He shares how the races went for him and the team and what he thinks are the gaps that he needs to bridge to do well at that level. As always it was an insightful and entertaining chat with him. A bit about myself:
I'm Venkat/Venkateswara Rao in my work avatar, working as a Chief Data Analyst in the IT industry in Bangalore. I'm Venky/Bikeyvenky for my friends in the cycling community.
All through my life I struggled with weight and health issues. After multiple failed attempts through the life to get fit and healthy, in 2008, I managed to lose 16kgs. My motivation was to be able to take care of my unborn son with the thought that "if I'm not able to take care of myself, how am I going to take care of my family?". When my son was 6 months old, having lost 16kgs, I picked up a bike to keep that weight off and stay fit. That became a passion and lost more weight and became better at it. I continue to train myself not just to stay fit but also race competitively in races in and outside the country. I also have been coaching a few riders to get stronger and faster at cycling since 2016.
With 'The Working Athlete Podcast', I have a bit of a selfish motive. That is, it will provide me an opportunity for me to meet and talk to many people from all walks of life across different sports to learn how they manage an active lifestyle while doing well at work. I hope to share those learnings with all of you. That way, it will help both you and me to keep learning and keep growing.

Great insights champ, thanks for breaking it down succinctly and putting things in perspective. We've got a long way to go, every athlete deserves more at stages where they are representing the country. Thanks a lot Venky for these conversations, absolutely enjoying it!

Why does the uci event prep sound so similar to our state champs i dont know... in some way i think joel and the guys did way better than any other team would have been able to... years of riding shitty conditions i guess.

Viewers brings in the funds. Thats how sports work. We dont have any major viewership in India so money wont be invested by companies or media houses. Remember te TOF winner makes less than 10% of a top F1 driver who doesnt make anywhere near to what a top footballer or NBA star makes! 😊 Its just sad we as a country has long way to go....

Yup, but nobody is talking about there not being funding. For a sport that is growing, it will come, with time. There are other resources that are not monetary, which can be utilised to progress the sport. I specifically mentioned “you cannot just write a blank check to the Indian Cycling Team” Your point, although true, makes no sense in the context of this conversation.

Not just money all kind of support will come if viewership increases. Imagine a UCI event with name Tour of India with professional teams participating would be amazing! 2% of AD budget of Jio is more than enough for a full fledged professional team but they just focus on one particular sport in India 😢 Finally our state level associations are pretty badly managed. Espeically in my state which probably is the worse in India

@@sankarpai Again, what you're saying is not wrong, but you are missing the point of the discussion. Its about leveraging resources that already exist. Rather than focusing on what doesn't exist as yet, we need to go and look at what we have, how best we can utilise and optimise certain aspects of what we already do. Investment will come when the Intent and Initiative are correct.
