I am a 63 year old man who has spent his working life in the ugly world of nuclear power plants. I am retired now and unfortunately disabled. I must tell you that I have enjoyed every video of yours that I have watched. They have opened a world for me beyond concrete and steel, and have brought me back to my younger days when I spent much of my time in the forests and lakes of the rural area where I once lived. I wish I could have had your videos then to teach me to be "mindful" of more than what I was hunting for or angling to eat. Your eye for detail impresses me, and I find your lovely voice soothing. Thank you for these videos. I have ordered both your books and eagerly await them.

Wonderful narration 🫸🫷 can I offer a tip for your Seff's good health.. toxic fur😵‍💫.. my white labs 14 & doesn't get ANY flees.. only occasionally worm her with cinder vinegar she looooves it.. bathe in baking soda bath's 2-4 weekly & don't rinse.. kills any/all flees they just float off.. however she does like long soaks (30mins or more) .. fixes & avoids fungal or yeast skin probs & being a water softener makes their coat soft & boofy.. she seldom scratches.. it's gotta be healthy .. 🇳🇿🇳🇿🇳🇿💕nz

Came upon your channel 3 days ago and have been semi binge watching ever since. I can because I am retired. The scenery is beautiful and the videos are so relaxing. My family is British and we moved to the states in 1959. Even though I was only 8 at the time you never lose the feeling that England is your home country. My mother will be 90 in May and the pull for her is even stronger. I know she would love your videos and, also, your journals. For her 90th birthday I am going to give her both of your journals. Thank you for your guided tour of the canals, towns, bridges, locks, countryside, animal life, and what it's like to be a full time cruiser on a narrow boat. :)

Wow incredible to think that men had to "walk" the walls of the tunnel to get barges through the long tunnel. and 3 hours doing so. They were tough in the day !. I recently discovered your channel and throughly enjoy it’s beautiful content. I spent 21 years in the US Navy as a surface officer, I’ve had the privilege of piloting several ships in a variety of ports as well as the open ocean. I’m very impressed with your and Mr. M’s boating handling skills. The tight turns and narrow locks and tunnels look terrifying to this former ship driver. I once piloted a cruiser on the Mombasa River to the open ocean. The river is very wide there but I felt like I was driving through a soda straw!

Oh Vanessa, that was an exceptionally relaxing video especially when accompanied with a glass of Tamnavulin single malt. My wife was asking what is mindfulness. I showed her some of the sequences from this episode, living in the moment, stopping to stare and enjoying what you see. It takes a special attitude to notice all the life around in this amount of detail. And a delightful poem and sketch to end with. It gets no better.

Lovely bridge arches. I comb my Abbey-cat outside and leave the fur for the hummingbirds. They are so cute picking up the fur, which blows around as they try to get it. Abbey does not get many fleas, so combing is fine. I have had to use flea meds on other cats.

Beautiful camera work and excellent commentary., The Macclesfield Canal provides the most elevated and, some would say, most beautiful part of the Cheshire Ring. A lovely canal Vanessa and one where I had my honeymoon a long time ago when Bugsworth Basin was derelict! I love your grooming games with Zephyr, My Blaze seven tomorrow, and a ped Lab too, plays just like that when he is groomed. They are such lovely natured dogs and I'll bet like Blaze, yours is a wonderful devoted companion! Seventy-eight years and never without a four-legged companion mainly dogs, cats and a Romanian wolf, who was so special! After my time narrow boating in the nineties, I lived for ten years in beautiful Shropshire and know your current area very well. I left the UK for South Africa eighteen years ago, and have never regretted it. No canals, but I have the wonderful Kruger Game Park is on my doorstep and being able to see Ellies, Lions, Leopards, Buffalo, Cheetah, Rhinos and Hippos and countless other beautiful animals, birds and butterflies is breathtaking and I am so lucky. Love your programs Vanessa, you have such great talent and the way of sharing your enthusiasm. Stay safe and well you and Zeph and enjoy the Mac!

The Macc is my common cruising ground with Scholar Green being my home mooring town, the Narrowboat Rosie you passed has really interesting history, the same couple still own it that had it built in the 70’s, it spent 7-8 years over cruising the waterways of France, Belgium and the Netherlands in the 90’s. The owners live in the lengthsmans cottages and are really interesting to chat to for those interested in canal antics.

I love your channel, discovered it a week ago. When I was driving home today I got stuk in a traffic jam. I was looking at de small plants, waterbirds and looked at the sky.. normaly I would only do so going into nature. But I know now; nature is everywhere. That is such a wonderful use of being stuck in a traffic jam! Often birds of prey love to circle above busy roads so you can see some exciting predators there. Macclesfield is always a couple of degrees cooler than the Cheshire Plain. The wind rolls off the hills and through the town too. I think it may be better to dissolve owl pellets overnight in water. Thats a lucky find, i've not seen one in 30 years !

The vanishing insect: Sometimes this is an artifact of the mp4 (or other video standard but similar coder/codec...video plus audio) encoding engine. (with names like H.264 or H.265 for the video coding alone). It tries to find redundant parts of the video from frame to frame and not encode them again (no bit trail to draw object again). An example would be a video as you drift along in front of a brick home. The encoder says, "Aha! Same thing just moved to the right 10 pixels" (pixels=picture dots) so it leaves an instruction to move a square of pixels by 10 pixels right (or some other directions) and not redraw it. Every once in a while we get a key frame that redraws everything instead of moving parts and drawing a small part. And sometimes little things are close to the size of a square or few squares of pixels so the whole thing can get moved. The engine is kinda dumb (and the people that made it clever) so sometimes it will say, "There it is 15 pixels left" and it moves it on top of another object that to the engine looks the same thereby merging the two or a keyframe does the equivalent. It may just drop it as a redundant detail. mp3 does similar things in audio dropping sounds and instruments it thinks you can't hear. The engines are adjustable to drop more or less maybe by forces of which you were not aware like KZread or the camera manufacturer or you when you said "more space and less detail" to the camera. Sometimes the camera has a 'raw' mode to record 'lossless' BUT it takes a lot more file space. With raw, things don't vanish as a coding artifact but can if their speed is faster than a frame rate. (like 1/50th second there and 1/60th second here) I am retired cell phone and AV engineer.

@@themindfulnarrowboat Being engineer, I always try to find some way I could be wrong. I'n wikipedia, it says that springtail means just that. There is an appendage at the tail held under tension which can be released in as little as 18 thousandths of a second. Your camera frame rate could be 20msec or slower. Therefore, the springtail might have snapped it's tail and jumped an inch or two and got out of the field of view before the next frame. That is, it disappeared sure enough but to someplace nearby. Therefore, my explanation was technically correct about the codec. However, the simpler springtail jump explanation is more likely correct I think. Next time see if it reappears an inch or two away. I believe this is the first video I've seen you get something for yourself , nice Sofa Vanessa , you deserve it. Zephr didn't like that Brush did she and I guess we wouldn't like it used on us either. Well you did what you always do and made me wish I was back home again Vanessa . I have been to England in 2019. Did a two week (rushed) round road trip visiting London, York, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Liverpool, Bath, Portsmouth then back to London. Saw some narrow boats along the way. Would like to experience it sometime. I have a 37 foot sailboat for holidays on the water in NZ. I'm used to having more water around me. The infrastructure of nature is simply staggering in its sophistication, scope and complexity isn't it. And with great beauty and elegance, it just works. Thank you for taking the time and making the effort to show us some of these things. Everyone's part of the world is somewhat different I suppose, but your part is so peaceful and beautiful. Some of those bridges are not only beautiful, but look like no bridge I've ever seen. I always wonder what kind of people think up designs like that. They would have been interesting to talk to. Those last few minutes of your vids... from the kettle boiling, teapot filling, mug and biccies on a plate and glorious pouring of the cuppa...then the drawing and poem recital are my ASMR. Such peace and happiness in those few moments. PLEASE edit them all together into one long episode! I'd watch and listen on a loop. ☺️♥️ PS. Have you seen any swallows yet, or have I missed that?

The Vanishing Springtail?? ... That's some trick 🤔... Had to smile at the Scrap-Yard and Sewage-Works together ..... They were favourite places for mischief as a kid .... Of course - Health & Safety has made that an impossibility for today's youngsters ... Although not sure it was such a good choice in hindsight 😄 ... Not sure I could've handled that tunnel 🥴 - I find waiting in Hospital waiting rooms with no windows bad enough 🤠

I hadn't much tiime the past month so am catching up on 4 missed videos and am just absolutely amazed at how good they are, though I've been following you a couple of years already they just keep being amazing...on so many levels. One of them left me with a smile that just kept getting bigger, I think it was Zeph turning the coat brushing into a game but also the incredible bird shots and nature scenes as good as any documentary closeup I've even seen and bringing sights never seen before...stunning and real connection with nature and history and fun. Love the cuppa and treats at the end too! Though I'd probably prefer an academic paper on some animal than dissect its poo! 😬🙃

Loved the pretty bird house... but oh, I was so afraid, while you were dissecting the owl pellet, that a strand of blond hair would fall into the dissected dust. Hopefully it wasn’t as close to it as it looked. Lovely, hartfelt video, as always. My weekly thanks.

You’re supposed to put the Out pellet in water to help it dissolve a bit, so you don’t damage it. Then you can see the bones when you dry them on paper.
