LISTEN UP GENTS , I want to put the word out about a incident that happened to me. I had a 4 1/2" milwaukee wire wheel completely come apart on me. I had a 149 pieces of small wire pulled out of hands and arms and my thighs from my waste to my knees...went straight through my jeans and shirt sleeves. I , and my coworkers have NEVER seen this happen in 25 years in the trade. Why am I telling you guys this ??? To make sure y'all wear your PPG's , I had on safety glasses as well as a face shield which definitely saved my eyes and neck...I also had on a leather apron which saved my torso. EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED guys and be safe. Oh , great vid brother.

@@RogueEagle What's up brother ? For once I actually did use the guard , as you probably know the 4 1/2"-5" m18 fuel angle grinder comes with two guards. To be blatantly honest I actually think the guard is what put myself and my coworker next me in a world of hurt.....I normally never use the guard. If the guard had been OFF of the tool , the fragments would have dispersed in a 360 degree pattern , however with the guard on and the way it was positioned combined with where I was standing directed the majority of the fragments back towards me and my coworker... imagine a shit ton of hornet stings at once....then once again as all of the pieces were removed. At least the nurse was hot....😎

I was super excited and full of anticipation waiting for the X-Lock to hit the stores. When it did I couldn't justify buying one when I already have a perfectly good "regular" style grinder. I have many other tools tools to buy before I go buying this fancy one. I played with one at the store and love it! The guard especially! So many tools...so little money... I tell ya, these tool companies have it down to a science making just the right features, improvements, variations, etc. And releasing tools in the exact order to always have me wanting more...more...MORE!!!! I'm probably preaching to the choir here. Thanks for another great review.

Hi, I am an occasional user and have a couple of corded grinders and have wanted a cordless one for some time. Went to buy a makita and saw several options. Initially disregarded this x lock model as it was 50% more but then I looked at all the other features and decided to bite the bullet and get latest tech. £32 for 5 months instead of £23 (good old amazon!) Glad I did as I'm well impressed! Brake is a good feature as is the variable dial but the x lock is so convenient and makes me want to use it more. In fact, I keep it on the work bench so I can just grab it real quick. I found the accessories pretty good value here in the UK. They are more expensive but they are high quality (borch) and you can sometimes get 115mm discs half the price of 125. Great review. Subscribed 👍

I just bought my first X-Lock today, I bought a corded Makita version, I only tested it, seems cool, been wanting 1 for a long time, but finally justified the purchase, I already own like 20 grinders for different purposes, including a 20V Dewalt, I bought it for different reason than most, many of my grinders need a different wrench. and I finally got sick of dealing with it for when I go somewhere, most recently, my Dewalt that uses an allen wrench stripped, I had to fight with it, I didnt have a spare tool with me, oops, & I used vice grips to get it off, but maybe 30 min wasted over that. had times I cant find correct wrench, maybe I put it in my pocket last time, and didnt make it to tool bag, yeah, maybe it gets burried and have to remove all tools from tool bag, so this will be in my service bag, it will be so worth extra cost to not deal with wrench on road. I will still carry my old Dewalt grinder, as a backup, but plan to make this exclusive for work, unless I need to bring a big grinder for job. most work I do at home, so no real issues, but from time to time, yeah I need to haul my welding stuff to someone's home. I hope this fits the bill of not needing to worry about stupid wrench. lol.

HaHa I know! While I was editing it I exclaimed out loud "Why didn't you use the x-lock on both of them you fucking idiot?" But it is still a valid test because it showed that you can get thinner discs for a standard grinder than an x-lock, and that makes a big difference to cut speed and disc longevity. I'm surprised you are the only one to mention it.

A lot of diamond hole cutters are designed to thread onto angle grinders. They are also heavy so I don't know how X-Lock will cope with that kind of weight. For now the standard thread is much more versatile and accessories are way cheaper. I also bought a Milwaukee Fixtec nut for my grinder after which I've not needed the wrench.

Why would one lock themselves into having to pay 2x or 3x the money for consumables when it is so easy to change regular discs? This is just a ploy to charge more for x-lock discs. The problem is that you only find 'professional' discs in Xlock, industrial ones like Pferd and Klingspor are all almost all in conventional style. If you are a sporadic user or only use 2 types of disk x-lock is fine but for more industrial use or if you want to use more premium specialized discs the regular ones are the way to go.

    18V vs 40V it's like a badass wife with a skinny husband :D

X-Lock is very cool. As you said, it removes the need for multiple grinders. However, there are also drawbacks. The most significant one is that the cheapest discs are over two times as expensive and some arent even available like the ones for concrete grinding. Also, there are very few brands that are invested into this system. As far as i can see only Tyrolit, Pferd and Bosch themselves provide equipment, all of them very expensive.

That 40v battery size is monstrous!! I do not want that.

I want to like the Makita 18v grinders but why did they have to make the battery mount so damn long? They could have made it like 2 full inches shorter overall. Even the Chinese clones do it better than Makita themselfes. The 40v model is much more compact in that regard, so much wasted space on the 18v. And why dont they put the new style quick adjust guard on the regular 18v grinders? The current adjustment is awful, it always comes loose

That’s the variable speed version of the grinder. Base is bigger to make room for the extra electronics. The regular 18v grinders are exactly like the 40v ones except for the angle of the battery being 90° to the tool.

@@banannaninja I know but there is no reason to make it this big. It's like an extra inch just for the little turning knob. There is no extra electronics involved, every other manufacturer manages to keep it compact. They even could have made a push button design with different speeds like the impact drivers. Bosch does this for example

id rather a better way store the spanner on the tool, or just make the tool came with 10 spanner. i wont really trust that system, not now. when it comes to work, i want simple and foolproof.

I love my makita tools, but honestly I'm not down with this. Is it convenient? Sure..but it also raises the price of the consumables considerably and frankly it isn't worth the extra cost for the trivial amount of convenience it offers.

Just a con to make you use their overpriced disc's, the X lock disc is more than twice the price of a normal disc.

One thing: We wish our tools not be heavy! So in my opinion, 40 v is to heavy and not worth money...
