My father, who was not Mongolian, was a Professor of Mongolian and Tibetan languages and literature here in California. We lived all over the world, from Turkey to Sweden and Costa Rica when I was a child; however, our home base was always in California. When he flew to Ulaanbaatar to receive a special award, I think he flew a Chinese airline for that flight in the late 1960s or early 1970s (?), he loved to tell the story of that flight. I was a young child, but I remember him telling me that people put live chickens in the overhead bins during the flight and one person brought a sheep on the flight! How cool is that? I love Mongolian people and the culture. In fact, my godfather, Unensechen, was Mongolian, and my middle name is a Mongolian name. My father has passed away, and I miss my daddy a lot.

Happened to me every time I flew into Newark from Europe; became tiresome after a few years, so eventually spoke to an agent that I had become familiar with. She confided in me, with a warning that she would hunt me down if I let it be known that it was herself that had told me this*, that I had a very similar name to an Irish gangster that they would like to have words with, and that I was always flagged inbound to EWR, and delayed until it could be confirmed that I was not said gangster. The gangster was shot dead in Dublin, and since then I've not been delayed when transiting EWR. (*she said this half-jesting, but tbh, I wouldn't want to put it to the test).

I visited Mongolia in 2008. All the yurts I visited had rugs/carpets to cover the ground. Mongolia was/is still a place with a nomadic culture. I suspect this is the reason for the special carpet check. Beautiful place, btw. It’s worth getting out onto the steppe.

Mongolian men tend to drink alot and then think all the women are their girlfriend. So if you chat one up, they will take it that you are trying to steal their woman. And react accordingly. Even if she don't know that guy. Still, a sight for sore eyes.

I worked at FRA Airport, and from my experience, I can tell you that last summer was terrible as we lacked staff in all sections. There are multiple reasons, primarily because of Covid restrictions; Noel, you should be happy that the lady at the counter simply verifies the documents from you verbally and does not check ALL of them personally because we were told by Airlines to check each and every Covid related document. And it should be done within an already very tight time window. Unfortunately, it will not get better till the middle of next year when you have enough trained people who can join the workforce and contribute. So Yeah, my personal advice is to take either direct flight whenever possible and, regardless of stories you hear, come early at the Airport and be the first at the counter. 😉

I had a chance to travel to Mongolia in December 1998. I transited through Beijing and flew on MIAT on a 727. Wonderful people who totally ignored the standard flight safety rules. Plane was old. Seats did stay upright, overhead bins wouldn’t shut. Bags piled high on seats. As soon as we started descent into Ulaanbaatar, half the plane got up to get their carryons from overhead bins or seats where it was piled up. While the FA frantically tried to get everyone to sit down, many did not. Amazing to see them standing as we landed and then it was a mad dash as they all rushed to get off the plane. I wisely sat back and watched them. Safer. Lovely people and amazing visit, but definitely a different airline experience. 😂

Having delivered and trained crews in UB, out of Chingas Hahn airport, on the first B737-800 for MIAT (MEE-YOTT), I spent a lot of time with their government safety personnel. Great experience and great people; albeit cold into the fall. The old airport was one way in and one way out due to a small mountain directly off the departure end of runway 14. The predominant wind was from the west so delay was often encountered. The 738 had a 15-knot tailwind supplement so that helped.

3 years since I flew to Frankfurt. Flying there in just over a fortnight. Only ever done it as the destination rather than for a connection. The Lufthansa luggage drop off desk at the rail terminal makes such a big difference. Return flight leaves 10:20 - I'm not looking forward to Frankfurt airport for a mid morning flight. I'm expecting it to be absolutely mobbed.

Hi Mr. Philips, great video as per usual, MIAT Mongolian Airlines, ok, well not what I was expecting either, the B767 is a cool plane for sure, I remember when our national Airline had those, got the chance to set foot on it but not flown on our national airline, however I did get the chance to fly Condor's B767 and before that time a long ways back in 1997 Qantas B767, Anyway the MIAT business class looks ok in the B767 even better than their B737 which looked older and a bit old fashion. Looking forward for your next flight and to get a small glimpse of Asia, I will definitely be looking forward for your video down under also.

Only 1h for your baggage in FRA? Then they were fast. 3 weeks ago I landed in FRA back from Rome and had planed 3 1/2h from Landing till my onward connection via DB. Long story short. Flight was delayed by 20mins and the rest of the time (2 1/2h) was spend waiting for baggage. And there were no information given how long it would take expect for the automated announcement that due to high amounts of passengers there would be delays. Missed the train, had to rebook out of own pocket. Thanks for nothing FRA and Scamhansa

Finally, someone who agrees. I dislike flying through these two cities too. I'll put Frankfurt on the "always avoid" list while I put Amsterdam as "I'll guess I'll take it (if I have to)." To be fair, I only flew through Amsterdam during the beginning of the Pandemic in 2020, so everyone was just a mess. Still left a bad impression on me though.

I rarely take connecting/transiting flights but in future I will always allow 5 or 6 hours after a panic with Aer Lingus at Dublin. Traveling London-USA with supposedly comfy 3.5 hour stop in Dublin. Inbound for Gatwick an hour late then no stand free meant I entered the terminal and USA immigration with an hour till boarding and the painful slow US immigration meant a run to the already boarding plane. Not nice preparation for the next 8 hours over to States! Great video Noel
