1934 27' Chris-Craft Custom V12
The 1934 Chris-Craft Custom was the top of the line Chris -Craft at the time. It came with a standard 309 engine and an optional Scripps V-12 Engine. This particular boat is only 1 of two with the Scripps V-12 engine.
The original boat was so badly deteriorated that only 7 parts of the original boat are in this restoration. The skilled woodworker that reassembled the boat used original parts to replicate new ones, and technically speaking this boat is a restoration. Join us as we talk with the owner Russ and take a tour of this magnificent example of a boat.

Why does EVERYTHING designed in the 30's look better then EVERYTHING designed today??

People took pride in what they did back then and they built beautiful things to last, not throw away. These are my favorite boats of all time, not the more recent models. These are almost too beautiful to put in the water.

The engine is a Scripps Model 302 engine of 894 cubic inches. It was designed and spec'ed for fire trucks, hence the twin spark. This was near the top of the line for a boat engine in this era. And it is a beautiful boat, built in an age that still regularly turned outstanding woodwork and engines like this into rich men's playthings.

I seem to be attracted to anything made out of wood, including boats. This may be a technical restoration, but to me, it was essentially built from scratch in 3 years. That's intense. But can we talk about the interior(s)?

once they invented the fiberglass hull era , all attention to luxury and detail went out the window , it was all about getting em' out and selling them in volume , then again , those boats made boating affordable ,

Is it me or does the engine cover only covers half of the width of the boat?

Thanks for the question. That is way it appears however the other half was removed for the show, there was a elevated walkway that the boat was by, and they had to remove the one side so folks could see the engine. Thanks for watching!

If you ONLY have seven pieces of original wood, and an engine carcass, you DON'T have a restoration, you have a repo, and the actual value, in my mind, is a tiny fraction of the original. I found a bucket in an old shed with four Ford Model T spark plugs, so I built up a complete vehicle around them, using reproduction components, so now I have a "genuine" "restored" Model T Ford ??????? NOT ON YOUR LIFE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I might offer $20K for your faux Chris Craft, but not knowing the provenance of it's reproduction, would be reluctant to put it in the water for more than a weekend at a time.

In the old days, real "craftsman" with "pride" used their skills and talent to make everything with class, curve's, beauty, and still had functionality. Now, everything has no curve's, no style, just chop saw 90 degree corners! Guessing nobody owns a jigsaw, router, or a coffee cup to trace a corner..
