18th February 1967: FA Cup 4th Round
MAIN MATCH - Wolverhampton Wanderers v Everton: The 4th Round draw saw FA Cup holders Everton face a tricky match at Molineux against a Wolves side pushing hard for promotion in Division Two. Despite adding Blackpool's World Cup winner Alan Ball to their Cup winning side success in Division One was already beyond them by this game at the end of February. The game goes along way to show why winger Johnny Morrissey found his name was at the top of Jack Charlton's infamous 'black book' which was for player's he intended to end their careers as they had done to others.

I wasn't at this game, but saw the replay at Goodison the following Tuesday. Going into the game the Wolves manager, Ronnie Allen predicted a win for Wolves on the basis of this display. Everton brought in Derek Temple to replace Jimmy Gabriel. and his direct pace through the middle along with Jimmy Husband secured a 3-1 win, they scored the three goals. Everton were formidable at Goodison in the 60s. Wolves were promoted later that season, and in September 1967 played Everton at Goodison, and got a 0-0 draw. Ernie Hunt again stood out with his range of passing, finding space, and link up play. The next week the Everton board spent a record £75,000 to sign him for the blues, Back then the city centre firm I worked in included a manager who was an EFC shareholder and stated that Ernie Hunt was signed to replace Alan Ball. And was duly given this No 8 jersey. The team balance was lost with both of them in the team with Alex Young and Colin Harvey. Ernie left Everton at the end of the 67-68 season. And joined Coventry. What would the current would give for such a great player today. This was also one of Jimmy Gabriel's last games for Everton. And this Wolves team excelled in the top flight into the 70s with Derek Dougan added to the team.

A "soft" pen as we would say today. More things change, the more they stay the same...big team syndrome. If you are Everton,Liverpool, Arsenal,Spurs, Chelsea,Man U and Man City you'll get decisions. Anyone else, good luck!
