18a. Night of Sense: The Biblical Desert, Part 1, with Thomas Keating

Fr. Thomas Keating presents the Christian contemplative prayer tradition as a response to the existential human condition. Privations in the areas of instinctual needs lead to malformation in a human’s sense of self. The call to follow Christ is an invitation to address this issue. The process involves developing a relationship with God and often a Night of Sense, a time of experiencing God’s absence. Fr. Keating compares this transition in the relationship to the Biblical desert. While the change in the relationship can be unsettling, it is actually a part of the healing process.
This is one video in a series of 31 hour-long talks by Thomas Keating that make up his foundational video teachings, “The Spiritual Journey with Fr. Thomas Keating.” All of these talks are now available on KZread, and are listed below with links. Fr. Thomas was an internationally renowned theologian, speaker and author of dozens of books including “Open Mind, Open Heart.”

Is there a particular book or talk by Fr Keating that expounds much more on the night of sense and these 3 energy centers or false programs and how to overcome them?

I think John of the Cross explains it. I have a paperback, not sure whose translation. It's probly online from the M.I.T. classics archive or something. But ironically this weaning process addresses the very urge in us to look externally for the solution. It's made me tired of words, yet I keep chasing after them, in this age of jibber jabber.

Original Sin, is separating from God (which never really happend, since we live in God and God in us), which is ignorance, and the healing is, to "eat" from the Tree of Life. 🕊🐑❣
