1812: A First Nations Perspective

The War of 1812 was a dramatic event in Canadian history. But what was at stake, and who won? The exhibition 1812 at the Canadian War Museum reveals that the answer to this question depends on perspective.
The exhibition takes a unique approach, exploring the war through the eyes of the four main participants: Canadians (including Canadian First Peoples), Americans, the British, and Native Americans.
We invited Chief Darcy Bear of the Whitecap Dakota First Nation, to say a few words on the First Nations perspective of the War of 1812.

I soon as I heard him mention promises my immediate thoughts were "Great, let's see how my forefather's leaders fucked up these people". Jesus, couldn't my country's history be a little more honorable?

Honestly this is terrible, just like the Americans the Canadians also destroyed much of the natives culture. At least the Americans own up to it and don’t cover it with scripted interviews/documentaries.

Exactly, I'm American but my brother in law is 100%canadian. He loves to bring up America's past but fails to realize Canada own past problems.. particularly the black slaves or the indigenous nation and the Japanese Canadian internment camps. He without sin can cast the first stone
