay and Jason for a great video. The SS100 would be my favourite sports car of all time. Lovely to see one recreated with newer Jag running gear. Absolutely beautiful. Do want!!
Has always been my favorite car, could never afford one but I did manage to get a 1952 MG-TD the closest thing, like a baby version of the SS
What an incredible job.
My brother-in-law worked at a motorcycle dealer in the 70s, the triumphs would get shipped in a crate, and he would assemble them, he said there would be oil in the bottom of the crate under the motor.
I love the the new format of driving while talking about the car.
I would love to know Jays opinion of the Eagle Speedster.
I have to echo everyone's comments re asking that driver if he was ok. How many other big stars would do that? Top Man Jay!
10:36 I always love it when they take it for a spin
In around 1972, my dad and I went to the Cypress Gardens car show. I had just gotten into British sports cars and owned a 1966 Austin Healey 3000. At the show, in the car corral, was an SS100. Asking price $5000. I was in college and did not have the money but I told my dad to buy the car. He was not a car guy. He said, "Why?". Because it is below market value and will be worth a fortune one day. Needles to say, He did not buy it and it's worth a fortune today.
Excellent, The clock appears to be a "pocket watch" in a bracket to mount it! I love it!
Name of Jay's new show: "It Pulls Very Nicely" haha
love how the front end lifts up just a little when accelerating.
thumbs up Jay Leno what a boss for asking the chev camaro owner if he needs help
I love that Jay says this is the perfect car for the non mechanically inclined because everything is new, yet it has the drivetrain of an 80's sedan. I suppose that's relatively new when compared to the original design of the car but it's still about 35 years old and that's a long time ago in automotive years. The donor car would have been able to have a "historical vehicle" registration for an entire decade before this project even started haha
I believe the 3,5 Litre Engine was rated by factory with 125 brake hp, according to the book of Michel Cognet.
I was waiting at the end for a good laugh with you getting out of the car,lol

I just love what real craftsmanship can do ! Brilliant!
Amazing vehicle... A beautiful classic...
The "British Army tank" was the Combat Vehicle Reconnaissance (Tracked)/CVRT, most commonly known as the FV101 Scorpion light tank (there were a whole family of vehicles sharing the main chassis/body), manufactured by Alvis of Coventry. Ran the Jaguar 4.2 and holds the record for fastest production tank.
brand new car + almost modern drivetrain + 1930's golden era looks = motoring heaven !
What a beauty. Always fun to learn about earlier cars that I played with models as a kid but were mostly gone when I was starting to drive
Jay touched a little bit on the SS history of Jaguar. Before the war, the "SS" signified Swallow Sidecar, because the predecessor to Jaguar began by building some very classy sidecars for motorcycles. Times were hard in England, as in most of the rest of Europe and the US right after the Depression, and motorcycles far outnumbered cars for the working folks. Swallow Sidecars was founded in 1922 by William Walmsley and William Lyons with a little financial assistance from their fathers. Their first venture into cars was by building custom bodies for the Austin Seven chassis in 1927. Their value for the money carried on through the XKE that was introduced at the Geneva Auto Show in 1961, for ~$4,000 with performance that stood up very well against Ferrari's 250 Berlinettas and GTOs that were running about $18,000 at that time!!
Such a beautifully done car.
Another great episode Jay! Gorgeous motor. This is one of the reasons why i love owning a British motor.
We wants it, Precious! That is a car that would be a sheer pleasure to drive. EDIT: Needs a WWI-surplus "Supercharger to make it truly awesome.
Very informative as usual, especially the part about squirting oil under the engine to make a replica appear authentic. For future videos please address some other useful topics such as, "Turning Back Odometers", "Creating Your Own Title Documents", and "The Art of Concealing Rust by Application of Bondo". Thanks!
Jay is a really likeable and down to earth car enthusiast apart from being highly knowledgeable.
God that sound that you only get from that era
Firstly, thanks a million for sharing Jay! I have no hate on a mixture of modern Independent Jag suspension parts an fibreglass and aluminum. Secondly, as a Panther J72 V12 lover, I gotta say, a non replicar of any type Jaguar SS100 is not Constrained by cabin size, steering wheel position and tire size. About 12 V12 J72s were made in the UK between 1972 and 1979. The very rare four speed 5.3 liter six Weber carb Panther J72 weighed 2650 pounds, has a rose jointed live front axle and still does 14 second quarters with a 140 mph top speed. With 215 Dunlops it's still a mile above what the cars based on the SS platform were. Bob Jankel did what Jaguar couldn't do in 1972. IMHO, just mine, and nit a hoary finger waving judgemeny, is that the old verses new compromise shouldn't include 3 inch tire widths. Anyway Love the 3 inch width tires... and wire wheels! EPIC!!!!!!!
There's nothing wrong with having a replica. The original can stay in a museum.
Love that bug catchin chrome.. Proper LED conversion
the sheer size and dimensions of this thing is amazing
Jay big fan of the show I never missed a show more retro mods like the Volvo wagon mod and Ian Callum redesigned Jaguar Mark 2.
Finch Restorations do a great SS100 Replica that even Sir Jackie Stewart admired. Finch Restorations replicas are exact replicas.
Great show Jay. Thank you
A beautiful car. I Love the F Type too. From the 30's to today, Great cars.
We poor people who can't afford not even one of the Jay Leno's luxury cars must be at least happy we're looking at his cars.
I've restored three of these cars, our most recent won it's class at pebble this year. This is a CLOSE "replica" that with a little more detail can look a lot better and more accurate. The second light set should be closer together, put a roll in the lower grille pan, the oil pressure gauge belongs in between the tach and speedo, not fuel.......etc. Yea....I'm just a nitpicky jerk but.....hell, it's what I'm paid for at work. Looks more fun to drive than a real one though.
I’m going to bought this car because of the look it’s sexy and I always want to get the classic car...well this is only I can afford. And on top of that I’m a small blogger So I can get good use on pictures. Now I even more appreciate it that Jay loved this car. Thank you.
Love to see the pre war stuff! Keep up the awesome videos!

"SS stood for Swallow Sidecar - Sir William Lyons' original company": Nope - "SS" doesn't stand for anything; the company was simply called "SS Cars Ltd" - you can see it on their certificate of incorporation when the company was registered. The Swallow Sidecar and Coachbuilding Company was a separate entity. (Not standing for anything had the advantage that people could interpret it as they chose - enthusiasts could interpret it as "Super Sports" ( a popular 20s/30s term used to imply that a car was a barely road-legal, lightly-disguised racing car, as distinct from the ordinary "sports car" based on the mundane mechanicals of humdrum everyday saloons/sedans ), and inventive car salesmen could tell the punters that it stood for "Standard Swallow" or "Standard Special" - ("SS1"s and "SS2"s were heavily based on components from the Standard Motor Company, and many were sold from Standard showrooms. The initials came in handy again some 35 years later when Jaguar converted unsold 3.4 litre D-types into road-cars and wanted a different name for them - this time the "XKSS" really was a barely road-legal, lightly-disguised racing car.....) Jay and Jason get a few things wrong - Jason really ought to know better than to claim that the SS100 used a Standard engine, and that the SS90 and SS100 took their names from their power output - if they did, then the 3.5 litre version would have been called the "SS125"..... The cars' names came from their performance - the SS90 had a side-valve Standard engine and could manage around 90 mph, but the SS100 had the company's own design of either 2.5 or 3.5 litre ohv engine - (based on the Standard side-valve straight-six, but never used in any Standard) - and managed just under 100 mph with the 2.5 and exceeded the "ton" with the 3.5 litre engine. That is already seriously fast for an affordable pre-War road car, but the works competition car - stripped, lightened, tuned, special fuel etc - was faster still: "18008" was capable of over 130 mph and lapped Brooklands at 118. Jay is under-selling the original's performance when he says the replica is much faster - the 3.5 litre SS100 actually has a 0 - 60 time of 10.4 seconds - still enough to see off plenty of moderns, and as fast as a '70s XJ6 auto. The SS100 was still a very effective rally weapon post-War ; look up the record of William Lyon's son-in-law, Ian Appleyard . There's some wonderful period b/w photos of SS distributor Tommy Wisdom rallying the "works" car pre-War, and of Appleyard's SS100s on the Alpine Rally in the late '40s, in Paul Skilleter's excellent book Jaguars in Competition.
Bloody hell that's a nice car.
Jay was hilarious on this one.
I love the concept!
Great episode, great guest!
Way better replica than Beetle based kit cars we see here in ex-Yugoslavia.
What accent does this gentleman have? I love it, it's so clean and well articulated.
loved the sounds,, reminded me of my dad's 140
Very nicely done. It seems like Jaguar is suing all the replica makers out of existence. I guess they plan on making their own continuation series cars.
13:20 (guy who actually built the car): "Maybe its a wheel bearing" - Jay (1st time behind the wheel of the car): "No it doesnt sound like a wheel bearing". Lol
Love the pocket watch clock.
Looks like there's enough shoulder room for a Guy and his Gal. Nice Car very well made
For the love of God Jay, please include the starting session of the video okay? People including myself, enjoy to hear the engine start. Thanks in advance. Cheers.
I'd like to see the factory five cars on this show at some point. Love this car, great episode.
What a beautiful machine ! Now, to work on that lottery win... :)
I had one too, 1:18 from Bburago.
COOL 1937 Jaguar SS100 Replica - Jay Leno's Garage
This is beautiful it's not original but that's point you can drive it, race it, rev it and in away you can avoid phoniness that come with high dollar sports car owners. When you can say I built this car it takes cars down to a grassroots level and people get kick out of it great video jay and keep vintage cars on the road. cheers.
I keep yelling at the screen in my mind - "Don't step in the oil!"
Great video , Great car and awesome Lads .
What a wonderful car guys, I'll have to add this one to my list.Anton.
Thats my idea of the perfect sports car, I'd love to own one. Absolutely mouth watering.
Jay...you are a legend.
The "SS" comes from the original company "Swallow Sidecars" the 100 because it was capable of doing 100mph.

Only in US! Exact replica Jay! It's in fiberglass like a Cobra Kit car
I actually kinda want one! love it
My grandma won a complete kit car in the 90s in Vegas playing wheel of fortune it’s nice still has it not on Volkswagen chassis like jay was talking about
