This is based off of an Orthodox Christian hymn for the feast of the Exaltation of the Cross: "O Lord, save Your people, and bless Your inheritance. Grant victories to the Orthodox Christians over their adversaries. And by virtue of Your Cross, preserve Your habitation."
I find it even more unique with such inaccurate translation :) really enjoyed the video! Thank you for your work. 😊

Pre Soviet Russian had more letters in it. You should all look up our languages history. This hymn in particular is in Church Slavonic. So it has the old spelling.

I have always understood that the Russian retreat was calculated in order to weaken Napoleon's supply lines, and that the Russian's were not 'chased to Smolensk'. Not 'glorious' but effective, and because it was not 'glorious', there was political pressure to employ Kutuzov to stand and fight. I think the Russian tactics were brilliant; using brain over brawn, and what else to do when you are facing well over half a million soldiers? Thanks for posting this beautiful music!
I think number didnt matter much in there, Russians had almost same Army in any moment, and infinite resources in deep reserve. But Kutuzov, one of greatest military leaders in history of warfare, appreciated a life of his countrymen and liberty of his motherland more than palaces of Moscow, a home of elite who would sacrifice thousands of lives for their pieces of furniture. He gave them Borodino unwillingly, but didnt do counter attack, and saved majority of Army for winter pursuit securing a freedom to his people. Old man did all what he planed from the start, and his nation is grateful to him forever i'm sure. I call him a Chess-master :)

The impression I get was Tsar Nicholas was a decent type all for the good of humanity as a whole. A curiously warped view when millions of Russians were serfs which meant you were property and could be bought and sold like cattle. Naoleon on the other hand only did anything for the good of napoleon even if it meant miliions killed. He hated the british with with a vengeance for always wrecking his plans. Simple answer go and beat them then. But he couldnt. His naval battles were a total disaster for the French. Justice was served at Waterloo.

Thank you for this, Joel. I have been a long term (but very poor) student of the Russian language and Russian literature, and regard War and Peace as the greatest novel ever written. The opening troparion to 1812 has always been one of my favourite pieces of music, but never - until now - seen the translation of it. I really love the way you have dealt with this moving piece of music graphically,(old flickering movie style background flag). Despite the translation criticisms - Well done!

The Tchaikovsky "1812 Overture" starts by this anthem played pianissimo by the cellos. It comes back in the end just before the "God Save the Tsar" anthem with the bells and cannonballs.
