1912 Rayo Pony Lantern No 21 Restoration / Rebuild
Hello and welcome folks.
Today I'm restoring this 1912 Pony No 21 Lantern.
This item was sent to me by good friend Steve.
/ @slwrestorations
I received this over 12 months ago but I waited until I had all the tools required to be able to restore this to a level I would be satisfied with.
This might look like an easy project but it has taken me a good 6 weeks to complete.
I found this to be one of the most challenging projects I have completed so far.
Turning the new base and inner pieces was something I had never tried before so this took a bit of practice to get it right. I seemed to have drama after drama along the way but it all came together in the end,
If your reading this please watch some of my other projects and leave a comment.
Receiving comments is one of the best things about restoration work, it makes it all worth while.

I know you have to use intricate repair techniques for your audience, and I do understand that. But for me, "As I don't have a lathe nor have I been trained on one" I would have to resort to J B weld for this repair! Like I said, "No Lathe" so I would have to McGyver any parts that were toast!😆 You did a good job on it!
@Austeration
Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching Steve, great comment. I haven't been trained on a lathe either, I either just make it up as I go along or I'll watch to learn. If I didn't recently buy the lathe I would have been the same as you and made something up with a drill some tape and a paperclip. I'm sure there are other ways to do the same job. @@Austeration appreciate the response. I would have thought you were trained on that lathe! Well done! I have thought about getting a lathe myself. I have been a mechanic/fabricator for 50 years, and have made many things. You folks now days "as well as myself" have youtube to get information from, what a game changer that is! in earlier times, 70's and 80's you either had the knowledge passed down to you, or you got it from a book, or in most of my projects, trial and error! Carry on my friend, I could go on yacking all night!🤐

@@stevethecountrycook1227 That's all good Steve. Happy to chat any time. I use to be a mechanic my self over 30 years ago so I know exactly what you mean. So much easier now days. You should look at getting your self a lathe. I looked for over 12 months before I got mine and now I don't know what I ever did without one. It opens your options up to so many more possibilities. I enjoy trying to come up with inventive ways to do things, it might not be the correct way but as long as it works. 👍

Beautiful job. The powder painting looks great. I made a bottom for a lantern when I was 10 years old using a coffee can lid. Incidentally.... I believe the inside of the rear shroud should have been silver to reflect the light. It might have originally been tin plated.

Thanks for watching Jim. That's pretty clever of you replacing the bottom at the age of 10. I do believe the inside was possibly just tin but I think it looks better being all the one colour.
