17b. Spirituality in Everyday Life, Part 2, with Thomas Keating

Fr. Thomas Keating continues his exploration of working the fruits of inner silence into the arena of daily life, offering a number of concrete suggestions to help forestall the diminishing of our store of inner silence. His suggestions include: deliberately dismantling our chief program for happiness; using an active word phrase to help accept what is; cultivating a loving acceptance of oneself; guarding the heart by letting go of the present moment; using a “minute book” of short sentences to re-establish one’s intention; worshipping with a liturgical community; joining a weekly Centering Prayer support group; and, perhaps most importantly, disengaging ourselves from over-identifying with a particular group. Such practices, he concludes, support a wholistic and comprehensive response to the call of the Gospel.
This is one video in a series of 31 hour-long talks by Thomas Keating that make up his foundational video teachings, “The Spiritual Journey with Fr. Thomas Keating.” All of these talks are now available on KZread, and are listed below with links. Fr. Thomas was an internationally renowned theologian, speaker and author of dozens of books including “Open Mind, Open Heart.”

When I tried this centering prayer message I felt a strong presence with me telling me I was worthless to God, despised and ridiculous. It told me never to come back to God again but stay with the devil where I belong. It was a really horrible experience. I hate centering prayer. Nobody should put themselves in this situation.

It is natural for any of us to feel worthless and despised at times, but these feelings do not come from God. God’s loving, indwelling presence always affirms the good in us. “Be still and know that I am God.” Ps 46:10 “When you pray, go to your inner room, close the door and pray to your Father in secret. And your Father, who sees in secret will reward you." Matthew 6.6 What is Centering Prayer? Centering prayer is a loving response to these two Scripture invitations. One’s intention is to consent to God‘s love, presence and action by going to a quiet place, closing the door by letting go of all thoughts, feelings and commentaries and gently returning to one’s intention and resting in God‘s loving presence. It is a prayer of consenting and letting go. If you are ever interested in trying Centering Prayer again, it is described in the video at kzread.info/dash/bejne/c45n1ZuMpMraaJM.html and online at www.contemplativeoutreach.org/centering-prayer-method/.

Don’t give up. That’s the “divine therapy” he talks about in action. Good luck!

Thank you for your responses but I only pray the rosary now for safety and it has gone well ever since. I encourage anyone who experiences demonic presences while doing new age meditations to pray the rosary daily and cling to the liturgy of the church.

Thanks to Contemplative Outreach we have a wonderful video library of the spiritual journey. Tape 17b is foundational for the Welcoming prayer and I suspect Mary Morkowski was present in the audience when this talk was recorded. 🙏
