The Lumbee are the largest Indian tribe east of the Mississippi, and while few are familiar with their story, Lumbee history is remarkable both in itself and as a way to more richly understand the United States in general. In this episode we speak with Dr. Malinda Maynor Lowery, whose life as a member of the Lumbee Tribe and a scholar who specializes in Native American history have made her a leading voice for the Lumbee community.
Dr. Malinda Maynor Lowery is Professor of History and Director for the Study of the American South at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She is the author of multiple works on Native American history, the most recent of which is The Lumbee Indians: An American Struggle (UNC Press, 2018). Her New York Times op-ed mentioned in this episode is “We Are the Original Southerners,” New York Times, May 22, 2018). You can follow her on twitter at @MalindaLowery.

thanks for your info...I am not overly concerned with the fact that there may be some family connection with the Lumbee peoples.....One of my ancestors by the name of Rachel Lowery lived in Rowan country in the late 1700's....she married a Warnock man, a yonega (Cherokee for "white person")... I know the history of the Lowery family going back to the white politician who married a Lowery....I know that WE come out into this world just as we are having nothing to do with who we really are or how we look..so each of us should just try to be the BEST person that we can be,,,,,,being 83 years of age and with a terminal cancer, I have begun to UNDERSTAND what the LORD meant when He said ..."Love one another as I have loved you".....WOW!!!......GOD is sooooo Good!!!!!

Many Scotch/Irish immigrants were very poor people who were brought over as indentured servants. My dentons were share choppers/Tennant farmers when they arrived in northeast Tennessee by 1777. They were a very poor people. They intermarried with cherokee tribes people from western nc mountains. My great grandfather Guy Denton meet a Julia jonea lady in 1890's from hendersonville,nc. Her dad was John Jones and Margaret (Riddle) Jones. Several of my grandma Bonnie (yates) denton's bloodline families of huskins, plotts and littlejohns go back to murphy,nc area in the mid 1700's. Also some of her direct bloodlines go back to Tappticos/Tapps from Culpepper,va area who were Nanticoke Leni Lenape tribes people originally from Delaware area. Who eventually migrated into northeast Tennessee by the late 1700's when that arra was still part of north carolina. They married into my chase and yates families.

@@timasuna1756 No the US is mixed race like large numbers of US families today which Democrats don't recognize because they want to pigeon hole everyone because they have always used the old tried and true method in elections of " divide and conquer". Old Tom Watson,Lester Maddox, and Jim Crow Joe Biden understood it. Their attacks on Vance denying his struggles, and Dr.Carson, and Justice Thomas's struggles are typical and frankly disgusting examples of the noxious old Klan defamation techniques. I grew up in the South and I can smell faux liberals hiding their true intentions. Lol!

This saddens me. Because something happened seriously to my identity and family. See I am a victim of identity theft. I handle it to my best knowledge reading and researching every major aspect of protecting myself. Then I had issues with my employment of ignored and blamed for things I didn't do at work because I literally wasn't there it was on my days off. So I felt invisible to what I observed and shared. Later I wanted to feel like someone and started researching my history. My family has barely started and has not finished our history or some have and doesn't want to share or say they are to busy. Then we move on to today. During the pandemic I felt that my son whose autistic needs to have a binder of information of his family including medical history. I am tired of answering questionnaire for his disability and I can't fully answer my family history. Well During the pandemic my husband had a mental health breakdown where I tried everything to get him help and again ignored by everyone. I was very proactive about seeking help to avoid any problems occurring where he would not be arrested or cps coming. Well it happened. Now I have a chance to find out who my children are by applying to lumbee tribe with the information I have collected from family over the years and reading records. The dept of health and social services turned in the application for court and I was excited to find out on my grandmother 100th birthday but not excited about the court case of Custody of my children. Well that day i received the information and it was incorrect. Wrong tribe everything incorrect nothing i provided. I asked to be corrected and it was granted and nothing again ignored. I asked last week and it was said there's no need your children are back with you. This is so messed up. Why do I have to go each day ignored like I don't have a right to my identity and the future protection for my children. I just want to know who I am for the sake of my identity. I appreciate Renee Lowery at the office for tribal application answering the phone and calling me giving me some information recently. Now that trial is happening this week I feel like my opportunity to know this final thing about myself is ending. Help me please. I'm trying to advocate for mental health and identity. And fixing my family current issue. But this is crushing me literally not knowing. If my grandparents were tribal? I know where they lived and dates and children. Email me if you can assist me sts0403.sc@gmail.com #iambeauteymafia 🌹

@tasha7369 proto Lumbee first began identifying as Cherokee Indians in 1915, when they changed their name to the "Cherokee Indians of Robeson County." Four years earlier, they had changed their name from the "Croatan Indians" Hard to know your history when it's a fiction, I suppose.
