    Keaton did ALL OF HIS OWN stunts. During the filming of one of his 'short-films,' he actually broke his neck, but continued filming anyway. Year's later in an interview, he said, it was an ENTIRE YEAR before he realized his neck was.broke.

    Lawrence Lewis - You'll only see this in his earliest silent short films with Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle. Ain't he just adorable? ;-) I think he smiled on a rare occasion in a "talkie" or two. But I just stick to his silent films before M-G-M ruined his career with utter disrespect, no creative control, and horribly crappy movies (for the most part).

    Luke the dog *not* climbing a ladder. Arbuckle's swimming was fantastic, and that 4th wall break was beautiful. He really is underrated compared to many of the other greats of the silent era, mainly due to Hearst. Keaton wasn't much more than a sidekick in many of the films with Arbuckle, unsurprising as Arbuckle was directing most of them, but you can see his future already.

    Well, remember this way back 1917, when a girl in a leotard might still have been considered risque. The "Roarin' Twenties" era of shorter skirts and hair was still a few years away. But, yeah - Buster's so cute (and muscular!) here! :-)

  • @talkinghead2004
    @talkinghead2004 Жыл бұрын

    Amazing. It's so early in his career that Buster hasn't yet perfected his Buster character. He smiles and laughs throughout the movie. At one point (11.07) he laughs naturally and then remembers that his character is supposed to cry. Fatty Arbuckle breaks the fourth on a number of occasions. The Keystone Cops get involved. A real snapshot of early cinema.

    I came to this site after watching Jay Leno do a segment on "Fatty" Arbuckle's car. I'd heard of the name before but had no idea about what he was to Hollywood. I haven't laughed so hard in a long time!!! For being a heavy set man, he certainly was light on his feet. Reminded me alot of Jackie Gleason. Those were real actors back then, doing their own stunts without the luxury of retakes, varied camera angles and all the other advances that the modern film industry offers current "Actors". This was FUN!!!

    I always wondered how all these silent film comedians could do all these prat falls, over and over, in film after film, without doing serious and lasting harm to themselves. everyone mentions Keaton in this film but completely neglect the rest of cast like alice mann, who played buster's girlfriend, agnes neilson, who played fatty's wife and even the wonderful keystone cops! and fatty arbuckle was the director and star of this film. he actually rivaled chaplin's fame in early silent comedy shorts until hearst decided to use his newspapers to ruin his career for a crime of which fatty was acquitted. and Al (Fuzzy) St. John was the third male lead here. he had a career that spanned 40 YEARS mainly in b-movie westerns!
