I have always understood that the Russian retreat was calculated in order to weaken Napoleon's supply lines, and that the Russian's were not 'chased to Smolensk'. Not 'glorious' but effective, and because it was not 'glorious', there was political pressure to employ Kutuzov to stand and fight. I think the Russian tactics were brilliant; using brain over brawn, and what else to do when you are facing well over half a million soldiers? Thanks for posting this beautiful music!

I think number didnt matter much in there, Russians had almost same Army in any moment, and infinite resources in deep reserve. But Kutuzov, one of greatest military leaders in history of warfare, appreciated a life of his countrymen and liberty of his motherland more than palaces of Moscow, a home of elite who would sacrifice thousands of lives for their pieces of furniture. He gave them Borodino unwillingly, but didnt do counter attack, and saved majority of Army for winter pursuit securing a freedom to his people. Old man did all what he planed from the start, and his nation is grateful to him forever i'm sure. I call him a Chess-master :)

I find the whole story very interesting, hence why I created this video for my University course. The story that goes with the music is the religious one that God brought victory to Russia through the harsh winter (which is reflected in the churchbells at the end!). Napoleon made a big mistake I think and Hitler didn't learn from it, making the same one 100 years later!

Thank you for this, Joel. I have been a long term (but very poor) student of the Russian language and Russian literature, and regard War and Peace as the greatest novel ever written. The opening troparion to 1812 has always been one of my favourite pieces of music, but never - until now - seen the translation of it. I really love the way you have dealt with this moving piece of music graphically,(old flickering movie style background flag). Despite the translation criticisms - Well done!

I agree. I am also happy to have a semi-accurate translation adding to the depth of this beautiful piece. Together with your on-screen comments, this presentation is a genuine treasure. Thank you for sharing your college project.

As said Otto von Bismark: "War between Germany and Russia is the greatest nonsense. For this reason it surely happens." and "Never plan nothing against Russia because they will answer on each your cunning by the unpredictable nonsense.":)

Yes, at the time it was the largest and so I included that fact as the video is set as being made at that time (though the music wasn't produced for another 100 years and the technology not for 200!)

My translator was in fact French himself so maybe there was a loss of wording there? I only wish I had spoken to you a couple of years ago when I was creating the video! Thanks for your interest, I hope you enjoyed it!

Well done! But one thing. The text is slightly wrong from the sung choral. And also, where is the rest of the tex? They continue singing after the text stops. If you find the correct and whole version I would be most greatful. Happy easter from Finland.

The impression I get was Tsar Nicholas was a decent type all for the good of humanity as a whole. A curiously warped view when millions of Russians were serfs which meant you were property and could be bought and sold like cattle. Naoleon on the other hand only did anything for the good of napoleon even if it meant miliions killed. He hated the british with with a vengeance for always wrecking his plans. Simple answer go and beat them then. But he couldnt. His naval battles were a total disaster for the French. Justice was served at Waterloo.

I very glad to see that foreign people doing videos about Russian history (but from your video people can understand that Russian won in the war just because of God, fairs and winter:)) And about translation. I don't want to say anything bad about your translators, but 'Google translate' could make that work better. Sorry for my English
