I can't believe this car only got a 1:44 minute video. I see it's a teeny little car but geez...
My grandpa had three Topolino when he was young (late 40s - early 50s). He also tuned the last one to reach 110Km/h (~70 mi/h). Thank you Jay!
My father had one when we lived in Trieste Italy, brings back memories. We once fit six adults and two kinds in it. When we started piling out the doorman went around to the other side to make sure people were not just walking through it!
65 mph on 13 hp? Amazing. I was waiting for Jay to open a side panel to the engine compartment, and instead he popped the nose forward, to reveal a sewing machine inside. Fiat sure loved tiny engines.

Actually, max speed was 85km/h = 53mph. It was a tough car and also a van (with a 300kg payload) was made out of it.

I've been looking forward to this review, I hope there's a longer version coming out soon.
little story; in High School, me and my best friend tore down and rebuilt his Fiat engine in 2 days. We tuned it up and cruised the boulevard:) great little car
50 miles to the gallon in 1937 and now look where we are. That's progress for you.

What are you talking about? A modern 150cc (about 13hp) in that car would easily do 80-90mpg

With its 569 cc (.6 Liter) 4 cylinder engine it sure should have got a much better mileage. I bet its 1600 lb weight had something to do with that , though. NOT a racing engine, more like a garden tractor?
I hope they do an updated (and longer) version some time. I'd like to know more history about the model along with more of this particular car.
Please redo this! This is a great car it deserves a full review!
I really enjoy Leno reviewing these old cars. For some reason, they appeal more to me than the modern cars. Maybe it is all that technology which seems to do everything nowadays. There is nothing like watching all those old mechanical parts working together, great thing when you can see how they were designed, assembled and actually see them doing their job. Awesome.
Mr Leno, firstly, THANK YOU so much for sharing your passion with us, its a joy to hear you talking so knowledgeably about your cars and bikes. I consider myself a 'novice' petrol head, but being from the UK I have never seen a lot of the cars you feature- the Dusenburgs and Muscle cars... so great to get a proper look inside and go for rides with you! I have as my only car a 1970 Fiat 500L called Sammy, which I have owned for coming up to 20 years. Living in London, the car has spent most of its life living out in the cold and rain, and now the English weather has taken its toll on poor Sammy. Add to that the amount of times Sammy gets hit when parked (the latest incident was just now as I was writing this!) and Sammy is need need of a lot of TLC. I was hoping I could persuade you to help out with the restoration of this wonderful bundle of joy as a piece for your show? Never seen you drive a 500, apart from the newbies, what do you reckon? Here's a little link to my GoFund me page (that isn't really doing welt all!) kzread.info/dash/bejne/a5ae2Laoqq-YZKw.html Cheers Jay, thanks for sharing your garage , love the show Danny
Hello Mr. Jay LENO, I love watching your videos on American cars of course, but also those on cars from other countries. But I hadn't yet seen the one concerning this magnificent little Fiat Topolino, called Simca 5 in France, in which I loved accompanying my godfather in the 1950s. What memories! I also love how you share your passion with other car enthusiasts like you. Detailed presentations on the different models of all ages. In most of your reports, I see French models like Citroën Traction and DS, Panhard, Bugatti lined up perfectly in your garage which looks magnificent to me. From France, I follow you on KZread. Take care of yourself. Warmly
Would love to see an updated video on this one.
Oh my gosh, that little Fiat is so adorable!! I'd _love_ to have one of those or at least get the chance to drive one, just for the experience. Quite impressive performance if you consider how small the engine is and when it was made.
Great grandfather had one of these when he lived in bovino Amazing car for the times
"One of the few motors where the generator is bigger than the motor..." Love that line.
I rebuilt a magneto for one of these little Fiats recently, not this exact model, but quite similar. Being in the UK I see a lot of British, German & even some American magnetos, but the Italian ones are something of a rarity. Despite its poor condition I managed to get it almost as good as new in the looks department, performance wise it should be better than new. I had to make a few new parts for it & some very intricate aluminium repairs too. Always a pleasure to work on something a little different.
Jay, would have loved to see a whole lot more on this fantastic car!
I saw one of these parked on a side street in Istanbul....I took a foto so I would remember it....great little car :)
Yeah, this car deserves MORE video time! Nice step away from the early 300bhp cars.
Eating a strawberry ice cream, and watching a fresh Jay Leno upload. Could not have been a better brake :D
I'm sure there's value in having one mint-stock, but I wonder what it'd be like with an engine from a racing bike?
I remember a lad in the 70's had a Topolino hot rod with a jag engine , still loads of leg room .
Any chance we could get a longer updated video on this little gem sometime? It may be a small car with a small video, but I think the huge personality deserves a more in-depth look! :)
WOW! i really didn't expect that interoir space.
I love it! Such a cute little car.
longer episode please..... my father always tells me about these cars and im dying to know more, he never owned one and obviously doesnt know the ins and outs of them, i would love to see more detail
muito obrigado jay
JAY... I would have liked to seen more about this car. Very cool

I have one to sale . I´m from Portugal if you pretend any information you can as. Tks
A marvel: I remember in my youth these little cars (not so little for the standard of the fifties....) Not so many of the original model but many of the later ones, without popping out lateral indicators but blinking lights.....
This cute little car motorized Italy!
Pretty little car. My friends have a Citroen 2-CV that I have ridden around in. It's a real show stopper.
Love it want one
If anyone's wondering why the description says "Fiat 500", that was actually the first version of the Fiat 500, and it was nicked "Topolino" (small mouse) because it was small in comparison to other cars and could get everywhere
in case no one realizes there are full length videos Jay Leno has an actual website...just go there are watch it.
I want one. Damn good looking micro car.
My uncle owned one and his city apartment was right at top of a very steep hill. He'd not make it up the hill in first gear, so he'd turn it at the bottom and go uphill in reverse gear, which was lower than the low gear. No problems!
I was taken for a spin round the block in a one with a Jag 6 cylinder engine it had a Jag back axle in it too .
I saw one in France, it couldn't get up the hill... But as a town car, I would love to own one.
Bravo!
Why the revew is soo shot. I just love the look of it, so cute.
Please make longer video of this car!

Would like to see more of Fiat Topolino. Like the under side. I would love to see a wood Citron coupe.
One of the many little jewel by engineer Dante Giacosa. Also called Simca 5 in France
So cool
These things made some very nice hot rod bodies back in the late 60's.
A friend of mine grew up in Eire and her father used to be able to get himself, his wife and 9 kids into one!
The video file that was uploaded had black bars above and below the visible content. You cannot change that so it will always be smaller than your screen.
Legroom?! Jay, your left knee is halfway up the dashboard! You're not fooling anyone! >.

Good one jay
Didn't the Penguin 🐧 in the original Batman, tv show, drive one of these? If not, he should have❤. Being 6'5" tall i like the leg room! Cool little car, ty Jay!
Very cool
I saw on of these for sale on my block when I lived in Italy. It needed a restore but I wanted it bad. Someone got it before me though.
It's like a smaller version of a Citroen 2cv. Speaking of which, how is it that you've not reviewed one of those little guys?

That is a cool little car. I like all that room. Anyone know if the generator is also the started? and... Didn't they used to make dragsters out of the bodies?

Jourwalis - I'd give my left nut for a good 2cv.
@ Mladen Milic yep, and the car we now know as the classic 500 was badged "nuevo 500" literally 'new 500' over here in Holland the topolino's and licence-built simca variants were known as 'road louse' because they were tiny even by their standards back then.
it was also manufactured in austria. Here its called the Steyr "Baby"
"Uncle Topolinoooo!"
I want one !
I was looking forward to seeing it on the highway. Needs HD.
omg look how long ago this video was, the steam engine in the back was still in pieces, nor is the background picture there, or even the floor painted :D
nice looking little car ..
I've always been curious about these cars but I've never taken the time to read up on them. Jay left a lot of standard car questions unanswered. One cylinder, or two? I see what I think is a driveshaft tunnel in the interior, so I'll guess it is rear wheel drive. Strange, since the engine is in front of the front axle. How many gears? How does the radiator get air since it's behind the engine? Questions, questions, questions...
thats great
Should do a new video on this! :)
Nice car I like it
When you insure classics, its usually based on where they are stored and the miles that you put on them. I'd say his insurance premiums are relatively low.
They are so good looking
Awesome car
I bet you can hear the generator whining over the sound of the motor haha
Very cool car!
Jay please, make a new video for this car :)
very nice car
That's Jay's dream, to drive around with a cat in the passenger seat in hopes that girls will come running.
cool little deal
yay
I desperately want one.
The only Topolino (little mouse?) I have ever seen where turned into A/FX cars at the strip. The Italian Willy's Gasser.
*What a cute baby car.*
Mr Leno!!! There is an estate(?) one of these awating restoration in a tiny backstreet garage here in Croydon London. Its been 'waiting to be restored' for as long as I have lived round here, in other words 9 years. He never seems to start work on it. Dont know why and I gave up bothering to talk to him about it 5 years ago. Still there. Please message me if you want to adopt it. I'm not into money or finders fee, just someone to look after it.
Has Jay ever driven a Sprinter Trueno AE86?
It was called the "Topolino", because the headlights resembled Mickey Mouse ears.
oh my GOD THIS VID NEEDS 10 MINS!
Well... I drive an 1990 CRX and I'm fully aware that at just 50km/h (about 30mph) crash this thing starts to collapse at roof. It IS an unsafe car, especially if you are talking about US only CRX HF which was not much over 700kg (mine is over 1000kg stock). At around 1990 US CRX recieved some reinforcments (that reduced MPG) that increased its weight by about 50kg (side impact bars in doors, bars in bumpers, etc.) and it somehow managed to get 4/5 NHTSA stars rating...
I went to jaylenosgaragedotcom and watched the video there on the Topolino and it was exactly the same, short and leaving you wanting more. However there were more still photos and story of the car.
SO CUTE
omg i laughed so hard when he said the motors gone
The video seemed a bit short. I would have liked a closer look and a bit more history of the car.
Short and sweet
good one lol.im getting in my honda right now
Would love a stock one, and another body to stick a buick v6 turbo into.
yeah, we want to see more video Jay! And wheres the burnout?? I wanna see burnout! j/k
