1930s GASOLINE BLOW TORCH RESTORATION - With Testing!

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this torch restoration video, I am restoring an antique Turner 206A gasoline blow torch. The Turner Brass Works produced this model over many decades, which made it challenging to identify the exact year. My best guess, based on the wooden handle and the shape the sticker left on the fuel tank, is that it is from the mid-1940's to the early 1950's. If you know more information on these, please leave a comment below.
This was a challenging restoration, and many parts gave me trouble. I was able to get help from a local machine shop, Sun Tools. They were extremely friendly and allowed me to watch and help the part being turned. Can't wait until I get my lathe in my shop!
But check these guys out! They were filling an order for a large workout equipment company when I was there. They do amazing work.
www.suntoolco.com/about-us
I was a bit nervous about firing this up. Everywhere I looked online showed some awful stories about catastrophic failure. So I really took my time a triple checked everything...twice. If you decide to work on one of these, please be extremely careful, the slightest error can be hazardous.

As your dad I’m a little prejudiced but you took this restoration to the next level. Many people don’t realize how much time it takes to do this whole production from the restoration itself (including Photoshop work on decal) to hours of editing. And a few calls to old dad to get some input😜. Very proud of you. Keep it up👍

Hello Martin, I have a lot to ask you fella. Hope that is all right. Be honest with me on the safety of this gasoline blow torch. Somehow this cannot be safe ??? Gasoline in your hand somehow just cannot get someone into trouble ??? Can you please give me some information to put my mind at ease ???? Thank you Sir Martin for you time also.

I just picked up the same one at a flea market! I had the same urge to make it some beautiful shelf art, but after watching your involved video I’ve decided this thing is meant to be dirty and I’d better just leave it that way. But I do intend on making it reliable to use at the least, so I really appreciate this video for seeing all the inner workings!

Inspires me to restore mine to working condition. I don't think my 1920s/1930s blow torch has been lit since the 1970s or 1980s and probably before it wound up at the antique store where I purchased it, the torch probably sat in an old person's shed or garage for years.

Now That is a proper restoration, and not just buffing it up, are painting a tool, and declaring you restored it. Very very nice work, and you've made yourself proud, by doing it the right way, and that's never the easy way. Yet, it's easier than doing it the second time. I already read your Pop's comments, and his chest busted the buttons off his shirt it swelled up so big. So it's obvious his feelings about the efforts you applied in a few pieces of shiny brass, and all that goes into a excellent video. That, and you listened, when he gave his advice. No school, like old school knowledge, when you need it.

Torch looks sweet. I just picked up two, one is a twin valve that can be run on kerosene. I hope to restore both but one is missing a knob and the other, the pump handle is broken. Only 8 bucks a piece! BTW little tip- mix acetone with ATF for a great penetrating oil.

OK, I thought I liked it when you sanded every little piece on the drill press (I did like it), I thought I liked it when you rebuilt those old screws heads (I did, really impressive), and I thought I liked it when you took the time to recreate the label (again, well done, sir); but refitting the spigot handle with a brass center piece was just too much. It's over the top. It's crazy for this piece. AND THAT IS WHY I AM A PROUD SUBSCRIBER. ...(also I really liked the polishing and painting of the logo plunger handle).

One of the best restorations I've seen. I really liked the vinegar flour thing, never seen that before, and was that a heat gun after the acetone on the stuck nut? Never seen that trick either, both good to know.

The cord inside the tank is less of a fuel filter and more a pathway to help get the fuel up into the nozzle, although it does help filter too 😉

I just bought one of these old beauties but I won’t even attempt to restore it as I do t have the patience or talent you do. I must admit, I would’ve been to scared to light it. Besides the chance to ruin the look, I surely would blow myself up! Great job! Oh and the wrench toss after trying to unscrew the neck from the body? OMG I just cracked up.

I am putting together a Turner Blowtorch restoration project for my 85 year old father; I am procuring all the materials for him to do the project, but I need some clarification what materials and tools you used in the video. I learned all my mechanical prowess from my father, but he is now 85 years old. Your input would be invaluable: 1. What is the diameter of the leather pump plunger cut out? 2. What size leather hole-stamp was used for the center hole to the new leather pump plunger? 3. What was your source of supply for Hibbett Sport Tanners Mink Oil Formula Gove Conditioner? 4. What was the size for the pump check valve rubber cutout punch? 5. What was the type of rubber used for the pump check valve? 6. What did you use for the fuel wick? 7. What did you use for the pump check valve thread dope? 8. What did you use for the main pump mounting thread gasket material? 9. What did you use for the bottom plug gasket sealing material to replace the lead gasket? Thank You and God Bless! LOUIS C. BAHR, MSgt Ret., USAF

@@PegasusProjects You are very kind! I am starting to appreciate it is cheaper to rebuild three Turner Blowtorches than just one. Rebuilding the one I have for my father is not very cost effective, but the memories and sentiments are worth a lifetime. After rebuilding this blowtorch, it will be viable for another 90 years. You have to value how well old things were built, and designed to be rebuilt and last!

I've got a Coleman 249.1 torch that appeared to have a brass base (the tank) but when I started polishing it, it turned from brass gold to a shiny silver. Any tricks to give it a brass look again?
