1904/39 Portuguese Mauser cleanup. Atlantic Firearms

Cleaning up one of the recent Portuguese Mausers that have shown up on the market. This 1904/39 model came from ‪@AtlanticFirearms‬ and one of their recent bundle deals with surplus ammo and a bayonet. Nice to see an influx of these lately.

Hello, sir and everybody. I am a Portuguesecitizen, and I have been in our army in 1985/6. Some decades before we had this and other Mauser rifles, as well as Mannlichers, etc. The National Republic Guard still uses Mausers on parades. We took them to our ex colonial war which took place in Angola, Mozambique, and Guinea, since 1961 until 1975. We had Lugers too. Most of them from D.W.M. and again, Mauser. All our firearms of the XXth Century were good guns. This is a typical Portuguese contract: the crest, the leather sling, the markings, everything is quite normal. Our State prefer to sell them to other countries, instead of selling our historical guns here. They also got good reasons for it. 1000 Thanks for the video, Sir!!

So strangely enough, I was out of my usual cleaner (simple green or something natural) so I used some 'Goo Gone' and it did really well. Having not used it much before I immediately cleaned it again after then did one coat of BLO. I've had good luck with it in the past not affecting the wood so felt OK doing it but it wasn't mine so I made sure to test on a small section internally first. Very pleased with the results. @@The_Casual_Collector

Of course. One last thing is that I think it worked well for me because most, if not all, the cosmoline was still 'jelly-ish' so nothing was hard crusted on there, just sticky. Hope yours cleans up well. @@The_Casual_Collector

Hello there. for the metal parts I used mineral spirits and for the stock, because the cosmo was very light and runny, I used 'goo-gone' and it works well for that kind of thing and doesnt harm the wood. Thanks for the comment!

  • @MidwesternFC

I too am always looking for better ways for clean up. For this stock it was still very 'wet' cosmoline so I was able to get rid of most of it by just using some goo-gone as it helped with the random patches or harder, sticky residue. I tested on some other wood finishes first, then a little on the inside and it worked well with no issues for the wood. When it comes to thicker or more caked in cosmoline I usually use the 'hair dryer' or 'summer outside in a garbage bag' method. Although it takes longer, it will inevitably all seep out of there to be wiped off. Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment. Always nice to touch base with other collectors! All the best on your projects going forward into the new year. 🎉

I’ve watched some other videos you’ve posted and they didn’t disappoint. Haven’t tried the goo gone yet. Usually mineral spirits. If I have to strip the stock then a lot more research is done do by the time I’m done it’s as close to a factory referb as possible.

I love mineral spirits for metal. I don't use it on wood just because I feel it dries it out more than necessary, but just my opinion. Very kind of you, thank you. Of course each item is different, but as a general rule I like the 'Big 45 Frontier' metal cleaner. Inexpensive and works great. If you don't have that, 0000 steel wool works good for surface rust too. If its deeper pitting/rusting it may require something more drastic. I was lucky as this comsomiline was still in jelly form and not hard crusted so came off easily with some mineral spirits. Good luck, hope yours cleans up well!

I like Masers and I like “restoration” videos, especially firearms. I was hoping to watch some of your process of “cleaning” as was referenced in the title. Unfortunately, there was none.
