    I think Meta will be on a list like this eventually. Imagine trying to get your mostly older user base to use VR for things they can already do more efficiently.

    Meta is not the only company pursuing the metaverse concept, Facebook rebranding themselves as "Meta" was just a ploy to get people to associate Facebook with all of the metaverse, which is excellent marketing.

    I don't think they're trying to get older people interested in the Metaverse and in Facebook. I think they're trying to bring us younger people back in again. Many younger people, such as myself, have quit Facebook. And I believe this whole "metaverse" thing is to get into the VR hype and bring us back into giving all our data to Facebook again. They're not trying to bring older people from Facebook to Meta, but rather trying to bring us from people-who-quit-Facebook-years-ago-as-it-got-lame to Meta. They need more people and more data.

    I remember my grandfather having a CueCat. He already owned a VCR that had a fancy remote with barcode scanner, which allowed him to program his VCR’s auto record function using barcodes in the weekly TV guide he got in the mail. To him, the CueCat seemed like a logical extension to this and he loved new tech. The CueCat concept didn’t work for him though, because (like you said) you had to be near your PC when reading and few magazines and newspapers supported the format because hardly anyone owned a Cue Cat.

    So, the cuecat (#19) was awesome for it's time. It let you quickly read barcodes and get them into a computer for like super cheap. It was super easy to just code it to pull raw data into Acess or Excel (remember folks this was before RSS), you could also run the data (barcodes) through some IRC and forums (depending on what you needed) to actually populate your database/spreadsheet. Was is hugely popular among consumers? No . . . was it a failure? No, I went through 3 of them, and knew lots of other engineering/physics/Comp Sci folks that actually bought as many of them as we could get our hands on. And honestly, they worked better (with custom software) at scanning barcodes than your phones camera does right now.

    Skype didn't really die, and they didn't become complacent. Microsoft got so far ahead in development with Skype that they felt it wasn't the same app anymore. So they redesigned the UI and renamed it Teams. Because if its tight integration with Microsoft's other product, Teams became more business focused and is now the preferred communication app for businesses around the world. Why use give apps for email, instant messaging and calls, when you could use one seamlessly integrated office package?

  • @00SNIVY00
    @00SNIVY002 жыл бұрын

    Skype was a huuuuuge fail. I remember using it for instant messaging in high school and remembering the day that I updated it on my iPod Touch, I was in the gym for an assembly. I opened it after updating and thought "yeah, it's time to look for an alternative, I hate what they've done with this" The first thing I remember hating about the changes was moving to cloud storage instead of local storage. I believe before that it was basically device to device, so if you logged in on a new device, your messages would be retrieved from another one? Or you'd at least have a local database on that device. Since then it's just gotten worse and worse.

    Thank you for another great list! I do have to disagree with you on Skype, though. Microsoft didn't buy Skype to compete with Zoom, they bought it for Teams. The fact that it had a consumer following was nice, but for everyone who uses Zoom for external calls, I bet you they're making 10x as many calls on Teams, and if Microsoft didn't have a solid video conferencing solution, Teams would have crashed and burned. So it's annoying that they didn't keep up with the consumer side, but that wasn't really the main point.

    Only thing I think you missed a bit on was Skype. Microsoft certainly didn’t soar with it directly, but they essentially bought it to jump start what is now Teams and Teams is really the primary meeting and communication app next to email in the corporate world. Zoom came and went with the pandemic, with some circles still over there, but Teams is here to stay for business. It wasn’t quite ready yet in early 2020, but it’s ubiquitous now and anchors the office 355 user base.

  • @stansman5461

    It exists, but in the background. The best time to grow and capitalize the online video conference market was unfortunately the pandemic. And while Teams still exists, and Zoom is almost gone, Teams still missed the biggest payday of our lives.

    @WIT_SkyCam

    @@stansman5461 I'm not sure what you're trying to say here. Teams is very much in the foreground of businesses using Microsoft 365 products. Not "all" businesses use 365 products of course, but around 20 Billion in revenue last I saw is a big chuck, and every one of those companies gets Teams for free and a large portion of them use it for at least business chat and video if not also external collaboration. If you mean to say that the public market of consumers doesn't see Teams much, that is true, but that's not, nor was it ever, the target for Teams. Teams wasn't ever trying to capitalize on the public consumer video conference market, they were trying to become the de-facto standard for business collaboration and they've pretty much done that for everyone using 365. And to be clear, I'm not saying nobody in business uses Zoom or others, because many certainly do, but the market share of Teams is unmistakable in the business world.

Teams also replacing slack and other plattforms, bulldozing into the buisness market thanks to 365 integration. Zoom is dead behind and forgotten in 2023.

    The ZTE Hawkeye sounds like a great idea but the problem is that it only goes for specific people. The specs are bad, the consumers ideas were only cool to a select few and other phone types like gaming phones and high specs, cheap and midranges as well as flagships. To do this is just confusing and wouldn't sell as well if it's only for a select few who like this. Not good for sales. If they want to do this they should've used better hardware and come up with better ideas.

    The funny thing is that Corona Beer sales skyrocketed in the first 3 weeks of March 2020. Ayds sales fell off a cliff by about 50%.

    I remember Elio. My parents wanted one. One of their hurdles was getting approval to license their vehicles as cars instead of motorcycles since most people don't have a motorcycle endorsement on their license.

    Similar to the facetime bug, you have the intentional feature in Amazon Echo Shows where you could "drop in" on somebody else's Show, and the call would be automatically picked up after a few minutes. This was quickly removed but still a huge potential issue

    for scribble pen, I think if they don't have the pen side, simply just detect color and give a pretty accurate rgb or cmyk value, it would be much easier to develop, I would buy one too.

    that tech has existed for years already though, hence how paint stores can give you the exact colour paint you want if you give them a sample of the colour.

    I'd say that, for skype, while the video conference aspect was overtaken by zoom, but the social aspect was overtaken by Discord. Discord has some basic video and voice conferencing features, but it's main attraction is it's nature as a platform for invite-only communities. This was originally intended to let friends play games together with voicechat without relying on in-game voicechat, or for games that didn't have it, but now is used for... a lot of things really.

    The cue cat was actually useful if you could find companies that supported it, I got one from a gadget guru friend and used it a bunch as gaming companies were all in too. For what I used it for it was actually pretty awesome
