1906 Astahl - 117-Year-Old Car - Full Review

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This is a 1906 Astahl, yes you heard that right 1906.
It is widely accepted to be French, although some say it could have been German.
We do know however that this one has been in the possession of one family for the last 50 years. My good friend Tom Boyd @tom_boyd_blacksmith is the current owner, it was gifted to him by his dad, Nick. And rightly so, as Tom has been working on this particular car since he was 9 years old.
With an engine displacement of just under 1000cc and a whopping 8 horsepower, the Astahl has been restored to its former glory and then some, thanks to Boyd’s clever instillation of a starter motor...
Over two days, Boyd and I not only travel back in time to 1906, but also down memory lane in the glorious English countryside, just as we had first started almost 30 years ago..
History of Astahl…
While there isn’t a lot of information about the brand, Wikipedia had this to say…
It's first location was on the Rue Cormeilles in Levallois-Perret. The company at first had just two lathes and three employees, one of them Peugeot's former chief designer. Delage initially produced parts for Helbé, with the De Dion-Bouton engine and chassis assembled by Helbé; Delage added only the body.
The first model was the Type A, a voiturette which appeared in 1906. It was powered by a one-cylinder De Dion-Bouton of 4.5 or 9 hp (3.4 or 6.7 kW; 4.6 or 9.1 PS). Like other early carmakers, Delage participated in motor racing, entering the Coupe de Voiturettes held at Rambouillet in November 1906 with a 9 hp (6.7 kW; 9.1 PS) racer. Seven days of regularity trials decided the entrants, and one of the two 9 metric horsepower (6.6 kW) Delage specials was wrecked in the rain on the fifth; nevertheless, Ménard, the other works driver, came second in the event, behind a Sizaire-Naudin.

I am now 73 as of today, and my kids, and older grand kids, are welcome to drive any car that they like, and frequently do, the Dedion is perfect for them as it has good brakes and goes like the clappers, it is totally reliable and starts second pull every time. Oh by the way cars used to run on what is essentially high level alcohol, I suppose that methanol would be a close match.

I use old leather belting it is about 1/4 to 5/16 thick and does well. I use this on clutches for several of my cars and it seems to last for ever provided that you don't allow much slippage. It seems a little savage on my Clement but works well on the Argyll and Talbot. I vac bag my spare leather soaked in neetsfoot. You will find old leather belting hanging on a nail in most older farms, because it was expensive and they needed it to run machinery.

There are several De Dion powered1906 Delarge in Australia one being owned by Geoff Symonds in Sydney. His I believe has a 9hp full mechanical valved engine.

You have bastardised a beautiful very rare car, by adding a starter. You woos, get out and crank you lazy thing, like the rest of us. De Dion also had a 3 speed by 1904 and the AL of the same year as yours was 8hp and 3 speed, Oh and the oil pump was manual on the firewall and works beautifully.
